this is one that I grabbed at the Canby Record Show .... somehow I had remembered HOT TUNA as Johnny Winter-esque , but it's more like bluegrass blues , somewhat reminding me of Mark Knopfler. it's really very good. Fortuitous mistake, :D

McDonald and Giles (self titled LP) 1971
6208562086
Founding members of King Crimson Ian McDonald and Michael Giles phenomenal self titled album from 1971. Some beautiful melodic songs and great performances on this album. You can really hear their influence and what sound they contributed to King Crimson. Kind of like the more melodic elements of the Court of the Crimson King album minus Fripp's "sinister" sound....

U.K. "Night After Night" 1979 (live)
6208762088
Great live album from U.K.'s 1979 "Danger Money" tour featuring John Wetton (ex King Crimson), Eddie Jobson, and phenomenal drummer Terry Bozzio. Nice song selection and powerful live performance. This was the second lineup for U.K. and a great one at that. Their first album featured Wetton and Jobson with Bill Bruford on drums and Allan Holdsworth on guitar....

Speed discrepancy The 40th Anniversary Mix of the debut album presents a stereo version of "Light My Fire" in speed-corrected form for the first time. The speed discrepancy (being about 3.5% slow) was brought to Bruce Botnick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Botnick)'s attention by a Brigham Young University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigham_Young_University) professor, who noted that all the video and audio live performances of The Doors performing the song, the sheet music, and the statements of band members show the song in a key almost a half step higher than the stereo LP release. Until the 2006 remasters, only the original 45 RPM singles ("Light My Fire" and "Break on Through") were produced at the correct speed.

(http://multcolib.bibliocommons.com/item/show/2237182068_shades_of_deep_purple) Some Girls (http://multcolib.bibliocommons.com/item/show/2142764068_some_girls)
RAM By McCartney, Paul (http://multcolib.bibliocommons.com/search?q=)
Tattoo You (http://multcolib.bibliocommons.com/item/show/2082444068_tattoo_you)
By Rolling Stones

Got to admit that the silly RAM has never sounded better, Tattoo sonically was fine too.
Shades was such a mess on LP, but great material ...hope the CD clears that one up.

interesting to see that George Harrison contributed a verse to the title song (not included) while with Donovan in Rishikesh India. The last verse of "Hurdy Gurdy Man" written by George Harrison is: "When the truth gets buried deep, beneath a thousand years of sleep, time demands a turn around, and once again the truth is found".

I've been eagerly awaiting the remastered "Shades" - Deep Purple as it just has outstanding performances all around. The Lp had terrible dynamics and we always attributed it to poor mastering. The liner notes said that they started on the remaster project and discovered that the master tape in their vault was just a dub from the LP .
And then they found the real master in the US and flew it back to Abbey Rd. to get started. Not everything is a huge improvement. Some of the extras should have been left in the can , but the music is so iconic/endearing that we've always put up with the iffy quality. Still is somewhat flat/2 dimensional.

BUT, the DSOM Immersion set is a joy/revelation . The DVD's sound is like the band is in the room , much recommended :applaud:

Great record! I picked up a nice copy of this for 10 or 15 bucks at a Seattle record show last year. I think it was about a month after Alvin Lee's passing and it caught my eye in a box of nice records from a seller I know and he gave me a good price.

yeah, I'd given up on finding a nice copy "in the wild" , but then 1 turned up

Sometimes it seems like groups put max effort/talent into their debut offerings and then it's a slow decline from there

I agree--unfortunately that happens with a lot of bands. They have years before they're in the spotlight to write, arrange, and record their first album and then are either pressured (by their record label, manager, etc.) or feel the need to crank out subsequent albums at a relatively quick pace.....

The Temptations "Papa was a rolling stone" ... they made lots of hits but
I considered it their best. Every time I grab one of their albums (GH, Masterpiece , etc.) it's never on there.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/the-500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-20110407/the-temptations-papa-was-a-rollin-stone-20110526

It's #169 on Rolling Stone mags 500 all time greatest.

Today I ran across a GORDY labeled Temps "One Direction" and I'll be darned it was there, all 12m05s* of it. To my consternation , it had set in a wet basement somewhere and the jacket was waterlogged/moldy. The vinyl looked OK under the powdered mold.
Gave it a try ... then cleaned off at home and it plays perfectly :applaud: . I of course have a digi version, but the vinyl lets me hear things that I can't on my MP3 copies.

I tossed the jacket and will find another to hold it. Sometimes a gamble pays off.

*label says 11m45s , but I timed it in at 12:05

colors were hard to photo, but here's a poor one.

EXTRA BITS: The song was parodied by comedian Bob Rivers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Rivers) in 1994 on Twisted Tunes: 1994 The Year in Review as "Grandpa Loved the Rolling Stones".
The song, the anchor of the 1972 Temptations album All Directions, won three 1973 Grammys:
"Possibly the greatest Temptations record of all time, "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" combined so many musical elements so well that it could be described as the group's own "Good Vibrations." A brilliant, dark bass and drum pattern sets the menacing tone to the rhythm, and is spiced elegantly by a jazzy trumpet, giving the song a slightly free-form air. On top of this, some steely orchestration adds yet another layer of darkness, making this one of the "blackest" Top Ten records of its time." (Allmusic link)

Sam Rivers, Purple Violets. One of the later dates from his long, illustrious career. He composed very well and played first class tenor and soprano sax, flute, piano and other instruments as well. Here, saxes in a quartet with vibes, bass and traps. Like Coltrane he was most accomplished ultimately with free jazz, but could play anything. Certainly one of the most accomplished musicians in the modern era.

This CD contains nine of the thirty-one million sides Rhapsody now offers unlimited, commercial-free access to. I wish I could live a few hundred years to have time to listen to all the music I am finding there that interests me.

Radiohead, In Rainbows. I really like some of this band's work. A fan of Cowboy Junkies recommended them to me last year as another outfit that has been together for as long and keeps getting better. As a soon to be sixty-seven year old music lover I highly encourage my fellow babyboomers to check out more music of the last twenty years. There is a lot to love and for me the best of it buries most classic rock six feet under. Your mileage may vary, I seem to have a mind more open than most. I am transported by almost every genre from free jazz to English Electric Folk to electropop to Gaelic, as long as the perpetrators are talented.

Perhaps the way I differ from most music fans of my generation is searching for music I like while ingnoring what I don't end up enjoying. (I notice that a lot of Boomers have the reputation as a group of bitching about culture. I call it the "You kids get off my lawn" syndrom. Are we turning into our parents, or what? ;) ) I refuse to paint a genre with a broad brush as I explore it. If I find an electropop artist from Scandanavia that I consider a waste of my time, I look for others who do it better instead of branding the entire community as something that holds no interest for me. That would be like giving up on headphones because I heard Beats. Talent trumps prejudiced opinion, given the chance.

Mary Lou Williams, Nite Life. Vintage jazz piano, definitely not strictly a men's club. Unlike a lot of the more challenging/fringe stuff I like, I think most of you would enjoy this two CD set. Solo piano, no vocals. She was a brilliant, evocative player, and this collection is relaxed in pace and flow.

I'm sure that 192 AAC will give better detail than mp3 , yes , but I'm hearing backing/undertones from the vinyl that I didn't know were in the cut on MP3. And weirdly
(I'm going to start another thread on this..) it improved even more when dubbed to MD.

RIP Johnny Winter 1944-2014

He was one of the true blues/rock guitar greats--I saw him live back in the 90's and he was phenomenal. Soulful playing and lightening fast chops. I own most of his early albums and have always loved his music. RIP Johnny--you will be missed!

P. J. Harvey, The Peel Sessions, 1991-2004; Focus, Focus 9 / New Skin; Peter Green, The End Of The Game; Cowboy Junkies, The Caution Horses; Branford Marsalis, Bloomington; Hilary Hahn, In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores. All CDs. I am pretty much one of those "It's all music" guys. Always on the lookout for artists who do it better than most. I even succeed sometimes.

A fun 50 cent clearance find. I'd never heard of this movie, includes Nancy Sinatra in the cast and was filmed in Sun Valley, Idaho. includes a couple of songs each from The Jimmy Smith Trio, The Standells, and The Animals - and The Girl From Impanema - Astrud Gilberto

In this month's poll, many agree this decade has the worst music in the 45 years since Woodstock

Nearly half of the Americans that we asked still listen to music the old fashioned way, they listen to the radio. Seventeen percent have opened Pandora's Box and use a digital music service most of the time, 15 percent are usually "plugged in" to one of their personal electronic devices, nine percent still spin CD Players, six percent use their computers and one percent are really old school, they still spin vinyl. As you might imagine, the devices that people use are often related directly to the age of the user. Only 24 percent of those under the age of 35 are still "radio heads" while almost two out of three of them use personal devices or digital services. Now that's music to the ears of the people who run those industries.

don't want to start a new thread, so dropping Richard Nixon here

Nixon was quite musical, and played five instruments: piano, saxophone, clarinet, accordion and violin. After leaving the White House, he also gave some thought to rap music. On an audio tape at the Nixon Library, the former president can be heard saying (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/08/07/richard-nixon-wannabe-rapper/), ”I have often thought that if there had been a good rap group around in those days, I might have chosen a career in music instead of politics.”

It wasn’t just instruments Nixon surrounded himself with; he kept company with some famous faces of the music industry as well: On December 21, 1970, Elvis Presley paid a visit to the White House (http://www.buzzfeed.com/briangalindo/the-bizarre-story-behind-the-time-elvis-met-nixon#mos8tz) after writing a letter promising to help Nixon fight hippies and communists, and during the meeting he also promised to fight the Beatles.
