Hello, All

If everything goes according to plan, I am about to get a mate for my lonely blonde/oak 606. Unfortunately, the new cabinet is a cherry or light mahogany finish. Do any of you guys know if Altec used the same 'base' veneer for their cabinets back when these were current? Or, should I expect different woods which would make matching difficult or impossible without re-veneering one box or the other? I guess that I could always fill, prep and paint -- any suggestions or opinions? I do have a buddy who owns a body shop and owes me a favor or two and an Altec Silver/Grey or piano-black finish might look nice.

FWIW, I plan to keep these for now but would like to refinish them to a high standard just in case I ever want to resell them. I am planning to use them with a pair of factory re-coned 604Es I have had in storage for many years. Any suggestions for crossovers as I bought the 604s without them?

Thanks for any and all comments and suggestions.

Best wishes,
David

Hi David;

I have no information to give on the veneer side of your inquiry, sorry.

I have a pair of 604 8-G's and managed to buy a pair of the correct crossovers so now I have a reference to how they sound as supplied. I do want to build a pair of the "Mastering Labs" crossovers for them, it's a ways back on my list however. Have you decided on a course of action for yours yet?

I was thinking of going with the Markwart 604B with MF EQ, but only if I can find the right inductors. Otherwise, I will use an active crossover.

And more info:

These are time aligned/phase corrected and look easier to source/build than the ML crossovers.
