im looking to buy another set of jbls (already have 2 sets l112s and 1 set of l150a) and have around 700 to 800 to spend. i love the sound of my previous jbl (running them on a yammie mx800u (but also have a yammie mx1000u getting recapped). i have a line on a set of l65s (unfortunately not jubals) and was wondering if these would be the best choice or is there another set i could get in this price range. my music of choice is classic rock. these l65s are in very good shape and in the past ive looked at a set of l166 (havent heard either). so id like some recommendations. thanx brad

You need a pair of L96 to complete your family. And they have the advantage of an interchangeable crossover and drivers with your others. If there's money left over you might want a nice sub to work with them.

L-65's are way overpriced in the market because of the eye candy cabs with glass tops and that magical "glass" "prism" "unobtanium" 077 deflector. Yes I still have a pair, and the old 122 woofer just doesn't get with the classic rock program.

Cut your budget 1/2 and find some L-7's. Start a new thread looking for a good 250 -300 WPC amp and you will be rock'in in a new world.

There's wisdom in those words.

I have a pair of L65A's and I think they are a very good speaker for the $700-800 range...

For $500 you can get a pair of L112, L96, or L100, I have heard all of these and think they are fabulous....

Any of these Studio Monitors are also good and in that price range.... 4311, 4312, 4313, 4410, 4412....

I have heard these are really nice but never had a chance to hear them... L100t, L5, L7... they can be had for about the same money.

Happy Hunting...

Brad, I feel compelled to tell this story. Last June I had my L150's and L7's both hooked up to a Sony 110 WPC amp, an old APC Holman pre amp, and a [real good] Sony CD player. An older friend [Nam vet, sniper] who rarely stops by 'cause when he does he can't leave and has one too many to be comfortable driving his big black Benz the 2 miles home. Anyway, before we got to the main room, I put a Doors CD [one of his favs] on the previous described system. Through the 150's. After a couple minutes switching to speaker "B" on the sony [the L7's] he jerked around to look at me like some snakes jumped out of the speakers and bit him! Never will forget that one, point is they are that good. I have wired 'em up in my bi amp system just for fun [550 per side total] they are just the best sounding old JBL's for the price. Why so cheap? NO WAF. And you can't put them next to your ent system because of the side firing woofs. But they just work for me.

For your price range do not rule out a pair of 240ti's, you will.still have cash in the bank and no need for the sub. If you have patience you may even get a pair of L250's, they have the tweeter and mid you already have. I think, someone comment on that please.

but I dont know of many experienced JBL'ers who have L100's AND are that enthusiastic OR think of $500 as a price they would pay for some...

I guess that we should verify that he's talking USD ??

sounds like the subject for a forum poll ??

"would you buy L100's for $500 " ????

suspect many answers would be : "only if in original unopened boxes , autographed by James B. himself"

No, I never really warmed upto the l100's. Loved the l100t3's, bot then again they were only $300.00...

Why so cheap? NO WAF

how the slender 9" wide L7 in "goes with anything black" gets a poor WAF rating, but the 250 series never gets the same mention? c'mon look at this picture, no contest.

wow..that pictured 250 has a terrible grain match..what were they thinking ?? .:(
and the surface is so dirty that you can barely see their beauty , and the skirts are really chewed up......understand the bad WAF, not even good MAF....

I had L7's in the LR...people walked past and never saw them....I thot them FUGLY.....OTOH , the compliments flow freely when people see the 250's ....most say "who makes those ?? they are beautiful !!"

c'mon look at this picture, no contest.

250's are designed to be viewed as a matched set...not a dirty single in a garage.

that picture is TiDome's garage, you'll have to ask him about the L250:)

people walking past the L7 without seeing them seems what every "W" wants in two 4 way towers in her house, no? that's my point about the 9" wide baffle in fade into the room black

While they may get a higher WAF if they're tucked back where the side firing woofers don't work right, they're not as enjoyable and not working as designed.

250Ti's get major GAF (guy approval factor), not so much so from the prettier crowd.

the prettier crowd has usually given my wood their approval.

while admitting that the L7 can sound pretty good (yes, I have owned a pair) ...the WAF factor maybe influenced by the fact that the 250/L7 side by side look like the before and after pictures from a forest fire.

And ignoring the appearance differences (and appearance does become a big deal when placing a large speaker in the wife's living room) , they are very different sonically.

the 250 is more accurate, less fatiguing , very smooth ...the L7 is more of a traditional JBL sound. ;)

for $300-$400 you should be able to get a cherry set of L100t. beautiful cabinet, not objectionably big, and a great sound. I've heard them against L100, L112, some studio series stuff from the late 90's, and some non-jbl stuff, and the L100t sounded far superior to all of those, IMHO. I always thought they are a great value on the used market.

Just my two cents worth.

how about a set of l110s someone close to me is selling them for 300.00 versus 700.00 for the l65s. are the l110s good speakers and will they be ok running with my mx-1000 yammie amp. thanx brad

Which is why I recommended the L7's to Brad, since his current music of choice is Classic Rock. Not to mention a 'bit' less cost!

You may also want to consider a pair of XPL-160's. I've heard a pair of these in a fellow forum member's garage and they blew away some of the older model JBL's for quality of sound. I'd love to have a pair myself and have been looking. They can be had for $500 or less. Match them up with an audiophile quality subwoofer and the combination will be pretty stinking good!

Lots of great replies here and all are spot-on. I'd be looking for (in no particular order) L5/L7, 120/240Ti, anything XPL and maybe even (stretching the budget some) LSR32 or 250TI. Even the 4410/4412 can rock out pretty well, if giving up some imaging and looks to the other speakers mentioned.

Hell, just about *anything* JBL made can rock out and take some watts. Isn't that one of the reasons we're all so fond of them ? They're not as fragile as some other well known brands and their good looks extend inside to the well made cast aluminum drivers that contribute to their ruggedness.

Best of luck in your search - there's tons of good stuff out there!

I think too much is being made about the WAF !! They have to sound good that's all that matters here Folks.;) Now he spends his $700-$800 and they don't sound to his liking he is going to be a very unhappy camper !!!

Good Luck with your search. Regards ~ AB
