I have had these JBL L86 speakers about three weeks. They sound very
nice. Last night I heard a buzz. Inspected surrounds and guess what.
My questions are 1)These have rubber surounds, seems every one sells
foam for this speaker. Will foam work or should I try to find rubber ?
2) Do I have to shim the voicecoil when doing the surround ? I have done
a few speakers but have never shimmed. Only used a 1.5 volt battery.
I have read JBL's have a tight voicecoil clearance on some models.
These speakers are a cut above my others and I do not want to mess
them up. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

Hi. Do a search here for Rick Cobb. He sells foams for these and will send instructions as well. I have never had to shim these while re foaming.

I've re-foamed several pair of the 117H-1 using the kits from OrangeCounty (http://www.speakerrepair.com/). I find them to be one of the easiest to do. The surround is narrow and fits perfectly, practically centering the VC by itself. If I had to choose a driver for "re-foaming training", this would be the one. Further, OC will send a one-piece gasket that also fits perfectly and makes the job that much easier.
