JBL's birthplace now has an address - 804 Rose Ranch Road, San Marcos CA. The San Marcos ranch and buildings that were the genesis of JBL have been found and confirmed by the family. Seven aerial photographs below illustrate the location over time from 1947 to 2005.

There were three original buildings - the family home, a garage that became the workshop, and a small residence that was used as a rental. The home and garage were built in 1945 and the rental dates from 1931. Purchase was through a Grant Deed from LeRoy W. Rose to James B. and Glenna P. Lansing dated June 5, 1946, for a property identified as: Lot 4, and a portion of Lot 2 and Lot 3 of Block 30 of Rancho los Vallecitos de San Marcos according to Map 806 dated December 21, 1895. This property has subsequently been divided into 14 lots and none remain with the Lansing family.

Only the original home still exists. The workshop disappeared between 1964 and 1980 according to the dated photography. The rental residence lasted until at least 2006 but has disappeared from current 2010 Goolge imagery.

On all of the attached photos, the original home is circled in blue and the rental residence is circled in red. The workshop is circled in green on the photos where it still existed. The following link shows the home in its current state.

If there is any desire to view the former Lansing ranch, please respect the fact that it is private property in multiple hands. These numerous current owners likely have no idea of the past history and JBL connection. There should be no need to disturb them as they will have no knowledge to add to the JBL legacy.

On the link you provided you can see the ruins of the house (red circle)

I noticed that. Supposedly it was used as a chicken coop adjacent to a new home by the subsequent owners.

The source of the above photos is an amazing site called Historical Aerials. Below is a link to the site with the 1947 aerial selected.

There is a slider at the bottom right of the page that lets you zoom in and out. Using the “Compare” feature, you can track the changes over time. It can be accessed by clicking the second box from the left on the second row of buttons at the top of the page. Select “Slide” from this drop down menu and a slider bar will appear at the top along with a second set of date boxes along the right side of the page. Pick a starting date from the left date boxes and a comparison date from the right boxes. Then move the slider bar and you can see the photo changes from one date to the next.

I’ve been playing around with this site to view other historic Altec/JBL locations. Below are a few more links if you are looking to waste some time. You will probably want to copy and paste the addresses into a map site such as Google Maps to pinpoint the exact location first since the Historical Aerials site does not place a marker over the specific location.

If I lived there, I'd be pretty creeped out by now. :rotfl: Let's hope the residents don't know anything about Lansing Heritage. :nutz:

They have nothing to fear unless I spot Bose Acoustamass through the windows.

Thank you for chasing down the details.

There are so many great internet resources out there.

A while back, didn't a poster say he was going to try to take a street level picture of what his own research turned up?
