2446 has a ribbed diaphragm and "Coherent Wave" phase plug ... both
apparently to extract more high-end from the basic design.

ok but I got 5 horns with drivers on top of some Altec 828s with 416-8bs and they are both 2445js and 2446js
which ones should I keep, if not all?
what version sounds best?

It would be nice if somewhere find exact the differences in phasing plugs between these two types drivers. I believe that in either model it was tending to produce nearly plain wave front , or the differences are made depending of the horns to be applied. my experience with 2445 with D16R2450 membrane (for 2446) was that there is deep notch 15dB deep around 3kHz measured 2445 with 2311 horn.

Yes, I believe you have noted that now -several- times. I do not recall such a
notch in anyone else's measurement of this driver or horn (or in published specs), nor
for systems with which it is used:

Yeh, I use the 2445 drivers with an 8 ohm OEM diaphragm and it is smooth as hell up to my crossover point of 10K.

These are very competant drivers and I enjoy them much. With a proper horn, the drivers should not have a notch hole as you described. Are you sure you are using JBL diaphragms and not aftermarket ones? How are you assured that these are original factory diaphragms?

Today nobody can be sure, but concerning buying form JBL official representative give me some more trust. Unfortunately the results are bad, having no idea what kind of problem is present
