I've been getting lucky lately .... 6 weeks ago I grabbed 21 "like new" LP's at GW (Doors,Stones, Dylan, Floyd etc) ....2 days ago, another 6 in NM shape at 40 cents each ....today walked into a thrift as they were putting out new vinyl ....snagged about 20 off the top that were NEW/SEALED.

Sorted out the Barry Manilow and AirSupply ones, but still bought 10 sealed at 50 cents each .....Listening to Chicago's GH right now ...it's been so long since I've opened a brand new record , sounds wonderful ....(but there are still clicks/pops )

that 1971 Shure V15T3 has been one of the best audio buys I ever purchased. Still is stunning :bouncy:

a vacuum-based record cleaning machine might help. even new sealed record will benefit - to remove the vinyl mold release (and paper fibers if they came in a paper sleeve).

Nice score! This is my favorite ELP album. As much as I love the vinyl version of this LP, the new DVD audio version (produced by Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree) sounds absolutely stunning--incredible clarity and resolution. DVD audio is a sadly neglected format IMHO....

The Tarkus DVD Audio has audio only on it, no video footage. I wish they'd release more music in the DVD audio format because on a nice audio system with great speakers you can really appreciate the increased resolution and clarity compared to other audio formats such as CD. However, some DVD audio titles have both audio and video footage like King Crimson "RED" (also produced by Steve Wilson). It sounds phenomenal in the DVD audio format and besides the DVD audio recording of the album also includes very rare live concert DVD video footage of King Crimson with one of my favorite personnel lineups of the band (Bill Bruford, John Wetton, Robert Fripp, David Cross). Here's the link for that one (interesting listener reviews for this title and Tarkus as well):

http://www.amazon.com/Red-King-Crimson/dp/B002GYVRRI/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1370090727&sr=1-1&keywords=king+crimson+red+steve+wilson

I like the fact that John Fogerty is still to this day recording/performing some great music in 2013. I saw this excellent performance by him on the Letterman show last week--this classic song is also featured on his latest 2013 album. Here's the clip of him performing "Someday Never Comes" on Late Night With David Letterman. Be sure to watch the full clip, because the song builds nicely and this performance/song really shines by the end of the performance.....

I'm officially jealous--Quadrophenia is my all time favorite Who album--I'd love to see them on this tour. I won't be surprised if this is their last tour to feature the album in it's entirety (given their age). If possible, please post a few pics from the show here (or a youtube clip if you can shoot a quick video on your phone).

By the way, I really like "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy" that you posted the other day as well. Great collection of some of their early stuff. I've owned that album in many formats....

which is electronica/trance/BLU based. I was listening along the other day and heard a song that kind of put the hook in me, so I got the info and bought the CD. It is....

Zero 7.....Simple Things
The song is In The Waiting Line.

I like the whole album, a couple songs more than others. Found this version of the song on YouTube so I thought I'd put it on to give y'all a little taste.
(The video part has nothing to do with the song, but it is purdy.)

Wow - Marcus Miller is quite the bass player, lots of slap bass and pounding rhythm.
And guitarist Mike Stern riffs well. Great band. Miles is not at his peak,
of course, that was years before, this is comeback miles after his 6 year sabbatical,
but its still a fun recording.

I thought I posted this reply but don't see it. :dont-know:

I enjoyed the link and ordered the three-CD set from the artist's web site. It was only slightly more than ordering from various on-line sellers or used-CD providers and it is my hope that a deserving artist will get a bit more monetary reward for their work and talent from my doing so.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've had a pretty good month and I'm feeling generous and looking forward to a nice listening session soon!

Alison Scott - Chinese Whispers

A friend turned me on to the iTunes track last fall -
I liked it and bought the Chinese Whispers CD,
then recently bought the rest of her recorded works

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ftvh3i1KelQ The Trains (soulful smokey jazz)

http://alisonscott.com/listen/

59286I'm struggling to find more than two tracks worth listening to. "Trains" is great. I'd love an entire CD of nothing but that type of writing, singing, and recording. But the reality is that cut seems to be engineered by a totally different crew as the rest of the album is flat and lifeless. The title cut is another good one but way too short.

Her second CD is a tedious listen full of mediocre covers in a repetitive nasal vocal presentation. The earlier CD is a bit better but I'm still undecided as to whether or not it will ever see even ocasional rotation in my listening selection. Too bad, I was hoping for better after the links.

But don't let that stop you recommending what you find!

I had to eventually switch to the latest Daft Punk CD "Random Access Memories" just to remember what a good recording was supposed to sound like.
Thank god for Nathan East! :applaud:

I had Pandora rolling on TYA station and some great blues came on , but not recognizable artist ...checked it out , turned out to be an unknown (to me) named Gary Moore. I made a station for him and have been pleasantly impressed with what I've heard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Moore

Robert William Gary Moore (4 April 1952[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Moore#cite_note-1) – 6 February 2011), was a Northern Irish musician, most widely recognised as a singer and guitarist.
In a career dating back to the 1960s, Moore played with artists including Phil Lynott (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Lynott) and Brian Downey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Downey_(drummer)) during his teens, leading him to memberships with the Irish bands Skid Row (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skid_Row_(Irish_band)) and Thin Lizzy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin_Lizzy) on three separate occasions. Moore shared the stage with such blues and rock luminaries as B.B. King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B.B._King), Albert King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_King), Colosseum II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colosseum_II), George Harrison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Harrison), and Greg Lake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Lake), as well as having a successful solo career. He guested on a number of albums recorded by high profile musicians, including a cameo appearance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameo_appearance) playing the lead guitar solo on "She's My Baby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She's_My_Baby_(Traveling_Wilburys_song))" from Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveling_Wilburys_Vol._3).

Some really cool stuff represented here.

I thought I was really cool when I found a collection of Deutsche Grammophon album sets last month at a Goodwill for half a buck a pop on "Senior Halfprice Day".

I bought all that were pristine along with some rock, jazz, Barbra Streisand, Neal Diamond as well. Added 37 albums to my collection in one stop
(most of the classicals were doubles or triples, etc.).

I am still amazed at what can be found, if one LOOKS!!

I will try to "follow the format" as I show pics of my new treasures, soon.

Wow ..the last Johnny Cash album , a "near to death" recording. Emotional and soulful. His voice is somewhat shaky but still under control. You can feel his pain. If you've ever enjoyed JC , this is a "must hear"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_VI:_Ain't_No_Grave

American VI: Ain't No Grave is a posthumous album by Johnny Cash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Cash), released February 23, 2010, on American Recordings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Recordings_(US)) and Lost Highway Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Highway_Records)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_VI:_Ain't_No_Grave#cite_note-billboard-1) Its release was three days prior to what would have been Cash's 78th birthday.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_VI:_Ain't_No_Grave#cite_note-2) The album's music was recorded during the same sessions as American V: A Hundred Highways (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_V:_A_Hundred_Highways) (2006). The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_200) chart, selling 54,000 copies in its first week.

Yes back and looking forward to some listening time as I get caught up with work. The Who concert in Paris was a real treat for me, seeing a band that I rate up there with the Stones and the Beatles. The Quadrophenia songs were great and they did a great version of Baba O' Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again. Tres bien!

I love those liner notes--I've heard most of these Kinks songs but never had this album or read the notes before. I think it's safe to say the national heroes referred to are Pete Townshend, Ray Davies, Mick Jagger, but who is Dave? Not Dave Davies, maybe Dave Clark? In one of my favorite interviews with Tom Hanks (he was promoting the GREAT movie "That Thing You Do" anyone here ever seen it?), he was joking about the fact that when he was a kid growing up, he thought that the Dave Clark Five was better than the Beatles because they had five guys and the Beatles only had four--and also because the Dave Clark Five had a sax!

Good catch, the DC5 were hot in 1966 so I bet that's Dave Clark. Funny story from Hanks!

Picked up these 4 yesterday , the 2 Spirits are UK.

Dubbed both the Spirit albums today ..."Feedback" is OKAY + , but "The Family That Plays Together" , was quite special. I really, really enjoyed it. Helped that the vinyl was so pristine and well pressed (180g) .... looks like the critics agreed. (links below). Don't know how I avoided SPIRIT so long ...now I'll have to dig out my copy of "12 Dreams" that never got played ...:o:

(those big a/d/s 1290 towers ain't goin' nowhere 'till after I'm gone ..)

LATER: I checked my local library, they have a remastered CD of "12 Dreams" & "Family" on 1 CD ...didn't take long to put a hold on that one ... :)

Buffett's first record with singer songwriter folk-rock, including a track on side 1 - Ellis Dee. A nice version of The Captain and The Kid which he recorded later. Apparently there weren't a lot of copies sold. I was surprised to run across this one recently in NM- shape. Barnaby was Andy Williams label under Columbia.

It's a live recording and no sonic masterpiece so it's probably not super important to have this in vinyl format. Max's in NYC was apparently a key location, i.e. Walk On The Wild Side. Lots of informal band and audience chatter between songs.

Picked these up yesterday .... I was a little hesitant about Roy Orbison & Friends "A Black and White Night Live" as I'd seen it on PBS and was rather put off as how they allowed Springsteen to push to the front like it was his concert. He really acted like an ass. Fortunately this album contained very little from BS. It was recorded a year before Roy's death and he was in great form.
His rendition of "Oh, Pretty Woman" (extended...6m:35s) is one of the best. "Dream Baby is very fine too.

and Marty Paich ?? :wtf: .... OK, I've seen this album in so many catalogs (I think because of the cover pic) , but those are all new copies. This one is an original 1959 Mono. Will just send to my son to sell, but I was floored by the 2 eBay listings for this .... BINs of $110 & 200

Album Review

The best-recorded Roy Orbison live disc ever issued, taken from the soundtrack of the HBO concert from the 1980s with VIP guests like Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello. This was a sort of magical video, and the performances are splendid, along with the good feelings involved. On the other hand, the performances are extremely reverential to the established studio versions of the songs (all of the hits are here), and intended to mimic them, so this isn't quite the same as a live album as it would have been done back when. The pity is that neither Monument nor MGM ever taped any complete concerts by Orbison from the 1960s, and all that remains are TV appearances from Europe.

Been enjoying "The Story of Them Featuring Van Morrison"

Amazon.com
The ever-in-flux Belfast-based ensemble nevertheless ranks with the Animals and the Rolling Stones as fine purveyors of bullish, non-American '60s rhythm and blues. The Story of Them is the definitive account of the short-lived outfit. Fifty remarkably consistent tracks are spread out over two discs, including R&B standards ("Stormy Monday," "Turn on Your Lovelight," "I Got a Woman") and Morrison originals that laid the groundwork for his early live repertoire ("Gloria," "Mystic Eyes"). Other highlights include a powerhouse version of "Baby Please Don't Go" (with Jimmy Page soloing), fearless takes on Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" (Beck fans will recognize the sample that turns up on Odelay (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000003TBP/${0})) and Paul Simon's "Richard Cory." Morrison's grown-up work is unassailable, but there's much to be said for what he accomplished as a snot-nosed rocker. --Steven Stolder

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Story_of_Them_Featuring_Van_Morrison

Now I GENERALLY don't care for the solo work of Van_Morrison , but here he is very "Eric Burdonish" and THEM sounds VERY Animal-like , and I am a big Animals fan. In this incarnation, Van has more of an edgy-ness just like Eric. Gloria & Mystic Eyes are especially fine.

Also since really enjoying "A black & white night" with Roy Orbison, I did some reading up and found many recommendations for his last album "Mystery Girl".
Searched the library with no results, but then discovered that I owned a copy on vinyl. :D It's good.

Read a little more about Roy and it turns out that on his 1963 Euro tour, the opening act for his show was ............................The Beatles. . In later interviews, when The Beatles had made it big, they related that Roy was THE one act that they hated following.

Also Roy was almost the only artist to have top 5 hits at the same time on both the pop & country charts (except for Elvis)

I'm also a fan of Roy Orbison. I agree that Mystery Girl was an excellent final album for him. Great songwriting, his voice was still amazing, and Jeff Lynne (ELO) did a phenomenal job producing the album. He and Roy were very close from their time together in the Traveling Wilburys. I'd heard in an interview once that the Beatles were Roy Orbison fans when they got their big break, and I think it was George who was a big Ritchie Valens fan as well....

Also "The Traveling Wilburys" ONLY vol 1, not vol #3 , Roy was dead by then and the album suffered (IMHO) . From Mystery Girl , "You Got It" sounds like classic R.O.
