I have some 300Hz Altec horns I'd like to sell (two 803A's and one 203B). They're too large to be practical in my current listening room. I don't know a graceful way to pack and ship them.

The 803A's are 26"x30"x17" and the 203B is 31"x31.5"x17".

Anyone have experience/tips?

Thanks!

I shipped a pair of JBL 2360s and stretch wrapping them to a pallet and going motor freight was how we worked it out. Just ungainly, not heavy.

Some cardboard to keep them from rubbing together I think was all, maybe some cardboard pads at the corners.

Freight can be shipped fairly reasonable thru Greyhound Bus Services.

They just stuff it under the bus.The reciever has to pick it up at the bus terminal though.

Had a fender shipped for an antique car that I was working on under the bus.

double up black bin liners and fill with expanding foam .... one bag on each corner of the box ... wrap the horn in cling film , just in case of a leak. This holds everything snug inside the box .

just an idea , Rich

Not sure about the 203B but the 803 you can mount to a wooden frame (Cells pointing up) then drop into a cardboard box. Then insert a cardboard sleeve that will pin the wooden frame to the bottom.Use some open cell foam where needed. This is how Altec shipped some of their horns I have a Brand new 805 still in the original box and that is how they did it.

If you use the wooden frame, cardboard box, cardboard sleeve method, just pack the throats in a seperate box."DO NOT" put anything else in the box with the horn,as it will damage the horn in transit. All the hardware that came with mine (bolts, nuts, washers) came in a padded yellow envelope that was stapled to the wood frame. But I would just send the hardware with the throats. All with delivery confirmation & Insured ! ;)
