Do you want dimensions, and internal measurements of cabinets like Altec 816,s, 815,s, and 817A,s?

JBL L100/L100A Century (without grille installed):

23.5"H x 14.25"W x 11.5"D externally. Internal dimensions are 22"H x 12.75"W x 9.5"D. Rear panel recessed 1/4". Just measured BOTH an original L100 (un-ducted vent on front panel, with LE20) and an L100A (ducted vent with right-angle, with the LE25), and they were identical.

Ports/Vents:

L100 (early model): 2" diameter vent, no duct (1" length, thickness of front baffle board)

L100A (late model): 3" diameter vent, ~8" long (through center of right angle bend).

JBL L80T:

32.5"H (not including pedestal) x 14W x 11.875" deep external.

31" x 12.5" x 10.375" ID's

Pedestal 1.5" tall, 12.5W x 10.5"D (centered on bottom).

Port: 3" diameter, 4.25" long.

Would these posts be better placed in the underutilized "Technical Info" forum instead of here in "Technical Help"? And possibly be posted in threads titled by model numbers, instead of searching through one long "cabinet size" thread here? Maybe to include other pertinent model info as well, such as all the various drawings that have been posted by some of the builders here? Heck, even component and crossover info would be great, unless that duplicates library info too much. But at least it would all be in one place, (for each model/thread).

Just an idea...

Eventually yes. This is an information gathering thread only and will eventually get whacked. Notice this thread is a "sticky".

Ok, it looks like that Techbot just restructured some network info after reading your suggestion.

Hi Giskard,

when back from my USA trip in november, I will send you the drawings of the Altec Valencia cab.
I think it's time to catalogue all drawings in a special lib.

Hope I'm posting this in the right part of the forums - if not someone can yell at me, and I'm sure they will...
Does anyone know offhand what the L100 boxes are made from - is it chipboard with veneer or is it some kind of plywood? And the damping material inside?

bob newton

Not plywood. Partical board!

I owned a pair of late model (L100A) L100's in the early 80's, and the enclosure was particle board with walnut veneer. I didn't have too much occassion to remove the drivers (once or twice) as I recall the damping material was a pretty generous amount of the standard fiberglass insulation that you commonly see in speakers. Some other forum members may be able to elaborate further on this...

Does anyone have informations about front elements positionning on a L100:

123A,
LE5-2,
LE25,
vent,
Xover panel,
Xover knobs holes,
grill pegs?
And what is the height I need to cut on the front panel to place the 123A and what are the two diameters.
I hope you understand what I mean: it’s difficult to explain for me in english.:o:

This is a picture to clarify (in the red square are the dimensions I am looking for) — I know it’s not a L100 drawing but it’s the only thing as close as a L100 I found:

http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/7961/l1006mh.gif

http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/2222/porttube5uy.gif

And do you know the dimensions of this part (port-tube length and diameter)? :o:

I plan to build four L100 enclosures clones. It’s the last info I need before to start assembling parts. ;)

I will take pictures of building operations and finished clone and post it here to share my little experience :D

L100's used particle board (ouch!) with walnut veneer. was MDF invented then? internal dampening on the original vertical array L100 was strangely done on only 3 of the 6 sides of the box--the opposing side in every case is left bare. the original L100's had a bit of a boomy bass, so i covered all sides except the baffel board and was surprised that it may almost no difference. the response may have been slightly tighter but was almost the same. a friend told me that insulation does not so much affect the fundamental but, rather higher harmonics in the mid bass. don't know if this is true but my experiment would leave me to believe that he is correct.

Anyone have the box size for these beauties? The sales brochure lists them as 11 7/8h x 24w x 12d. This must include the legs. Also how wide is the lip on the front, top and bottom.

I have two ports, each 7 cm in diameter, at each bottom corner of the woofer that extend 8 cm into the cabinet before turning upwards at 90 degrees so I don't know their exact final length. When I stick a ruler in the hole the max penetration is 15 cm.
Single port, 2.75" ID x 2.5" L....

Hi, all,
I just posted this info on the Altec forum, and thought it might be of use here as well. There are pictures of both models in the Altec '93 Pro catalog in the library. The M500 components are;
3154
MR994-8A
909-8A
M500 XO w/switchable EQ
I'm assuming the 9815-8A uses the same components with a re-labeled XO, but I don't KNOW that to be true. The cabs are the same, however;

Altec M500/9815-8A cabinet dimensions and baffle layout;

Cabinet exterior; 26.5"Wx33"Hx17.5"D (M500-black laminate, 9815-8A-unfinished birch)
Top, sides, and bottom of 11/16" ply, front and rear panels of 3/4" ply
Top, sides, and bottom are routed (depth unknown) to accept the front and rear panel edges
Two 1.5" square braces tie front to back panels, uniformly horiz. spaced between woofer and horn cutouts.
Four 1.5" joint braces glued in side corners front-to-back
Interior lined with 1.5" fiberglass, except bottom
Rear panel recessed 3/8"
Baffle recessed 1" (optional grill fills recess, fastened with 6-10/24 T-nuts to baffle

(Note-baffle layout measurements were taken from the apparrent baffle edges, and don't include the unknown amount glued in the routed perimeter. Woofer and horn are centered horizontally).

Standard, large-frame, front-mounted woofer cutout of 14-1/8", center of which is 9-3/16" up from bottom of baffle
Only 6 T-bolts (1/4") for woofer, omit the two at 6 and 12 o'clock positions
Horn cutout is 21"Wx11"H. From baffle bottom to bottom of cutout is 18-9/16"
Six T-nuts (1/4") placed to fit horn drillings
Four 3" ID x 4-3/4" (effective length) round ducted ports surround the woofer
All are 3" from baffle sides to center of port
Lower pair is 3" up to center, upper pair is 15" up to center from bottom of baffle

Keep it comin', guys, this is a worthy project, especially with boxes disappearing, and drivers in abundance.

Sorry, Bo,

Unfortunately, I currently have no pictures to post, and have corrected the bad links to the plain text they were intended to be. The Altec forum is subject to having popular keywords auto-linked to some commercial marketing search engine, an undesired feature we've all learned to ignore. Evidently, when I copied the text from my post there, the commercial links came with it, and being used to seeing them, I ignored them in my preview.

My apologies, and my compliments to the backbone of the Lansing Heritage site. It's a VERY functional and well-managed resource that I really appreciate.:applaud:

JBL claimed "high density" particle board was supposed to have less resonance than plywood, although
high end diy of the day liked "marine plywood" which had no voids. As to the glass, it wasn' there to load the woofer or tune the box, although you could do that. Whenever there were two parallel walls one was covered to eliminate standing waves. So, their yours, if they sound better to you with more glass that is fine, but someone didn't screw up they covered three walls instead of six on purpose. I think they were trying to make that box sound just as large as they could an more glass wasn't the way to do it.

Use "Search" to find the answer. JBL lied.

Well, fact is, nobody knew what impedance to call "nominal" back then, so anything went, and JBL played fast and loose with the specs according to market demands....

nice, so they lied about the ohms hehehe i have been looking at box designs in the library and its confusing. on one of the spec sheets, it says not to port the d130, but there is a cabinet design sheet that has a pretty big port drawn on it. so do i port or do i not port? thanks

This thread is for the collection of stock Altec/JBL physical enclosure information. Any information is desired and will be archived. Here is an example of some information that might be of interest:

Hi Giscard,

I have tried to assemble in one Word document, information about the 4343 cabinets and how they maybe dissassembled. The information has been gathered from various submissions to the forums.
Since capturing it there has been some discussion about whether some specific information was correct (concerning an access panel on the rear of the 4343 .. mine appears to have one!).
Anyway, I wanted to knoe if this is the sort of thing that is intended for this thread and if you think the contents are arranged usefully.
Ideally the document would be updated as ideas crystallise, but that may be too much to expect.

Tim,

Giskard is away at the moment.

Your post is in the right thread I think.

May l suggest more pics in the PDF, ie removing/ assembling / rotating the panel and the drivers, dimensions. The wiring code of the crossover loom.

Subwoofer also has some images of the 4343 that may interest you.

Hi Ian,

yes, the extra information that you ask for will be added as I uncover it. The document that I have made so far just documents as far as I think I need to get to my next stage. When I actually try it I may have more to say about techniques and certainly more photographs.

I was not sure about adding details on the crossover and drive units because those issues seem to be well served in other threads. However, if you think it appropriate I could do it... and then perhaps we can avoid more discussion on wiring colour codes.

I think the value is in having the information in a transportable doc like a pdf than can evolve over time with the support of other members(ie v1,2,3,4).

Pics say a thousand works. The problem at times is finding and cross referencing the information across different threads. If we can have some visual basics it would be quite useful. The wiring is always a PITA and even bigger headache to write about. By alll means have a go at it but only when you are ready.

my intention was to structure a document with all of the information and pics together. PDF is fine but hard for members to edit. I have posted a few more pictures today on the rebuild... and discovered unexpected positioning of the crossover and so on.
