Hi All,

Once again, I'm back looking for more recommendations - but this time, its for my brother.
Although he is not much into "Hi-Fi" per se, he was really impressed with my DIY 4345 as well as a friend's JBL L300. Now, he is on the market for a pair of JBL speakers - something comparable in performance of the JBL L300s.

Although I can't just give my 4345s to my brother, I certainly have a bunch of JBL components I can give to him for free should he wish to pursue the DIY approach.

I have the following components I can give him:

1-pair, JBL 2470
1-pair, JBL 2420
1-pair, JBL 2441
1-pair, JBL-2397
1-pair, JBL 2202H
1-pair, JBL 2245H

I was thinking of recommending him the following:

JBL 2405 (Need to Buy) + JBL 2441 (Have) + JBL 2202H (Have) + JBL 2245H (Have)+JBL 4355 Equivalent Networks (Need to Build) + Ashly XR-2001 to bi-amp 2245H (Have)

I figured the above recommendation would keep the cost minimal as this is intended to be a budget project. Only thing he would need is the 2405 ($300-$400), and 4355 Equivalnt Networks ($200?) + Wood ($400 - $500). I'm hoping this would allow him to have a decent sounding monitor for approximately $1,000.

In regards for the JBL 2441, he is more than welcome to use them with my JBL 2397, but I think it would be better if he can get away with something like this: 2" Horn (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=264-316) (-not sure how it would compare to the 2311 in a 4355 configuration). Using this horn would allow him to build a cabinet where each component is centered on the baffle and is placed one on top of another, starting with JBL 2245 at the botton, JBL 2202H above that, 2441 above that, and 2405 above all.

Even though the goal is to keep costs minimum, I would hate for him to waste his energy building this monitor and not have it sound good.

Any thoughts on why the aforementioned recommendation would not work?

An earlier revision, never got built.

18" - 12" - 2" driver on Emilar EH500 horn - 2405H

Taller and narrower than 4345.

Thats a pretty neat layout Jeff.

However, I'm pretty sure my brother would prefer to make them to be even narrower/taller (i.e. still keeping same volume).

Any particular reason why you decided not to build the above project? Were you too thinking of using the JBL 2245H + JBL 2202H + JBL 2441 + JBL 2405?

Thanks,

D

Your project looks very interesting. I agree with the drivers choice.

Regarding horn - I would try the 2397 first, but then again I'm not a big fan of the tiny horns.

I have a similar setup, but with LE85 on a downsized version of the 2397 horn instead of 2441 on the real thing.

I just like doodling in AutoCAD. After Woody put his wood horns up for sale, the horn choice changed, so the rest of the cabinet changed as well.
