Hi, im a newbie here and have searched numerous theads regarding D130 cones and voice coils not being compatible with 130a frames/motors. I've read a post where Harvey Gerst states that when he left JBL the 130a and D130 frames where one and the same with only the voice coil wire being different (copper vs aluminum) and that at some later point the gap depth and top plate thickness were changed. I've also read Edgewound stating emphatically that no, a D130 cone assembly will not work with a 130a frame/motor. I recently bought what I thought was a D130 guitar speaker only to find out thru researching here that its a woofer :crying:. My bad for not doing my homework :( I need final clarification on this issue to decide if i can recone the speaker to D130 spec or sell the speaker. The serial number is 19244. Any help appreciated.

I just checked a catalog from 1962...

It says the 130A/130B has a "longer magnetic gap" than the D130, and the magnet assembly weighs in at a half pound more.

The gap depth for the D130 is .028" while the 130A (2220) is .035", slightly under-hung voice coil.

The recone kits are not interchangeable in the sense that JBL means that they are not interchangeable. Lots of knuckleheads out there will always say that it "fits"...but it won't work as intended because the voice coil will be in the wrong position in the gap.

Except--making a 130a out of a D130 to reproduce recorded music--that would be a problem because fidelity would be compromised, but going the other way, i.e. coning a 130a frame with a D130 kit to play your guitar through, if you like the way it sounds, I don't see where there's a problem. But don't wreck a good 130a to do it.

Anyway, I have a 2135 for sale. The model number designates the same speaker (D130) in the late seventies Pro Division of JBL. If you are interested, pm me. I'm working on a price.

I've used a 2135 for guitar & bass for decades, I love the thing.

If I could play guitar well enough to be that loud I'd probably keep it, but I think the neighbors would get tired of "Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore" and "Go Tell Aunt Rhody."
