Want to build hi fi cabs from 2225h,2425j and 2380a Horn

I came across a pair of 2225h,2425j drivers ,2327 adapters and 2380a horns on CL ,all for $150 and all in perfect working order. I already have some DIY subs from Parts Express,(400 watt 18" in T/S cab,properly built, sound great, -3db around 30). I would like to build a cab for the JBL components i just got and make a large tri amp studio monitor system. I have a dbx Driverack for the 3 way crossover. Plenty of amps by AB Systems. I was even thinking of using a Dynaco ST-70 for the horns. Anyway, is the 2380a a good horn to use with the 2425J driver? I will be about 10feet from the cabs in a 20x15 room. Any cab dimensions for the 2225h? Size isn't an issue.

Jim,

JBL 2380A horn is for 2" compression driver and the 2425 is a 1" compression driver. They don't match up without adaptors(which I don't recommend personally).

Check out the Pi forum at audioroundtable.org as Wayne Parham does a lot with his 4 Pi's which are 15" JBL's usually 2226's and compression driver/horn 2-ways!

Good Luck with your project! You either need 1" horns, or buy 2" compression drivers.

Thanks for the tip. Yes, the drivers have the 2327 adapter. That answers one of my questions, i need to get the proper horn for the driver and my use. Want to fashion a good 2 way and then add the subs. Should be rockin once I get the correct components and dial it in.

Jim,

I would use a 4 cubic ft cab for the 2225's and tune it around 40hz.

For the 2425, you could use JBL 2370A horn, drill out a Altec 811B or 511B for 3 bolt mount(Altec uses 2 bolt mount) or maybe even a Edgar round wooden tractix horn(smaller version of the horn in my avatar!).

There are several audiophiles around Detroit, see if any of them have 1" horns you could try out! You might try asking in this forum and see who responds.

I went to Wayne's Pi forum, he recommended this horn.

Not sure where you are in Detroit but if you want to try some 2344's I can let you borrow them for a try.

I would think 800 is a little low for the 2425. 1000-1200 would seem like a better choice.

Even the link for the horn in your post says minimum frequency of 1000 hz.

I think i will try the H290 horn that Wayne recommends first(a bit easier financially) and then I may take you up on trying the 2344s. What slope are these generally crossed over at?

Since you already have all the stuff, why not do it the natural way? Just hook it up and see how it sounds! :D
