4343 upgrade over L 300?

Any opinons on the 4343 as an upgrade over the L 300's?

My guess is if you A/B'd the two you would side with the 4343's. Your wife/girlfriend would want you to keep the L300's for cosmetics. 4343's are kind of boring to look at. I've owned a pair of 4343's for a few years. One could argue it is the best Studio Monitor JBL has ever produced. Outstanding reproduction at any sound level. They'll take your breath away. JMHO

Am I to guess you're in the hunt for the set on Ebay?? If so, I hope you can pick them up. His crating/shipping fees look a little pricey. I had my set shipped about 2100 miles for about $550.00 (shipping/crating/insurance).

Apples and Oranges mean that you can't compare these speakers as they are completely different.

4435 use 2 Bass Speakers which allow higher sound levels but make them sound a bit boomy. Depends on your taste.
Additionally they use a 2425 mid/high frequency driver that is equalized to work up to 16 KHz.

4343 is a 4 Way speaker which means they use the best available speakers for every four frequency ranges. Thea have response up to 21 kHz.

Except I've not heard a pair of 4435's sound boomy, that's something I have yet to experience. I HAVE heard 4350's and 4355's sound boomy. Easily rectified though with proper placement and/or EQ and/or tuning the enclosures lower. ;)

Anyway, the 4430/4435 are quite a departure from their 15-inch based predecessors.

I view the move from the 4333/L300 to the 4343 as a natural progression, especially if someone is going to try building their own using the components from the 4333/L300. :)

I agree with Guido! The 4343s are a superior to my ears at all volume levels with both getting close to my ears at a sound level where a little trail of blood trickles out of each ear!

The 1977 Heritage spec sheet does not identify the 10" driver. It is said to have a 3" copper voice coil. Isn't this inconsistent with what we would normally use above 300Hz? I would assume aluminum would be desired due to the lightness and quick response at the higher frequencies.

What is this driver? The Spec sheet doesn't say.

Hi John,

The 4343 uses the alnico 2121 and the 4343B uses the SFG ferrite 2121H. Both have the 4" inverted paper dust cover.

The 4344 and 4345 use the newer 2122H which has a harder 3" dust cap. It is less susceptible to break-up.

All of them use a 3-inch edgewound copper ribbon voice coil.

Sure, it just wasn't in the cards way back then. The newer 2123H uses an aluminum voice coil.
