No boxed set, I just ordered them all from Music Direct. Funny thing is they have the same address as Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. They should be the same ones that CD universe has. If this list is different, please let me know if something else is out there on super audio.

Hi all.

I just bought Tony Joe White's "UNCOVERED". Guest artists are J.J. Cale, Eric Clapton, Waylon Jennings, Mark Knopfler and Michael McDonald.

This Cd has a very good sound, and after song no 3 I just had to search the net for the studio this album is recorded. The "Church St. Studios (Franklin), and find nothing!

In the comments Mr. White thanks the musicians who played with him in "this old studio".

This album gives me "the good old feeling" when most albums was recorded and mixed on JBL speakers.

Does anyone of you "over there" know or have the possibility to find out?

I will recommend this album to everybody ... That is if you like the music of course.

The finger slipps on strings recorded all over nearlly every track

Gotta hand it to you, Ducatista - yesterday I found a film called SunRa: A Joyful Noise (just under an hour long) - I downloaded it and watched it last night - its a documentary about Sun-RA circa 1980 ... neat stuff!
Now all I have to do is figure which of his stuff to go find! I think for me it'd be best to start with his earlier stuff (50's?) and then move forward ...

Anyway - thanks for all the Sun-Ra discussion earlier this year!

Firstly, I wish I'd seen that! Any idea what network it was on?

The Arkestra had (and is having) a long evolution and changed the style of many compositions in performance as time went on. You might love an earlier recording of a piece and find a later performance incomprehensible. Sun Ra was responsible for as many musical innovations as Les Paul has been for technical and recording ones. For what it's worth, I had to expose my ears to a lot of free jazz for months and months before I had the "Eureka!" moment. Suddenly, I got it. Suddenly, I could hear it. I guess I'm a slow learner.;) Now I actually listen to heavy jazz to relax and wind down, because it makes me so happy.

One very early album before the "wilder" free jazz period is called Jazz In Silhouette (Evidence 22012 - I got it recently at Barnes & Noble no less!). The liner notes are good and it does make a great introduction. I listen to it all the time. Late at night, lights out, I put this on and punch track 4 - "Ancient Aiethopia." If I don't have time to listen to anything else, I am still satisfied. I've had my fix.

The links at the first entry will get you where you want to go, but I have included two for convenience.

You will find that Arkestra recordings were almost beyond number, but Saturn disks were not widely distributed, and were often not very hi-fi. Evidence records and others have done an amazing job of cleaning them up. Sun Ra was probably the first to record and distribute his own music, but that meant pressings of 75 vinyl copies for sale at performances.

John, the discography links might ring a bell with the title you "donated" to the criminal element.

PS The inconsistent element was partially due to the Arkestra playing so many styles of music at the same gig or recording session. I imagine not many people would enjoy everything at a performance. The few sermons I've heard were fun, though. I need to get his book.

Clark -- This is the same film that I mentioned to you some time ago that I saw on PBS (I think) This was my intro to Sun Ra and the reason I became interested in his music.

Over the last week or so I've been reading through the various threads on the model 4343/4344 and 4345 monitors (as a speaker goal).
From a thread called Ian's (& Bo's) 4345 project - (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=952&page=8)[I read this line:

So - after an Amazon order and a bit of time ... I'm currently listening to track 7 of Positive Thinking. What a fine workout of my humble 4320s ...
(got to listen again tomorrow when I can work the amp a bit more).

I can only imagine what it sounds like on the big 4ways ...

Moldyoldy, I dearly love every note on this album; same story with most of Ry's work. BTYD was notable as the first digitally recorded pop album, and Ry later came out strongly against the sound of digital recording. Not sure where he stands on it these days. The album sounds a bit too squeaky clean and threadbare to me, but not bad really. The music is just tremendous. The Paris, Texas soundtrack is another brilliant effort by Ry; try to find the LP.

Yup, it's a keeper, Steve. I wore out TWO LPs, making it a record record for me.

Ry's picking's been an inspirition to me since I first heard him on Let It Bleed. More than one of the early Stones' catchy riffs were Ry's, and there's a long list of greats he did guest spots for (his time with Lowell George is some of the best). Not to mention the soundtracks.......And there's still those that ask "who's Ry Cooder?"

Ry doesn't know it, but I'm building an amp for him....actually I've been 'building' it for a couple years now...kind of a personal Project May.....hope I call it good while he could still use it. Steve, you'll understand, it's based on an old Hammond M field coil chassis, along with a variable speed vibrato scanner and line box. Fender input stages (cascadeable), stock Hammond out. Oh yeah, reverb too. The true vibrato is the kicker, and sounds so sweet on appropriate guitar selections, it just oozes Ry Cooder. The first time I used it, I knew what I had to do.

BTW, since I think he lives out your way, if you ever happen onto a verified shipping address for Mr Cooder, I'd be eternally grateful.

I pulled out Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, A Better Land to make some speaker-to-speaker comparisons. I enjoyed listening so much I kept the disc out and listened to it two more times after the comparison was done.

For some, it's an acquired taste, but I loved this album from the first note to the last when I put it on the turntable in 1971.

Delicate percussion, blended harmonies, complex rhythms, slow songs, fast songs, traditional songs, eclectic songs, keyboards, a variety of guitars, there's a lot going on here. Even the seemingly simple songs are deeper than you first think.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I'll drink the full pot, thank you.

Hey Dome -- It's good to see another Oblivion Express fan out there. :applaud: I've been hooked on the stuff since their first album in 1970. I replaced them all on CD and in the case of the Live stuff, burned them onto CD from the records since the CDs are almost impossible to get or hugely expensive (I take that back, i just checked Amazon.com and they are available). If you haven't heard it, you might want to check out his 1999 CD, Voices of Other Times (there is a 2006 digital remaster of this). His kids make up a good part of the band on this. Savannah Auger's vocals are a real pleasure on my JBLs and Brian continues to make music that is new and unpredictable. :band: :banana: :banana:

a guitarist, Bass, irish flute and 3 vocalists.

I have a couple of his other CDs but this one has a much broader spectrum - a real workout for my 15s!

The music is pretty - new age, but ... what a bottom! Fat!

I know I know I've discovered it a bit late...A friend played a bit for me and I bought it some time ago... it is a wild trip. The sound is excellent, especially for a live album, and the music is compelling.

I had no idea that it was discovered by "those audiophiles". :bouncy:

I got a UK copy of the "Pulse" DVD last year, when folks were talking about it here, before it was available at Best Buy, etc. Its ok - but I didn't think the audio or video was that great - a kind of a vintage DVD sound (it IS a 12 year old recording). I greatly prefer the Cream 2005 Reunion DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Cream-Royal-Albert-London-2-3-5-6/)or The Concert for George (Harrison). (http://www.amazon.com/Concert-George-Klaus-Voormann/) I thought both of those shows were much better sounding shows, and both feature really grand playing by Clapton.

For a completely different kind of sound - The Goldfrapp live DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Goldfrapp-Wonderful-Electric/) (2004) is pretty good too, or track down the 2 disc version of Supernature (http://www.amazon.com/Supernature-Goldfrapp/), the latest Goldfrapp CD which comes with a bonus DVD of live and studio videos.

Edit: Actually there is a reason. My wife and I watched the Leonard Cohen video "I'm Your Man" last night and my entire Leonard Cohen collection is on this album ("Tonight Will Be Fine") and even though I thought Teddy Thompson did a nice job singing it on the video, I thought it was a little sweet and wanted to hear Leonard Cohen singing it himself the way it should be sung. Now I'm listening to Hendrix, which is the rest of that side, and I'll probably go through the whole album or at least a good part of it. Despite its faults it has the immediacy that you listen to live albums for.

any of santana's first 3 i would say and bits and pieces from the rest.i guess a couple of my all time faves are king crimson in the court of the crimson king,the yes album,kind of blue,and sgt peppers.actually coming up with a definitive desert is. disc is nearly impossible unless i can narrow it to a top 500 or so.

speaking of too old to rock .....the first 4 tull albums come to mind.while im not quite as addicted as superbee i calculate that if i play 1 album a day it will take 3 years just to get through the cd's.yet every week i find myself in the shops buying more.

They owned that particular style of music for several years. They were good. Inumerable groops came to exist that might not if it weren't for them. Although, these days I think I prefer to see John Stewart do his solo work to Bob Shane with a couple of guys who may or may not have heard the trio in its firs incarnation.

Levon moved his mom to a neighboring town, and occasionally plays a local club with some yokels he goes way back with (The Cate Bros) when here to visit, an event I've managed to catch a few times. Think The Hawk may have been from here originally too. My (ex)sister-in-law went along as a traveling groupie on an early Canadian summer tour, and had her first baby in a station wagon on the road between gigs. Never would tell me who the pater familius was...

jim and herbman, i am currently gathering up all the mingus i can find in the used bins all throughout the philadelphia metrpolitan area. my favorites are mingus ah-umm and blues and roots. i been into the blues for a long time. attend the pocono blues festival every year and seen just about every major act live ever many minor ones. it is a pity mingus (my current favorite) is no longer with us. but, it is great to talk tunes with a person with good taste. :applaud:

Someone will crap, but I got the Shades of Deep Purple and Book of Taliesyn off eMusic as MPEG music files at 256 kbps, 44.1kHz samplng rate, and it sounds better than the original issue CDs and the remastered CDs I bought. Lots better than the LPs, too. Sadly, no self-titled third album, Deep Purple is on the site, or I'd grab it, too.

So, guess what I'm listening to now?

An oldie but a goodie--and, in my opinion, at least, one of the best--"Hey Joe," by The Music Machine, from "Turn On (The Music Machine)" which appeared, to the best of my recollection, in 1966-67. I've recorded it on a CD. Those guys were ahead of their time--black leather punks in an age of Flower Power. Their one big hit was "Talk Talk."

(If someone does not know Helge Schneider you will not have missed anything. :nanana: Is he a an artist, a comedien - who knows? Most of time he is slowly in his presentation and he does things you would not expect, except you know him.)

Kris Kristofferson's father was an Air Force general who pushed his son to a military career. Kris was a Golden Gloves boxer and went to Pomona College in California. From there, he earned a Rhodes scholarship to study literature at Oxford. He ultimately joined the army and achieved the rank of captain. He became a helicopter pilot, which served him well later. In 1965 he resigned his commission to pursue songwriting. He had just been assigned to become a teacher at West Point. He got a job sweeping floors in Nashville studios. There he met Johnny Cash (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0143602/), who initially took some of his songs but ignored them. He was also working as a commercial 'copter pilot at the time. He got Cash's attention when he landed his helicopter in Cash's yard and gave him some more tapes. Cash then recorded Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down", which went was voted 1970's Song Of The Year by the Country Music Association. Kris was noted for his heavy boozing. XM was just playing Hendrix that was so good that I didn't check the screen until almost too late.

It said "Hendrix - 1983 Merman"

that had to be a remaster, fantastic sonic quality :bouncy:

to answer dome's question,canadian musicians actors etc make a fraction of what us artists make.the truly successful must make it in america first if they are to be taken seriously here.making a living in the arts here is incredibly difficult

THis got me thinking about him, so I checked out his site. He's aging gracefully and with character. It looks like maybe he got some work done, too. He's a very thoughtful artist. Check out some Q&A videos.

he generally shows up here once a year,or at the folk fest.second weekend in july annually and they get some great stuff.the workshops are fun but sometimes you have to miss one to catch another.the belfast cowpoke is coming in march.

They are two of my favorites. Clapton's appreciation for American blues artists is an integral part of his music history. He's like a kid in a candy store with the likes of B.B and the many other blues pioneers. Now get yourself a nice 30 watt stereo tube amp(Dynaco ST35 comes to mind) and take it to the next level. If you aren't a DIYer, you'll need a good tech for check ups. If you don't like it, they do retain their value. I just sold a Dynaco tube pre-amp for double what I paid for it last year.

Little Feat----Dixie Chicken & Time Loves A Hero---all of both, just too good to skip one song.

I saw them at Artpark this year in Lewiston, NY where the Tuesday concert is FREE! Great performance! Niagara River gorge is behind the outdoor stage. Fantastic Outdoor Theater for Western New York.

Also saw Peter Frampton there FREE!

Gwen Stefani "Sweet Escape" and SuperTramp "Even in the Quietest Moments" on deck.

I LOVE the MUSIC MACHINE. Sean Bonniwell is a great guy and still in wonderful voice, Pick up BONNIWELLS MUSIC MACHINE on Sundazed.

BTW The LEAVES did the best version of HEY JOE IMHO!

An oldie but a goodie--and, in my opinion, at least, one of the best--"Hey Joe," by The Music Machine, from "Turn On (The Music Machine)" which appeared, to the best of my recollection, in 1966-67. I've recorded it on a CD. Those guys were ahead of their time--black leather punks in an age of Flower Power. Their one big hit was "Talk Talk."

I dug out my old copy of "Happy Trails: yesterday and have been listening to it ever since. As I did when it first appeared, I cannot but marvel at how an entire album based on one Bo Diddly riff can sound so good. Other stuff of its era has not held up so well. With the possible exception of "Pride of Man," on The Messenger Service's first album, this is probably their best stuff to make it onto vinyl. They, like The Thirteenth Floor Elevators (the jug as a psychedelic instrument!) were supposed to be great live, but I never had a chance to actually see them perform.

I know Eric Burdon and the animals are the most well know groups to sing this, but I like it better by Frigid Pink. One thing has always puzzled me though,in the begining of Frigid Pink's the guitars are so loud I can't get them to sound right on any setup. I was wondering if it was just recorded too high in the studio. Has anyone ever heard this version? The acoustic guitars are awesome. DO YOU HAVE A COPY FOR SALE? WOULD LIKE TO HEAR IT. SAW ERIC 2 YR's AGO AT THE KESWICK THREATER NEAR PHILLY,STILL GREAT!
