IMHO, neither is worth bothering with. The L56 has a XO point that's too low for the tweeter, resulting in pretty bad distortion when pushed. The L40 appears to suffer the same fate.

The L46 will put either one to shame for clarity and accuracy.

Although I have only heard the L56, I'd probably agree with this statment on first blush. L56 is too boomy, even for a stereotyped "west coast" JBL.

What's the response to the same thread over on AK been? Haven't looked yet today. ;)
