Does the 1500AL have lower distorsion than the 2242H ?

I guess the 2242 is the driver with the lowest distorsion in
the JBL range of drivers in the range 30 - 1000hz

..how does the 1500AL compare?

I guess I would be surprised if the 1500AL wasn't slightly lower but I'll examine both and let you know.

Would be interesting to push/pull two drivers and see
how the 2nd, 3rd .. .. distorsion would end up.

But at higher levels, would not the 2242 outperform the 1500AL?

That's "push-push" shown, actually, wired parallel

The better arrangement is belly to belly, "push-pull," wired inverse parallel....

Lowest Distortion?

Distortion is an interesting concept. In the most broad terms distortion could be considered any change from the original. In this case I assume you are asking about second and third harmonic distortion which are both rather easily measured, if you have the right equipment, and are given a rather convenient set of curves or sets of numbers that can be easily compared between two speakers.

The two speakers you are comparing are not exactly direct equivalents. The one is primarily a subwoofer and the other is a high resolving low distortion woofer with limited ultra low frequency capabilities. It is kind of like comparing gas mileage for a sports car and a pick up truck. It certainly can be done, but I am not sure how relevant it is.

That said I have recently compared the 2235H and the 1500AL in the same enclosure in the same application. I used both of them below a mid compression driver and horn crossed over at 600Hz and allowed them to run out naturally at the low end. In this comparison I was able to hear that the 2235H does have an edge for low frequency extension, but the 1500AL was able to resolve much more detail. This will not be evident in a frequency response graph or distortion curve. In fact I doubt there is a measurement that will show how one driver compares to another in resolving power. I was blown away in fact by the detail and lack of "harmonic muddiness" (I just made up that term but I think you get my meaning) that the 1500AL exhibited. In this system I was reasonably happy with the 2235H, but once I heard the 1500AL I was no longer satisfied with the 2235H.

For the record I was using a pair of Sub1500s below both woofers so their LFE wasn't a real concern.

but once I heard the 1500AL I was no longer satisfied with the 2235H.

In my case it was the ME150h in comparison to the 2235h . The tonality of its' aquaplassed 15" cone is very nice.

On the other hand ; I've never been given the same immediate impression ( of "I can't go back now" ) when comparing the deep-gapped 2012h to a 2123h. Maybe I'd notice an epiphany in a large format 4way , such as some 4344 variant .

- Sorry, Niklas, this does seem to have wandered off your specific topic .

( though the 2242 & the ME150h do share a very similar if not identical motor structure )

BTW, JBL gets a drop of ~ 5 Hz in the Fs of the 2242H after a power test. I've only gotten a couple, if any, after breaking in mine. Guess I'm not using enough power. :p

JBL power tests the 2242H at 72 V RMS from 50 to 500 Hz for 2 hours. The 1500AL is power tested at 45 V RMS from 50 to 500 Hz for 2 hours.

Niklas,

I suppose your application will help you determine what is best for you. If you are doing a Disco, go with 4" Titanium diaphragm compression drivers, a good mid bass and the 2242s, for high end home you should consider the 1500AL and more sophisticated components like the 435Al or 435Be. For the bottom you already have a wall of Sub1500s so I guess that is covered.

Hi Widget

Yes i already have low distorsion drivers, the SUB1500 and
my K2 s9500 are great.

I am just curious about this matter.

I like the energy theese big drivers have in the midbas, it´s
really impressive. I listen allot to drums, big loud drums, and
my 4x14" in my K2 really make theese come alive.

I wonder how it would sound if it where 4x2242 18" instead :p

a K2 consisting of 4 2242, waooow

This weekend i listened to the Usher D2, and i can say, it does
not come close to the K2 ;)

JBL still rules this world

The most impressive system i have ever listened to, is the IMAX
system at www.cosmonova.se that´s Swedens IMAX -cinema.
Each loudspeaker-pack consist of two 18", two 10" and 2 horns.
The sub was 8 18", originally 2245H but now they was some other brand couse the foam was broken after 10 years of HARD
work at the cinema.

Maybe, i can write more about this some day. I´m writing for one
of the biggest newspapers in sweden about home cinema, and
i wrote at least 6 pages about this cinema.

The sound is so clear, and the lack of distorsion is so ompressive,
also the big loudspeakers is faaaaaar away behind the cupole
så they act as perfekt sources, in Swedish we call it "punkt källa".

Their subwoofer was 2245 x 8, but now they using some driver from RCF...

phew!:)

it would be intressting to read about their system! the only thing they mention on the site is:
maximum spl: 110db
power:15200W
six chanels.

i would like to watch a ac/dc concert in there!:rockon1:

Niklas Nord

Well, they can do more than 110db, thats something to do
with the Swedish regulations, how loud you can be :D

Yes, I'm slumming it right now with 2234s and Sub1500s. But, while I'm waiting for Widget to finish playing with the expensive stuff I might need to recone some more 2234s and build some cabinets for my 2020H's. I've been wanting to try a modernized and basterdized version of the 4355 with twin 15's, a 12, a 2" throat compression driver and a ribbon supertweeter.

Niklas Nord

Tim G,

what do you mean with basterdized?
do you mean the loudspeaker is a bastard operator from hell?
alias BOF ?

Giskard, and you others.. Is there anybody who has been measuring
the JBL 2242 vs the JBL 1500AL yet?

Frequency and distorsion :p Anybody?

On axis and offaxis measurements..
