Hello

I can get a pair of 2235H but I've got a little doubt about them.
In the center there is no trace of the coil wires, I can see those 2 little black trace of glue in every JBL wooffers, but those one as no trace at all.
The outher gasket is brown, and I never saw a 2235 with brown gasket.

I join you a picture where you can see that there is no trace of the coil glue, and you can see that the gasket are brown.

Do you think that those speakers have been repair ?

Thanx

You have a picture from the back?? Odd there are no coil wires unless the dome is oversized. All the recones I have 5 all have black foam gasket material.

I've got got a little picture.

The domes don't seem to be oversized.

I have some 2235h wit JBL cones. They do have a grey gasket, and the two coil wires. These are obviously recones. Check for white scripts on the back of the cones. There should be the codes for the 2235h kit.

Also the texture of the back of the cones is not correct. It should be smooth while you can observe a concentric circular texture.

By the way, the white "2235" script is not correct. Certainly not JBL style.

Strange indeed, if the dome is not oversized this suggests that the coil is less than 4" in diameter
To hide these lead wires the dome would need to be a lot wider.

Do you have a picture of the back of the speaker? not only the connectors?

Either this or the lead wires go directly to the voice coil from under the cone.... either way it's not right.

If you don't manage to find the actual C8R2235 kit, and are near Paris, you can contact HP Service at St Maur des fosses: they build recone kits from parts that are really close to the original (maybe better than JBL current production...:().
Alternatively I have a ME150H pair for sale :D

Doesn't matter if can go through customs without tax.
comparing with 2235H,which one is more softer and can go deeper?

The ME150H is more refined and also more efficient (2dB more than a 2235H in the midband) It is more in line with a 2234H response-wise. So it has as much bottom as a 2235H but 2db more in the midband.

The three pictures below describe for sure a late basket as identified by the two speaker posts being aligned with one of the eight mounting holes. The earlier baskets don't have those squarish plastic push-ins, but spring loaded metal cylinders. The metal posts are aligned between two of the eight mounting holes. Same differences between an early and a late 2225 basket.

I am not 100% positive, but an early 2235 should have a grey basket. And late ones have a black basket. Or perhaps the black basket was specific to the 2225, and the pictures below might depict a 2225 basket reconed as a 2235. To be confirmed.

But about aftermarket recone............are they so bad for 2235 speakers ?
Whoever did those in your pic, they came up with an aesthetically agreeable result. Now for the specs, do they match an original 2235 kit – that's a whole different story. The supplier will say yes, while 9 of 10 members here will tell you by experience that the factory kits are unrivaled, and the only way to get a 2235H properly reconed. On the other hand factory kits made in the US will get less and less available, and on today's factory kits made by the Mexico plant, the jury is still out.

Bottom line is, you should try them before you buy, and see how they sound to you. Having heard a genuine 2235H before would help.

So far my experience (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?29115-1400PRO-cone-kits-made-in-Mexico/page3&highlight=mexico) with JBL cones made in Mexico is that they are equal in quality and performance as the cones made in Northrige.
In short, they are still JBLs. Granted I tested only one model of woofer.

Very good to know. We all "old timers" will sooner or later need re-cone sets.

Yep. Sonically there should be no difference between the black framed 136A and the grey 2231A – same basket, same motor. The 136H / 2231H have ferrite magnets and can handle a bit more power, probably.

Even the cone / spider / voice coil assemblies were interchanged between both models, by JBL's service partners. Have a look here (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?25447-Are-these-2231A-cones-factory&p=256705&viewfull=1#post256705).

For all of them, if a recone is in order the 2235H is the kit of your choice.

these will likely be nowhere near as good as what you would get from HP service (also aftermaket, but properly done).

Also it looks like there is no massring in your kit (but that is not a real problem if you have eq at hand (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?27958-My-Mass-Rings-Arrived%21&p=281468&viewfull=1#post281468))

Ask them for T/S measurement

What he said.

BTW, out of curiosity I've asked the seller in last december, regarding the missing mass ring

Q: Dear joel...
>> sorry no mass ring is included. <<

Question for you experts: shouldn't it perform like a 2234 then? Kind regards

A: Hello ...
we have been using coatings to get the mass total of the cone correct 155
grams. this is what we do

if you would like the 2234 we can make that also
otherwise we could make a mass ring for you for an additional 15.00

thank you and happy holidays

If you look very well you will see that thoses kits are the same as "HP service", the cone is the same with the same print. And this guy on ebay sells 136A recone kits, not only 2235 as the others.
I think that it's impossible to know the real quality of any aftermarket kit before get them in our hands.

HP service is using a mass ring I believe.

But aquaplass coating is a great solution because that additional weight is not wasted, like it is with a mass ring, beacause it can serve to dampen breakup modes of the cone. This is also what is done on the ME150H. The sound will certainly be different than a 2235H though, but it could be for the better.

Please buy them and measure the actual T/S you get! :bouncy:

thiel/small parameters (Fs, Qes, etc...) that can be easily measured using tools like Woofer tester 2.
If you install these kits please try to measure them (or find someone that could, maybe when installing them), that would be a great resource for this forum!
