It turns out that JBL has been copying a Chinese company for many years. You can see by the photos that JBL has just been using Chinese designs and selling them for high prices to the unsuspecting. So why get upset about JBL not producing speakers in the USA. :eek:

Beyma speakers started out as JBL clones, I have some of them for the mid 1980s.
But Beyma has done their own design work also. They were a lower cost alternative to JBL, but Beyma prices have gone up to the level of JBL.
Maybe I'll take a drive out to Peoria some time this year!;)

I took a Chinese woofer a part a few weeks ago. Everything Jim Lansing designed for the Altec Lansing and JBL companies was missing.

It had stamped not cast frame, a stamped not machined top plate, a big VC gap, a round not flat wire voice coil, light not heavy motor, etc.

Of course I am just kidding. I am surprised JBL can't better protect its designs and sue this company. If you go to their website you will see more copies.

One thing to remember is that many companies start by copying and then go on to do their own good work. I think even Jim Lansing was sued by Western Electric on certain phase plug issues on his early horn drivers.

It would not be difficult for JBL to stop someone copying them. China does have laws and these companies could be stopped. Now I am not sure if you can stop someone from making a close copy of a 4642 sub enclosure (just two holes in a rectangle, but perhaps the screen arrays which are very unique looking or an Everest. I would leave that to attorneys.

I am sure Harman has the financial and political ability to stop copying of their unique intellectual property in China.

They could also stop them from being imported into the US if they can prove they have violated copyright, patent or trademark laws.

Rumor has it some folks in the Philippines are counterfeiting JBL Synthesis systems and JBL has had zero luck stopping them. That's just the Philippines. I'm pretty sure China can do whatever they want, whenever they want. I was reading the other day that they just raised the acceptable death toll for coal miners from three per day to ten per day in order to cut down on paperwork.

What current JBL technology is protected; I would think any patents on the horns, compression drivers, square-wound coils, have expired decades ago? So yeh, these guys made some cheap copies of JBL Pro Cinema in China but this is done all the time; right?

The threat is that these guys will vastly improve the product in the future and then run over the competition.

I'm not sure I would want to run Harman now; the challenges are huge.

Don't forget, GM and Ford went through some periods of abysmal quality control - Grosse Point Management figured we'd buy anything they made ... and the imports ate their lunch!
