View Full Version : Speaker center to center distance - Theory and Practice question.

From what I understand (which is almost nothing), center to center distance of speakers should be less than a 1/4 wave length at the crossover point. It seems that in many circumstances this is impossible because of the size of PA speakers and the frequencies they play. For example crossing a 15" woofer like the JBL E145 with anything above 400Hz would seem to violate this principle, but JBL does this with great success with the Everest!

So is this a principle in theory only? How does it play out in real life?

Just keep the spacing as close as you can. When you are dealing with 15" woofers 10 or 12" mids with horns up top things get big quickly. I would obviously be more conerned with a 10-12" midrange to horn spacing than the woofer to midrange. If you look at Drews Clues he recomended the closest spacing possible between the midrange and a horn in the larger systems.
