Hi -

I have a question regarding speaker rebuilding. I am trying to accumulate a final K120 or 2220A/B speaker basket for reconing for a project I have where I want to recone these baskets with the 2202B/J recone kit. However, it, plus a driver I already have already has a K/E120 cone.

However, I would hate to waste the cones on these two drivers which are actually in very good shape. Now, I also happen to have a pair of 2202H's with very tired cones/suspensions that I could perhaps install the K/E120 cones on if I can remove them without damaging them from their existing speakers. My question is, would it be a better idea to put a paper or aluminum dust cover on the 2202H's if they have the K/E120 cones installed (I presume I would have to remove the existing dust covers to center the VC's)? I would plan to sell them, either way since my interest is with the alnico magnet versions.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The 2202 and K/E120 baskets are not equal, you should read this before proceeding: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?6585-Recone-question&p=63055&viewfull=1#post63055

The alnico K/D120 and 2202 can be interchanged but the 2220 ( which is a 15" speaker )'s magnet CANNOT be used. This has been posted many times and invariably in a posting someone messes up the model number.

The 2220 is UNIQUE and not interchangeable. period.

The later ferrite 2202H and E120 magnets will interchange kits but the E magnet is thicker which will alter the response curve.

BTW the voicecoil material, depth and weight are very different so changing dustcaps will only result in a cosmetic change. They would sound VERY different.
