Superb cover art by John Glover and Dick Polak. It's Paul Rodgers! It shows pure iconic rock music attitude!
Kossoff doesn't play guitar on "Wishing well", "Muddy water" and "Easy on my soul". It's Paul Rodgers!
On track B3 "Easy on my soul", the guitar is played by Snuffy Walden (Stray Dog 1973-1974).
Andy Fraser is replaced by Tetsu.
Free were finally set free.....

At the time when Trikont Records decided to issue this LP in Germany, there weren't anymore master tapes left in USA. They were definitively lost for forever.
Even Floyd Westerman didn't own a vinyl copy anymore. So they had to look for a new vinyl LP copy on many Powwow-meetings.
Finally they succeded.......

Indeed a nice pair of vinyl Lps: Piper and Saucerful together, reissued on famous Harvest Label in a new gatefold sleeve.
Artwork by Hipgnosis show pictures of proposed but previously unused album cover designs. Several pictures depict a well-known phrase or saying in form of a visual pun. In USA the nice pair of breasts of the naked woman were made invisible. (Cit: Wiki).
Remastered and restored songs slightly different to the originals.
Superb German pressing with fine remastered dynamics.
Interesting: anybody who finds the differences between the US/UK Originals and these remastered tracks or the reissues of 2016?
After the huge success of "Dark side of the moon", this 1973 reissue introduced new fans to the earlier psychedelic sound of the Syd Barrett period.

After their legendary performance at Woodstock in the late summer of 1969, and their blistering self titled debut album, Santana would skyrocket to much deserved stardom and cement a place in rock history. But here, in the warm sounding Fillmore West in December of 1968, we get a very young and hungry Santana trying to find their way. The results couldn’t be more spectacular.

The first thing that knocks me over about this set is the sound, which is absolutely superb. Rich and warm, the sound captured that night in the Fillmore West is immaculately recorded and the stereo separation between the instruments, the percussion in particular, is stunning. Any early Santana fan should thank the stars that someone, somewhere, had the good sense to hit the record button as this is going to be one fantastic night of music (it sounds especially nice in headphones).

First out of the gate is a pulsating version of “Jingo” that seems to contain even more liquid fire than the later studio version found on their debut album. You can hear the percussion trickle in as the bass picks up the back beat and lays a solid foundation for Carlos to soar in with his psychedelic leads. The band grooves along and swings nicely without a care in the world and the polite West coast crowd is highly appreciative.

“Jingo,” with its constant pulsing rhythm, really sets the tone for the rest of the set which focuses mostly on hypnotic grooves and almost meditative song structures. The songs are all stretched as far as they can go and the band gets deep into the cut whenever they can. This usually leads to some excellent percussion breaks with congas and bass throwing the stage afire amidst the swashing leads of organist and pianist Greg Rolie. The band’s ability to alter all perception of what music is supposed to be, especially back in 1968, is astounding.

Speaking of Rolie, he is on fire throughout and, as I mentioned in my review of Tanglewood 1970, he almost steals the entire show away from Carlos. Where some of Carlos’ solos sound restrained and somewhat safe, Rolie is completely unhinged, setting his Hammond B3 organ ablaze with a fury. Not that Carlos isn’t bringing some amazing leads to the table, he is, it’s just that whenever Rolie comes on my ears prick up and I find myself studying the playing just a little more. Of course I have been on a B3 kick lately. Special mention needs to be made here of both Rolie’s and Carlos’ spectacular performances on “Treat,” the two musicians locking together beautifully in the late night atmosphere of the jam.

One of the truly exciting things about hearing these ’68 sets are all the great early and rare gems the band throws out. Throughout the discs we are treated to rarities such as the always mysterious, late night jazz tinged “Fried Neckbones,” the San Francisco styled funk of “Chunk A Funk,” and the great instrumental “Conquistadore Rides Again,” where Rolie and Carlos again mesh musically as if they had been playing together for decades. There is also an early version of “Persuasion” that features a blistering intro played in the San Francisco acid rock style but with a nice touch of Santana styled flavor.

We are also treated to a very rare 30 minute version of “Freeway” which may just be the most hypnotic song on here full of long drum solos, bass solos, and any other solo you can think of (I will admit that the actual drum solo is a bit tame, but remember that spastic drummer Michael Shrieve, featured in the 1969 Woodstock performance of “Soul Sacrifice,” has yet to join the band). Still, it is one amazing performance by all with Carlos bringing some particularly fiery guitar leads into the mix throughout the duration of the jam.

Santana Live at the Fillmore ’68 has been a favorite of mine for years and is highly recommended for any Santana fan. I can also recommend it for any fan of percussion heavy music in general as it is wholly satisfying and far from the watered down Santana of later years. The hypnotic, mesmerizing grooves and pulsing rhythms are sure to keep anyone grooving along throughout the night and there is much to be found deep within the musical layers.

Very much influenced by Frank Zappa, it's a nearly unknown masterpiece of psychedelic music.
Interesting from the point of view of today: Alice Cooper fans didn't like it in the late 60ies because Vincent Furnier hadn't found "his" style already.

You have to pay attention! "EU-production" is not a sign of quality anymore, because you even don't know the origin country of production (especially Tchechoslowakian pressings). And by the way: "Swiss made" is often not produced anymore in Switzerland exclusively.

Guitar, vocals, piano, vibraphone, humor and gags all by Slim Gaillard, Los Angeles 1945.
Musidisc was a very trustworthy french label, but this one is not for HIFI gusto because the tracks were copied from 78rpm Shellacs.
But i ask you:
Does it always have to be in HIFI? Real life isn't/wasn't HIFI too. At least for me. At least partly until today........

Previn p, Manne dr and Mitchell b recorded this one August 24 & 25, 1959.
The front cover is a 1939 painting by Ben Shan and is called "Handball". It is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

I'm a CCR fan . I think one the best tunes of theirs was not done by the group, but on a solo by John Fogerty. "Change in the Weather" sounds like the group tho. This tune is always on my iPod nano.

Didn't know the long was available on vinyl (just the short version) and today found this - in mint condition :) , by the weight they charged 71 cents :) :)

Joe Boyd needed lots of patience watching ISB going off in these directions. I think he mentions being puzzled in his retrospective book published awhile back - White Bicycles. I have a copy of this record in the queue. I love ISB and I'll reserve judgment until I listen, but this record might have been a bridge too far.

I agree with the allmusic review impressions:

The album feels like a solid stream of hippie cowboy music fed by cold Lone Star, lots of pot, and the occasional line. To listen closely is to miss the point. This is an album to be experienced with the senses, entering into the free flow of Walker (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/walker-mn0000845468)'s good-time world even for the 40 minutes it takes to listen to the album. But that's far better than nothin', ain't it?

1.) Wesley "Sox" Wilson eschews exaggerated vocal expressiveness in favour of clear and precise diction (cit. notice by Humphrey Lyttleton on inner fold cover). Listen to her on tracks A4 "Evil Gal Blues" and B5 "Groovin' The Minor".
2.) New Orleans born Pleasant Joe's trademark was a voice full of rough dissonance and frequently punctuated by the gasp, half chuckle and half sob (cit. dito). Listen to him on track B6 "Levee Blues".
3.) Oran "Hot Lips" Page was a genuine blues singer who expressed his own thoughts without reference to any formal lyric. Listen to his across-the-beat phrasing on track B2 "Blood on the moon"(cit. dito).

Interesting comparison: side A plays in 33rpm, B in 45rpm. All compositions by Frank Egli, kb. Fantastic dynamics.

Concerning my last post "Uncle Sam Blues": this one was rather prophetic.
The eagle presents his sharp claws that Europe has to respect.
There is a harsh heavy metal rocking American side 1 and a melodious soft country rocking European Side 2.
American side: "Fearless Leader", "Breakout", "Skull And Crossbones"......
European side: "Rude Reaction", "Mon Ami", "Calling You", "This is the end".......
Which one is the better choice? The fearless leader or mon ami? Anybody knows? Time will tell?
