The german pressing. The problem of this one: there was not really any song on this LP. Do you recall any song? Which one do you recommend? A tragedy: the master of stratocaster without any songs......

I like the record, but I like most of his records and his earlier work with Taste. I think it's full of songs with great hooks and guitar licks - Follow Me and Bad Penny, for example. Impressive songwriting - he was able to write so many interesting songs right after coming off a tour and an earlier record.

So did i. Finally there are 6 copies and 2 CD's in my collection: diverse pressings from England, Germany, Italy, Japan (CD), America (CD). Interesting comparisons are possible. But IMHO there's no doubt about it: vinyl is not approachable by CD. Perhaps i'm not the right person to be objective enough for this statement. I have to confess, that my ears are somewhat calibrated to vinyl sounds: since 1970, when i bought my first Pink Floyd LP "Atom heart mother". This is a german Quadrophonie version. SQ standards: anybody may explain SQ?

Here are the songs that i was missing on "Top Priority". 21 years old Rory Gallagher with the famous "much used" 1961 Fender Stratocaster. All through his career he played the same guitar! It didn't happen before, it wouldn't happen again: listen to RG's fine saxophone playing on the swinging track A3. Produced by Tony Colton. German reissue pressing with superb dynamics.

Blues? Chicago? British jazz influenced blues rock in the style of "Colosseum". More jazz and progrock than blues. Still a superb mixture! Produced in June 1969 by Chris Thomas at AIR Studios in London. Very much (ab)used english pressing vinyl with many scratches. You nearly don't hear the scratches because of the quality old English vinyl. Listen to every track. No fillers. All killers. Arthur Wood: piano and keyboards are great! This vinyl sounds so fresh as new.....Is anybody interested in further works of Climax Blues Band?

A superb live classic. Recorded in New York City at Town Hall, November 27, 1974. Found today in the "used records bin" at my favorite record shop BRO Records in St. Gallen Switzerland. These used records there are always in very good condition. Since 45 years i bought many many records of my huge collection there. This one is a very dynamic US pressing. Listen to the vocals of Jim Price. He was so much underrated. The master of telecaster brings "Nancy" to the top. "Nancy" was Roy Buchanan's 1953 Fender Telecaster. Anybody knows where Nancy is today?

Superb french pressing with mellow dynamics. Glossy cover. US record companies didn't want their records to be protected by glossy covers. Why didn't they? So we have always this disturbing ring wear on the covers of US LPs. The condition of the cover determinates the value of a record. So keep your records in plastic sleeves!!! It's worth the effort. Vinyl will last for many years, but the covers will fade away in some years. A record without a well kept cover is like a house without a roof.......
The dynamics of this one bring the gratingly sharp cutting sounds of the Telecaster more to the mellow tune. Like the sound of a bell.
Synopsis: this french pressing brings more mellow Telecaster sound than the US version with the sharp tune. And they wanted to protect their LPs for furthermore generations of fans.

Lyrics Analysis of Neil Young's Powderfinger

"Powderfinger": what does this word itself mean? Did Neil coin it himself?
Is it a regional expression of some sort? My take is that it's nickname for a
trigger happy kinda guy, who solves his problems with a gun. Come to think of
it, it may well be a personification of or a metaphor for fate, even death,
itself. I don't think it necessarily refers to the 22 year-old (from here on,
I'll call him "22"). If anything, 22 is a *victim* of Powderfinger.

My copy has the same inscription as yours. Sorry it was a lazy copy/paste from someone's description. This copy was not bad but did not have the dynamics that I remember for title. I recall that it was in the same class as the mid-70 Fleetwood Mac reprise titles for dynamics. I guess this one is not a first pressing, I picked it up for $2 earlier in the week.

There's a big story behind this one. How happy you are if you belong to the english speaking people. Is anybody able to translate the enormous amount of lyrics on inner sheet? What does the story tell? Very good english 1987 reissue pressing. Deadwax inscription "A Porky prime cut". Recorded at The Record Plant, Sausalito. David Bromberg dobro. Listen to the efficient guitar playing by John Tichy.

Interesting version of Lennon/McCartney's "Cry baby cry" Track A1. With the muscle shoals horns. Jeff Baxter and Buzz Feiten guitars. Neil Larson piano. Nicolette Larson and Jennifer Warnes backing vocals. What else? Ah, and yes, a fine version of Helm/Robertson/Danko "Live is a carnival". Is live a carnival for you?

great reissue from Experience Hendrix/Sony.

Interesting for guitar fans: There were 2 performances at this day at Haleakala Center, Maui, Hawaii, July 30th 1970. The early show was a standard set of the time for Jimi taking in some more recent material and some of the older songs. As an added bonus this 2CD set includes a limited extra disc of the second performance: The late show seemed a little more laid back than the first although not less inspiring. The other interesting difference for guitar fans is that for the second performance Jimi used his Flying V Gibson guitar rather than the by now regularly used white Fender Stratocaster. Only a small portion of this part of the performance made the finished film.
So enjoy listening to Jimi's Gibson guitar sounds during the Late Show!

One of the best songwriters in USA. A poet. This one is often referred to as Earles first "rock record". Heavy metal power twang bluegrass. Well, not trying to say female-written or -played music is overrated by the (mostly) male audience here in this thread, but on DVD (non -A) there's a certain correlation i tend to notice with friends all over for a few years ...

How about setting up a record player - the 12 " format favours the same gender in many cases, but to a slightly lesser extent?

Here's one alternative from D-land without that accent. Hope '70s are acceptable

This is mostly too smooth, I need some grit in my cup of tea. Some funky moments and some vibraphone to listen to while taking a break from the awesomeness that is this years NCAA basketball tournament march madness.

3/4 of my final four picks in my bracket are still going but the outer branches are badly broken by several upsets including N. Iowa's buzzer beater finish over Texas last night:

3 sides live. Side D is only one track: a 33rpm alternate studio version of "Don't ask me questions". Disappointing dynamics. The drums as example are not really existent with the typical charcteristics. Only muffled "boom boom boom" is not the drum sound that we may expect from a good live sound. Deadwax inscription: MASTERDISK sf. Does anybody own a better sounding version of this one?

Concerning my last post: this one is built on solid ground. Listen to beautiful track A4: the instrumental version of Clapton's song "Layla".
The liner notes on back cover say: "This album was almost killed by a gunshot, but it was saved by God, prayers, friends, doctors, therapists, more prayers and months of healing. Special thanks to God for a new life and to thousands of people who prayed for my survival."
Concerning this note: in 1988 he was shot down in front of his studio and badly wounded at his neck.

Smoking cigarettes is very important for a good voice but it's very expensive. But while making successful records, you may buy big rings for your fingers. The hairdresser also should be payed and the photographer waits for his payment. Sadly, after all that, there's no more money left for an acceptably good front cover picture art.......
I only payed 3 SFr. for this one in the thrift store last week. I didn't catch this one because of the dreadful front cover picture, but because of Reggie Young's lead guitar playing. Hope he was payed for his studio work........

Mastermind Rick Van der Linden had left the classic-rock group from Holland. The new formula showed a more jazzy concept. With little success. But for me this one was very important because it opened the doors into Jazz music. Superb pressing from Austro Mechana in Austria for the Swiss club edition label "exlibris". For vinyl pressings "exlibris" was a cult label then and today they are very sought after because of their quality and superb dynamics. They produced only little amounts of pressings using the mastertapes. Thanks to Austria!

Yes, i think it's a later re-issue. The first issue 1962 was the mono T 1821. To fake stereo was IMHO a trend of the late 60ies/early 70ies. But in USA technical and economical development was mostly pioneering.

The last record of Humble Pie with Peter Frampton was "Performance Rockin' The Fillmore". Shortly before the live album's release, Frampton left. The album's popularity helped the previous album "Rock On" to reach gold album status as well. (Cit: Wikipedia). Listen to Steve Marriott at the end of Fillmore's "I walk on gilded splinters" shouting "Rock on!!!" Frampton didn't rock on anymore with so much energy as on this one. What about Frampton after Humble Pie? What about Humble Pie after Frampton?

Hmm, I think the duophonic process was used by Capitol before the late 60's. I have lots of US Capitol records in the duophonic format which are clearly from the early mid 60s, examples the earliest Beatles and Beach Boys US releases - here's the discogs entry for the Surfin' Safari release: https://www.discogs.com/Beach-Boys-Surfin-Safari/master/246896

found this on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duophonic):

Duophonic" was used as a trade name for the process by Capitol Records (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_Records) for re-releases of mono recordings from June 1961 through the 1970s. Capitol employed this technique in order to increase their inventory of stereo LPs, to satisfy retailer demand for more stereo content (and help promote the sale of stereo receivers and turntables). For nearly ten years, Capitol used the banner "DUOPHONIC – For Stereo Phonographs Only" to differentiate their true stereo LPs from the Duophonic LPs.

It was a horrible format!

:) Wikipedia is your friend:

The term "honky-tonk" has been applied to various styles of 20th century American music. A honky-tonk (also called a honkatonk, honkey-tonk, or tonk) is the name given to a type of bar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_(establishment)) that provides country music (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_music) for entertainment to its patrons.

Pardon? I only tried to explain, that for the third time this carelessly repaired LP cover has driven shivers down my spine.......If there's a glossy surface of the LP cover, then sometime it's possible to pull those ugly sticker bands off. Guy Stevens' Sue Records was a cult label in England in the mid sixties. Compiled in 1967 by famous producer/DJ Guy Stevens. He brought Keith Reid into Procol Harum and produced the LSD- psychedelic cult record "Hapshash and the coloured coat" in 1967. So the liner notes on this one were added by Guy Stevens and Keith Reid in 1964. It was hip for the "mods" to own this record filled with black music. Notice on back cover: "For complete satisfaction play this album at full volume".
Canned Heat's "Let's work together" is the same song as Wilbert Harrisons "Let's stick together".
Historically interesting. No fun at all with this german reissue for hifi accustomed ears. You can get no satisfaction by playing it at full volume.....

Funny "macho" note on inner sleeve and on back cover concerning the performance of the background singers: "Screaming, shouting, sometimes almost singing". Dan Hartmann piano. What means "WLP"?

"White Label Promo" - the labels often put out their promotional / not for sale / radio station use records on white labels. Often these are among the first pressings because the labels wanted to get them into the hands of the radio stations and promoters as soon as possible.

Recorded at the Santa Barbara County Bowl, September 1979. Anybody been there then? It's only 37 years since those concerts. Jaco Pastorius bass. Pat Metheny lead guitar. Very fine US pressing though the cover is cut-out. To hell with them!!!! Why did they destroy covers so often? Shivers down your spine because of the clear concert atmosphere.......Listen to the beautiful guitar playing by JM together with PM on track B2 "Amelia".

what a wonderful band playing with Joni Mitchell on that tour, wish I'd seen it. Have always enjoyed this clip of the PM solo on Amelia from the concert DVD:

Dave Lambert "Framed" 1978, PD-1 6193 White Label Promo "Radio" Copy
Debut solo album by the lead guitarist for The Strawbs -- Dave Lambert. Great pressing, vinyl is in mint condition. Nice album--many of the songs are just as good as Dave's compositions that he wrote for the Strawbs and much of the album is similar in style to his Strawbs era material. This LP has never been released on CD, but I found this song (under the two pics) on Youtube (a good one, but not my favorite song from the LP).

Yes, the picture doesn't show the scale but these are about half the size of a 45. I think these were also sold in stores alongside 45s in the late 60s. I recall I purchased Sky Pilot - Eric Burdon & The Animals and Gotta Get a Message - Bee Gees in the pocket disk format - both of these came out in 1968.

Yes, it's the B side for Kentucky Woman. Another 1968 release. It looks like the song was titled Hard Road (Wring That Neck). On the 45 release for Kentucky Woman, they titled it Wring That Neck. interesting.

IPA stands for India Pale Ale. When the sun never set on the British Empire, sailing a ship from England to India involved a really long sea voyage. It was hard to keep water fresh even crossing the Atlantic so they carried beer instead. But regular English ales would not last the trip to India either so they had to evolve a style with more hops which lead to the creation of IPA's. Today with the explosion in microbreweries and craft brews in the USA, the hop heads are all trying to outdo each other making the hoppiest beer possible. There are double IPA's and imperial IPA's. In general I love them as long as they don't get too caried away and let the alcohol go too high. While mush is maid over the German beer purity law, in reality, nothing else is needed to make beer and rarely used except for some of those awful Belgium creations.

IPA is a popular hipster drink these days. :|

I might have a chance to sample your favorite beer, Fritz, as I might be in Switzerland for a few days in late July. I'm meeting up with family in Northern Italy, Piedmont, where they are staying for a couple of weeks, still figuring out flights but I'd like to either start or end the trip in the land of chocolate and cuckoo clocks.

Wikipedia:

India pale ale (IPA) is a hoppy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hops) beer style (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_styles) within the broader category of pale ale (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pale_ale).
The first known use of the term "India pale ale" is an advertisement in the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Gazette) in 1829.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India_pale_ale#cite_note-1) It was also referred to as pale ale as prepared for India, India ale, pale India ale, or pale export India ale

EDIT: I see that Dr. Gallup already gave a good overview of IPAs.

Rick Wakeman. For the first time BS decided to use keyboards. They fit in very well: the beauty meets the beast......Listen to the beautiful piano playing by Rick Wakeman in track A3 "Fluff". On track B2 "Who are you", Rick Wakeman plays remarkably synthesizer/mellotron/piano. Big orchestra concert atmosphere at the end of track B4 " Spiral architect". Rogues!
Fantastic cover picture art on front and back by Drew Struzan. (Look at his remarkable picture art on his home page!)
This is a 1980 Swedish reissue. Good pressing/dynamics.
BS will be in Zurich, Switzerland, on June 15, 2016 at the Hallenstadion while they do their "End Tour". Ticket price: 144 Sfr!

Yes. It's a feast of Memphis studio cracks! We may meet there also Rick Vito g, Steve Goodman g. Bonnie Rait harmony voc on the track you have mentioned. Listen to Steve Cropper's guitar playing on track B3 "Saddle in the rain".

By chance, while listening to John Prine's first 1971 LP with same title: the similarity of track A4 "Sam Jones" to Pink Floyd's "Post war dream" is unmistakeable. What do you think? A stolen song?

Fritz The Cat

Concerning my last post: track A1 "Post war dream" by Roger Waters is stolen from John Prine's song "Sam Jones", track A4 of his first 1971 LP.
But this Floyd LP is underrated. It's like cinema sound. One with the most superb dynamics on a vinyl LP ever. So listen loud! You may test your equipment with this one. Listen to the saxophon solo by Raphael Ravenscroft (remember "Baker Street") on track A5 "The gunners dream".
Good French pressing.

Is this a Krautrock album from Germany of the early seventies? No, it's the 1970 "Attila".
This is an italian reissue of "Attila" of 1981 with changed title and mixed tracks.
Does anybody own the original LP of "Attila"? It's a powerful acid rock as we know it from 70ies german krautrock. The parents of Billy Joel had to emigrate from Germany into USA in the 30ies. Interesting story of family Joel!
Good italian pressing.

Killer LP. really great sound quality - low frequencies, soundstage and separation make this one a great listen. I remember listening to Ride Captain Ride on hit radio back in 1970, there's much more on the deeper cuts.

Music by Shel Silverstein, who was Dr. Hook's songwriter. He also was the author of "A Boy named Sue". Only one track is sung by Mick Jagger. The songs are interpreted mainly by Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. Recorded at A&R Studios, New York City. During the making of this motion picture in Australia, Jagger's girlfriend took an overdose of sleeping tablets. She was hospitalized in a coma but recovered. So Marianne Faithfull couldn't play the lead female role and was replaced.

It's not Jazz. It's humorous light and crystal-clear guitar rock. Big fun. Clever. 30 years since the recording. Listen to the swinging track B1 "Who loves you now?". Listen loud and often.....

What means ESB?
I like the fresh "open" beer in the restaurant, which is not bottled. You can taste the malt very well in fresh beer. They fill the glass with beer out of a pressure container at the bar. 3 dl of "open" beer cost about 4.50 Sfr. in the restaurant. In swiss german regions it's called "eine Stange", because of the tall and thin drinking-glass.

A rare one. Good Italian pressing. Roy Young played piano with the Beatles in 1961 in Hamburg. Listen to his funky version of the Robbie Robertson song "Rag Mama Rag" with excellent power horns on track B1. Listen also to his boogie style version of Savoy Brown's "Wild country wine" on track A5 with funky horns. Owen McIntyre plays the typical funky guitar style as we know it from his Average White Band! And after having listened to this LP for the second time, i will put it on the turntable once again.........
This is a forgotten gem.

Concerning my last post, this is the other british funky piano player. Power trio live recording. No orchestra, no synthesizer, no background singers. No Buckmaster. Simple and pure power-play. Only drums by Nigel Olsson and bass by Dee Murray. Fun to hear this fresh concert atmosphere. Elton John Trio......

ESB = Extra Special Bitter Ale. I agree, even nasty corporate beer like Heineken or Budweiser is better on tap and fresh. Original Red Hook is unique and good on tap. I have a local microbrewery with a tasting room near the beach, just down the hill from my house - their Breakaway IPA i (http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24831/66759/)s great on tap and can be taken home in a growler.

Look at my post of 10-11-2015. I had the chance to get one of those 5000 limited boxes with the complete Riverside recordings on 18 LPs issued 1984. Included is a very detailed booklet with infos about every session. "Waltz for Debbie" is noted in 4 alternate versions.
Bill Evans also recorded as a sideman on Riverside Records: with Cannonball Adderley Quintet July 1, 1958. Chet Baker Sextet Dec. 30, 1958. Chet Baker Septet July 12, 1959. Mark Murphy Oct. 1961. Tadd Dameron Orchestra Febr-April 1962.
