Hi all,
I recently picked up a much-abused 288B driver, but the price was sure right ($50 including shipping across the country). So now I am trying to figure out if there is any difference between it and a 288C besides the diaphragm (as the one that's in my driver is not the original - it has a red colored plastic surround, no tangential surround). The reason I ask is I have an info sheet on the Altec large format drivers that makes mention of a shorting ring in the 288 and that the 288C does not have one. It also says about the 288, "Magnetic shorting ring must be removed by Altec factory before installing new diaphragm..." The 288B notes it must also be converted but does not mention a shorting ring. If 'shorting ring' meant the same thing back then it does now, I would consider having one in there to be a good thing. Can anybody out there provide more info? I don't really want to demag and tear into my 288B quite yet...

Thanks,
John
