Will JBL 044-1 diaphragm work for 044 tweeter?

Greetings:

I have a 044 tweeter than resonated (squawked) on certain source material. I pried the diaphragm off, and found that the voice coil had become fused with the magnet, in what looks like an overheating incident, abuse visited upon it by the former owner. For the time being, I've attached some 034 tweeters behind the 044 aluminum plates (they screwed in directly after removing the plastic faces). I've found some 044-1 diaphragms, which appear to be identical to the 044 diaphragms, except for a gold instead of aluminum colored dome. Would someone in the know kindly tell me if these will work for the 044 tweeters?

I think we all know that the bronze-colored phragm sounds more airy and spacious than the luminum one does. :blink:

I have an 044 phragm one playing nicely in one L250's 044-1. I try to avoid noticing the different color sound. :)

The 034s aren't nearly as forward as the 044s, are they?

034 uses pretty much the same diaphragm, but different VC and magnet. I doubt they are interchangeable but I've never tried. In terms of sound, there's very little difference, if any, unless they are pushed to screaming levels. The main difference being power handling.

That's what I read, but I was thinking the other day that if I was to match the output of the 034s, I would need to dial the high freq l-pad down to -6 with the 044s, they're that much quieter.

The 034 and 044 are somewhat functionally equivalent. If I remember correctly the 034 has a lower flux density so it doesn't have quite the top end response or efficiency that the 044 has, maybe a dB or two of difference. And I think the 034 was good to about 15k while the 044 was good to about 18k. This is based on the engineering design specification, in real life there could be greater or lesser variance.

It's very difficult to do a fair comparison of the 034 and 044 because they are only heard in pretty different applications, different crossovers and XO points, etc. Mostly the 034 was used with XO points that were too low, (L56, L15). The L46 and L86 were exceptions and the application was pretty similar to the 044. Comparing my L86 to L96, it's very difficult to hear anything different that I would attribute to the tweeter, they have the same XO point. The main difference is in how they respond to generous applications of power.

Thanks for the education, rdgrimes. I just took ownership of a NAD 2600, and the 034s really seem to have come alive with a generous application of power. I don't think I'm in any danger of blowing them though...in my environs, I can't really "crank it."
