I recently got into tubes. I have a Sansui 1000A receiver and run it through L96's. A friend has a horn setup and we ran the 1000A through them and it sounded great. The horns were Altec 802D's through some baby cheeks horns.

So I am considering searching for 802's but am also interested in what JBL horn setup would be comparable to the Altec 802's.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

What horns did he have? Altec has some good horns but they can get into some big bucks. I have used the the 511B and 811B horns with the 802-8G and 902-8B HF drivers and I prefer the 511B and 902 setup. I doubt if you could tell the difference between the drivers but there is a marked difference between the two horns.

The 802 is actually the driver model they make an 805 multicell but they are for Large Format drivers (288) I would go with a 511 or an 811 the 811 isn't bad but needs to be damped so does the 511 really.Ex. like the 511E if you can damp them they sound much better IMO.Or you can use the large Multi's with the small format drivers(802,902,806) with a 21216 attachment.

I've got Altec 311-60 horns and EV HR60 horns with 288 drivers in otherwise identical three way systems. They are both being run with McIntosh tube amps from 1200Hz - 9KHz and they both work wonderfully with no issues. I prefer the Altecs by a slim margin but the fiberglass EVs are much smaller, lighter and a lot cheaper.

I have two extra pairs of EVs that I'll sell cheap if you're interested.

Thanks for the great information

The horns my friend had were, as he described - P&H knock offs of JBL baby cheek horns. They were rectangular but almost as tall as wide.

I like the idea of using one horn for everything except woofer frequencies for simplicity. I believe the 802 accomplishes this.

... I prefer the 511B and 902 setup....

Horn size is also a concern. I do have a slight WAF issue. My friends knock-offs had a nice face-print if you will.
