A friend of mine approached me with a problem he was having with a JBL
2425H horn type driver that they use in their church. Problem is it distorts at moderate volume. I recommended / guessed it might be a bad diaphragm so he had me order an aftermarket replacement diaphragm. Same distortion remains after the replacement was installed.

I've hooked the speaker up to different sources to eliminate a bad signal.

What else might be causing this?

Any help/suggestions will be appreciated.

First of all, I still wouldn't rule out the driver/diaphragm. It is possible that the new diaphragm isn't centered properly or perhaps the aftermarket diaphragm isn't any good.

Secondly, when you say several sources... typically a source is referring to a signal source ahead of the line stage (mixer or preamp) and power amp. I assume you changed ALL up stream electronics including the amp.

Is this a stereo set up? If so, I guess the other channel is issue free? If so, did you exchange channel one and two?

More data is needed to really help.

It is a stereo setup and my friend swapped speakers and the problem followed the speaker.

Is there other replaceable parts in one of these drivers that may cause the distortion?

Thanks.

Is there other replaceable parts in one of these drivers that may cause the distortion?Nope.

Can you pull the drivers and swap them? If the problem follows the driver you will need to send it to a professional reconer and have them diagnose a likely mechanical issue, if the problem remains with the speaker it is possible there is a crossover issue that is causing the speaker to overload at higher power.
