Kinda really depends on what you like and what you think sounds good. I certainly have played my share of "classic rock" over the years and many here will suggest Pink Floyd, and the rest of the usual suspects, but I find music that is a bit less processed sounds better from a sonic standpoint. Here are 5 albums that cover a wide spectrum. Two are live and two have no vocals. None of these may be your cup of tea musically, but I like all of them and they all have at least a few cuts that are really world class recordings.

Steely Dan Two Against Nature
Al di Meola Kiss My Axe
Bill Evan Quintessence
Darol Anger and Mike Marshall Woodshop
Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat and The Hunter
Chris Whitley Soft and Dangerous Shores and Dirt Floor
David Sanborn Here and Gone
Lyle Lovett Joshua Judges Ruth

Depending on what you like

King Crimsom ITCOTCK Just because you can

The Moody Blues Childrens Childrens Childrens or ISOTLC doesn't matter

Ambrosia Either of the first 2 albums

New Riders Purple Sage First or Panama Red

Black Sabath 1 Just for fun Wasp

The Who Tommy

None of these will get the best recorded award however there are moments of pure magic in them. Just go through your stuff and dig deep. You are going to find stuff you have not listened too for a long time and then you are going to find yourself sitting there with your mouth hanging open.

Have fun

Here's some that you probably won't be familiar with, both local and international. All of them available through amazon.

Ane Brun - Changing of the seasons
Gotan Project - La revancha del tango, Lunatico
Roger Waters - Pros and cons of hitchiking
Bel Canto - Shimmering, warm & bright
Jan Garbarek - Visible world
Rein Alexander - Song for you

Don't see Sabbath mentioned here much, but "Fluff" off of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a very clean little intrumental.

It is fun to get a whole new record collection every few years when a major upgrade comes along.

I am really glad to see Widget mention The Big Phat Band! I have been enjoying them for quite a while!!!

And lately, I am completely hooked on an older recording of Vital Information. A band starring Steve Smith, an outstanding drummer that used to be in the group Journey. He got fired when Steve Perry wanted to do drippy ballads. Well, Steve Smith is my cup of tea kind of drummer, and has geared his music towards a modern day Chick Corea's Return to Forever band. Modern day jazz fusion!!!

(I still have my Billy Cobham drum sticks from high school and college band.)

It always amazes Lisa and I when playing a new little sound rig and we start to hear things that we missed before. Enjoy the ride until your hearing fails!

Scotty.

Not sure how you will respond to this but.........

Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bad albums are recorded just stellar.

PYT on Thriller is a song that I have found on my system to just keep going until you run out of power.

Dave Grusin's West Side Story ,NY LA Dream Band, Migration

Bob James Trio

and if you can find it
Return to Forever Romantic Warrior:D

What kind of musical flavors do you appreciate?

Go over to Acoustic Sounds and or Music Direct or whathaveyou & see what might sound good to you. Some of the equipment rags also review music with sound ratings also. "Music to die for" lists are always interesting if nothing else seems to be working...

So often "demo" music will exercise some combo of system strengths and show up the weaknesses but in the long run is not musical enough to just sit listen & enjoy as music....

Buckshot LeFonque Columbia CK57323
Lee Ritenour This is Love
Rattled Roosters Year of the Rooster

Enjoy your music

Return to Forever Romantic Warrior:DI can't say that I have ever heard the Michael Jackson stuff on a top flight system... I could imagine it might sound pretty good... but like someone said about "Planet Drum", I can pass on some music... regardless of how technically good it might be.

I have both "Migration" and "Romantic Warrior"... and enjoy both, but they are both so processed sounding that the magic is suppressed. In college I used to play "Return to Forever" on my big JBLs in heavy rotation, now I listen mostly for nostalgia. Today I prefer music that sounds a bit closer to the musicians.

But ultimately music is about touching your soul and not simply tickling the cilia in your ears. On a music thread elsewhere Heather recommended Boz Scaggs "Dig". On her recommendation I bought it. On first listen I hated it because of the cheesy sounding electronic drums. I tossed the disc aside and then one evening I popped it in the player for grins and really became enamored with a couple of the songs on the album. I am still pissed that he used the Casio drum machine, but like quite a number of other discs, if the music is compelling enough the sonics just don't matter. Thanks for that recommendation Heather! :bouncy:

I've just been listening to Tom Waits 'Franks wild years' over my 1400 clones and must say I was blown away-a bit eccentric but an audio/musical feast.

I have a quite catholic taste in music and listen to almost every genre. When it comes to great recordings, classical definitely offers the most choice (and the Array 1400's are really quite good at delivering everything from the subtleties of a string quartet to the the grandeur of a full scale orchestra), but if that's not your cup of tea then and you like Jazz, then I've found all the recordings on the japanese "Three Blind Mice" label to be outstanding. They are now available on SACD hybrids. The Masaru Imada Quartet are outstanding and if you can find it " One for Duke" is a great album..

its electronic experimental dub with live percussion. lots of subbass-groove, lots of dynamic percussion =perfect fo a horn system.
its dark, heavy, and its definitly not easy listening.

...
PYT on Thriller is a song that I have found on my system to just keep going until you run out of power.
...

same here! great track to really crank up!
if you like to listen to dance and electronic music, theres a lot of super-clean and super-dynamic stuff out.
minimal+house for example "milton jackson: crash", it really flies! you can kill any system with it, though.

on the opposite, i like the sound of the "real" instruments with minimal studiomagic.
big band-- "the art ensemble of chicago: full force"
tight band-- "wayne shorter quartet: beyond the sound barrier"

cheers,
mikey

Its too bad that you are excluding this huge body of music...I cant listen continuously to classical, but there is so much great material to enjoy in spurts...maybe start with something like Gershwin -Rhapsody in Blue- and develop from there...I'm generally a classic rock (LZep/Stones/Animals/CCR/Steely Dan/TYA) guy , but there are just so many times that you can hear it repeated before you start peeking into other genres.

I am a big Rush fan. .

Not to mention our tastes do change a bit over time. In college I had several roommates who were really into Jazz... I could get into a bit of Stanley Clark, Return to Forever and the rest of that fusion bit of the day, but I really couldn't get my head around real Jazz... today, I am far from being a Jazz fan and all that goes with that, but I really appreciate so much of it and probably a fourth of all new music I buy is Jazz.

Most of my classical is on vinyl. Which reminds me, I need to dust off a couple of my turntables and sell them so that I can get that new VPI. Anyone want an Oracle Delphi? ;)

If you still listen to jazz, let me recommend the following on your great 1400:

-Isao Suzuki, "Blue City", "Blow Up"
-Bill Evans, "Waltz for Debby"
-Sonny Rollins, "Saxphone Collosus"
-Miles Davis, "Kind of Blue"
-Gerry Mulligan, "What's There to Say"
-Art Blakey, "A Night at Birdland" I & II
- Sadao Watanabe, "Parker's Mood"

Hey. Lot's of good stuff there. Instead of waiting, I'll jump in. Kind of Blue by Miles Davis is the best thing you'll ever hear in jazz. Getz au go go is as good an album of tenor sax as you could ever hope to hear. you need one Sandy Nelson piece. Some Oscar Peterson, so on. go for it.

Buena Vista Social Club - one of the best recorded CD's I've ever listened too - you can really feel the room acoustics
Eva Cassidy - Songbird - seems like it's very close-miked, she has a fantastic voice - such a shame to die that young.

I couldn't agree more. I was fortunate enough to hear a local group a couple of weeks ago that left me wanting more. They are called the Ty Curtis Band from Salem, Oregon.
Here is a fist full of favorites:

Ty Curtis Band~ Cross That Line
Boz Skaggs ~ Anthology (1969-1997)
Andreas Vollenweider ~ White Winds
Seal ~ Best (191-2004)
Steve Tyrell ~ A New Standard
Dire Straits ~ Brothers In Arms

As I stated b4, classic rock is mostly my thang. Most jazz/big band doesn't do it for me, BUT.....yesterday I picked up the LP - Ray Charles - Genius + Soul = Jazz

http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?2724-What-s-Playing-Now&p=293797&viewfull=1#post293797

I listened 3 times and will put it on again today - its Charles on the B-3 with the Count Basie band and arranged by Quincy Jones....Wow, it was "over the top"

The point being - I had traditionally avoided both jazz and big band, but when presented with a great example, came around quickly to enjoy it...:bouncy:
