Hi,

What do you think are the best or closest replacement for 2121 of 4343s?
According to JBL literature, there're LE10A, 10H, 111A, 2121H, 2122H, 2123H, 2012H, 125A etc.
Looks like forum members have different opinions on this issue.
Thanks for your insight in advance.

The closest substitute would be a 2122.

The last batch of 2121 kits from JBL were awful. I'll never deal with those drivers again.

What do you mean by "the last batch" here? Anything to do with their production years?
Just curious for this beginner. Thanks, 4313B.

I did a bunch of 2121's this past summer and the kits from JBL were awful. I don't deal with those particular kits anymore.

Still cofused... As far as I know, JBL no more produces 2121, right?
So, I don't understand what you mean by "the kits from JBL".
Are they the 2121 tranducers or factory recone kits?
Actually I'm thinking of having my 2121 reconed with JBL factory kits,
if I don't get these 2121. Yet, if what you mean is the recone kit, I may have to think twice about that. Thanks again, 4313B.

Hummmmm. I'm getting more confused, 4313B.
You said you were "aweful" about the JBL kits for 2121 this past summer.
If you felt that way, why do you recommend it to me?

I -think- the recommendation was to use 2122 kits, as the path of
'least likely to mess things up'

Thanks for the clarification, grumpy. I have to check back with him on this.
I still don't understand what're the problems with 2121, compared with other 10" transducers mentioned earlier.
By the way, are these 2122 kits still available?
I see 2122H in JBL literature, but not 2122.

I see 2122H in JBL literature, but not 2122.H represents the 8 ohm impedance version... which is what you will want. I am not sure JBL ever made a 16 ohm (J) version anyway.

I still don't understand what're the problems with 2121, compared with other 10" transducers mentioned earlier. The kits had 2122 cones in them wherein someone crossed out the last 2 and wrote 1. The coils were 2121 coils (debatable since they would only fit into the 058 gap cores and not the earlier 053 gap cores) but the coil leads were placed too high up on the cones so that even the four inch concave dustcaps wouldn't cover them. In short, they looked like some two year old put the kits together and whoever let them all out the door should be fired. You don't pay the prices they are asking for their recone kits only to end up with a box of bullshit.

You mentioned the LE10H in a PM and the LE10H is too inefficient for the 4343.

Now, I have to cut JBL some slack on these because the kits have been sitting on their "shelf" for some twenty years and that "shelf" has been in CA, AZ, and GA so one would expect some wear and tear. I cleaned all the cones and coils up very carefully with MEK (all that black rotted surround and coil protector crap is like tar) and refoamed them using surrounds from our favorite refoam guy. I got real lucky in that the 100 gram mass rings flopping around in the boxes didn't kill any of the coils. One of the mass rings did kill a center dome but I had an extra. They ended up very nice.

Back in the old days JBL would have checked the kits before shipping and put a fresh tube of glue in for good measure.

So, you don't recommend me having my 2121 reconed even with the original JBL factory kits, if I do understand you correctly? As grumpy clarified your statement, the best way's for me to go straight to 2122H? Thanks much again for your opinion, 4313B.

Thanks, Widget!
By the way, are you of the same opinion that 2122H is the right way to go, rather than my having the trouble of getting my 2121 reconed with its JBL factory kits?

All the 2122 kits I have gone through this year (alot!) have been just fine. Well, I had one out of round coil that I had to jack around with but other than that, they've all been fine.

I personally would be afraid to order anymore 2121 kits. me too :o:

after i got C8R2121 pair last year with some crack issue on the cone and after reading the JBL's point of view regarding my 2nd claim while JBL has changed the first cracked one by a new cone kit with some issue again (a small dot on it)

"after talking to 2 of our specialists in house we do not accept your second complaint. It is not warrantable! We are JBL Pro and not Hifi oriented. The "issue" with the cone kit is only cosmetical and will have no influence on sound. If you really insist on it, you can give the cone kit back and we will credit it for goodwill. But be aware that even if you wait for a next cone the danger is great that it will have also "issues". If it is so, we will NOT again take the cone kit back! " :dont-know:

The second exchange has been perfect :bouncy:

I've had a few cosmetically challenged kits over the last thirty years that I've had to eat because there was no way in hell on earth I was going to actually recone customer transducers with said kits.
