View Full Version : Different LE85 horns in my L300's?

I just got my hands on some L300's and am trying to learn as much as possible. My serial numbers are pretty far apart (17419 and 18942) and I have noticed that in addition to the front cabinet decals being different, when I look into the mid horns the earlier serial number speaker's horn has a wire mesh screen covering the diaphragm while the later serial number speaker has some sort of plastic yellow piece inside the horn? Did JBL modify the construction of these horns as time went by, or is this a mod done by the previous owner? I haven't been able to listen to them yet so I am unsure of how this may affect the sound?

Have you ventured to the interior? Are both drivers identical?

I haven't pulled them out yet or removed the back panel to check out the labeling. I've pulled the woofers and looking inside the cabinet the finish on the horns and driver size is identical. I'll have to investigate further.

The plastic thing looks like something from Fisher-Price a kid jammed in there. I had a couple balls and some Duplos inside my subs when my son was young.

bought a pair of basement L200's that had dozens of ping pong balls that managed to fly into the ports. Owner said they had a funny sound when turned up loud..:)

Yeah - you need to CAREFULLY remove the kid toy.

I've bought speakers with car key rings inside , petrified orange peel and even the original installers wire strippers.

(3 diff sets)

ports + little kids = stuffed speakers

As long as you don't find a long lost cat in there, you're good! :crying:

Hmm don't think it's a toy as it is just too perfectly wedged in there, its also so far in that I would only be able to reach it with pliers. The horn is also tapered and I cant imagine even the tiniest little toddler hand being able to fit in there. The horns in both speakers are both H92. I'm afraid to go yanking away at it as it really does look like its part of the horn/driver!

Yes its a toy,,, nothing like that exhists in a jbl hf driver,,, you will need a long forceps to pull it out

Much easier to remove the driver and push it out from the back.
