2LP package combining Prologue and Ashes Are Burning into one package, and with the nice sounding mid 70s Capitol purple label mastering.

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/records 4/sh001-2.jpg

as I dropped the needle I wondered if Howe sings on this. Unfortunately he does on most tracks...
Yes, unfortunately Steve doesn't have the best singing voice. The playing and especially the songwriting on this album are outstanding however IMHO. After two or three listenings this LP really grew on me and I've played it a ton of times since then over the years.... ( I got a little more "used to" his voice as well as the songs growing on me after a couple listenings or so)

OH NO!!!!! Ronnie Montrose passed away yesterday?!! SH#T!!!!! This guy was a true musical genius. A lot of people think of him as a headbanger-but there was SOOOO much more to Ronnie. He was fluent in rock, jazz fusion, classical guitar, prog..... The album you have pictured "Paper Money" is my favorite album by the group MONTROSE. Some nice songs on that one---much better than some of their other outings IMHO. My favorite work by him is his work with Edgar and Johnny Winter and ESPECIALLY his first solo album "OPEN FIRE". I consider that album to be his masterpiece. Speaker Lab Fan, how do you find out about all these rockers who die? Are you on a rock obituary mailing list? :p

SLF--you're really up to date on this stuff--like when Van Vliet passed last winter. Glad you enjoyed the videos--must have been quite a tour to see live. I agree as far as Hagar goes--never been much of a fan..... By the way, what happened to your Sandy Denny avatar? What a talent she was--I even like her early work with the Strawbs........

The Sandy Denny avatar is in the rotation, I like to switch avatars but Sandy and her music are always close here, yes what a great peer she was in Fairport for Richard Thompson - those two talents no doubt pushed each other to reach further in their musical accomplishments.

one of the joys of parenting is when your kids turn out OKAY ....my son completed his Masters last year
and is planning his Doctoral education now. While waiting, he is selling vinyl online. I got him into records a couple of years back and he loves it. now goes out on CL ads, picks up collections and sells them 1 at a time ...
This care package from him showed up today ...

abt 1990 I ordered something from J&R and they included a sample cassette ....it had London Beat's "I've been thinking about You" , and we both really enjoyed it ....I remarked that I'd like to have that on vinyl someday.*

same deal with "The Apocalypse Now Sessions" and he's heard me play "Happy Trails" many times to where the vinyl is worn out ....I even got an ugly Ch1nese bootleg .....geeze he's a good guy. :D

* he's 30 now, so Chris would have been 9 when I said that ???

Nice selection! I've always considered this to be Ronnie's masterpiece--his best collection of songs and phenomenal performances IMHO. A very unique addition to his catalog as well...... Never would have guessed in the early 70's that Edgar Winter's "guitar slinger" had this much talent as an artist himself.....

so was letting iTunes play whatever it wanted and it found 23 different
"I put a spell on you's" ....one was really nice (so far) ...a guy I'd never heard of ...Tab Benoit.
anyway here's a Youtube link to that version

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeKkq1yUZ-A

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_Benoit

enjoy ?

LATER: wow...great versions from Queen Latifah , Nina Simone, Nick Cave and Manfred Mann
(the Marilyn Manson one sux) ..also a nice one from Jimmy Barnes (?) and from Jill West and the Blues Attack.
MORE: good ones from: The Druids of Stonehenge, David Gilmour, The C.A, Quintet,
Brian Ferry & Roxie Music,Bonnie Tyler and Audience.

The "Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings" version had too much horn.

Even later: the Middle Eastern Natacha Atlas variation is rather fun:

and the belly dance version: (even more fun)

Nice score! That second James Gang LP -- James Gang Rides Again-- is one of my favorites by the James Gang. Classic early Joe Walsh--some really great songs on that LP. I'm a Tull fan as well--Too Old To Rock & Roll is a solid effort by Tull IMHO. The title was inspired by what a critic said about their "Minstrel in the Gallery" LP (which featured a lot of acoustic compositions). BTW, they just released the sequel to Thick As A Brick -- called "Thick As A Brick II". Mine is on the way from Amazon--I ordered the deluxe version with bonus DVD including "making of" documentary and interviews, DVD audio , etc..... More info here:

According to Ian Anderson
"TAAB2
Whatever Happened To Gerald Bostock?
In 1972, I wrote and recorded the Jethro Tull Progressive Rock classic album Thick As A Brick (http://www.j-tull.com/discography/thickasabrick/index.html). The lyrics were credited at the time to the fictitious child character, Gerald Bostock, whose parents supposedly lied about his age. The record instantly became a number one Billboard Chart album and enjoyed considerable success in many countries of the world.
We then, somewhat dutifully, took the quaintly theatrical show on the road in the UK, USA and a few other countries. Since 1972, the album has never been performed in its entirety although a few minutes of the material have been a regular repertoire staple in both Tull and Ian Anderson solo shows over the years.
Now, scheduled for performance again in 2012, I will take the original album and this follow-up recording, TAAB2, to a theatre near you.
So, forty years on, what would Gerald Bostock – aged fifty in 2012 – be doing today? What might have befallen him?
The theme of this anniversary “part two” album is to examine the possible different paths that the precocious young schoolboy, Gerald Bostock, might have taken later in life and to create alter-ego characters whose song-section identities illustrate the hugely varied potential twists and turns of fate and opportunity. Not just for Gerald but to echo how our own lives develop, change direction and ultimately conclude through chance encounters and interventions, however tiny and insignificant they might seem at the time.
In the development of the piece, the divergences of life’s infinitely forked roads finally give way to an almost gravitational pull which results in convergence to, perhaps, a pre-ordained, karma-like conclusion.
As we baby-boomers look back on our own lives, we must often feel an occasional “what-if” moment. Might we, like Gerald, have become instead preacher, soldier, down-and-out, shopkeeper or finance tycoon?
And those of more tender years - the social media and internet generation - may choose to ponder well the myriad of chance possibilities ahead of them at every turn.....
Odd chap, life.....
If someone had suggested that I might release a Prog concept album in the year 2012, I would have thought him seriously, dangerously even, off his trolley. But that is precisely what happened. A few years ago, Mike Andrews and Royston Eldridge, two ex-Chrysalis Records gents pressed me to consider a follow-up to Thick As A Brick. I gave it some dutiful deliberation - for a couple of minutes - and politely declined. Nice idea, nice chaps but, after reflection, no-oooooo.
Then, in 2010, a re-aquaintance with seventies Prog Rock vocalist-turned-record exec Derek Shulman - yes, he of Gentle Giant fame - restarted the old refrain. Yes, but.... no, but, and finally - OK, I'll give it some more dutiful deliberation (four and a half minutes, this time) eventually produced, in February of 2011, the synopsis of the idea. Derek's enthusiasm and gauntlet-challenge plus two weeks of dedicated, fast and furious music and lyric writing combined to produce a flurry of material. And - blow me down with a Dodo's tail-feather - the whole thing was completed ready for scoring and arranging by the beginning of March. There were a couple of pieces prepared earlier which were bent into new shape and fitted into the scheme of things, so they too were popped into the bubbling saucepan.
It was a little daunting to consider the impact – or perhaps lack of – which this release might have on old and new fans alike but I eventually decided that I would embark on this for my own benefit and enjoyment rather than trying to please anyone else at all. To find the balance of interesting musicality and more accessible content too was not the main issue. The conceptual and heavily lyrical nature of the beast, however, might be out of place in the attention span-deficit world which we seem to occupy these days. But, having toured in 2010 and 2011 in Italy, Latin America, Australia and other countries where passions run high, I decided that maybe the world – or our little corners of it – was, in fact, ready for a bit of more substantial and weightier fare.
The era of professional media Prog-bashing seems to have given way to a more appreciative appraisal of the genre and newer bands such as Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree and Spock's Beard have possibly prompted a new and younger audience to re-examine the seventies originators' seminal albums too.
So, it's not such a cold and lonely place after all. The elements of Folk, Classical and Jazz Music are still to be found in today's more Rock-oriented Progressive Rock. You will certainly find them subtly present in TAAB2 but along with a rather more acoustic feel than many of our peers, past and present. Not the only flute in town but......
Actually, I played much more acoustic guitar than usual on this record having written most of the music on that instrument. But there are still sections conceived on the flute and sometimes – quite often, in fact – the lyric writing preceded all the melodies and harmonic structures. Starting with lyrics and then thinking of the music is not normally the way I work but it was here. A title, a few words or a verse or two and then the acoustic guitar was immediately to hand to conjure up a full song section out of the growing lyrics. Having a plan was important. Stories to tell made it all easier. The imagination-filled process of thinking how things might have turned out for the young and older Gerald kept me fascinated. Maybe you will be too. And maybe not.
Ah, well – you can always go and watch The X Factor and the Eurovision Song Contest.
Ian Anderson January 2012"

Love this Brand X album and their other albums as well. The band and arrangements are incredibly fluid and tight--really well written songs in a jazz/rock fusion vein. Gotta love the Monty Python/Michael Palin connection! The band I was playing in at the time was the opening act for them for a show in the early 90's here in upstate NY. By then they had become a "power trio"---John Goodsall was still their guitarist (and primary composer), and Percy Jones was still their bassist (as can be seen by the record label in your photo, Jones and Goodsall wrote much of "Do They Hurt" as well). They had a new drummer (Frank Katz) who was phenomenal--it was an amazing show. Goodsall had a midi guitar that triggered keyboards, synths, etc. that really filled in the sound nicely. Trivia about this "Do They Hurt" album, it was recorded at Startling Studios, which was located in Ringo Starr's countryside home (formerly John Lennon's home).....

Another nice haul--you've been finding some great stuff in your neck of the woods. That Pete Townshend "Scoop" album has some great material on it--amazing you got a sealed copy! Love the Fleetwood Mac live LP and some cool Moodies too. A lot of people don't know that the "Go Now" album by the Moody Blues that you purchased (their first album) features Denny Laine from Wings and is a pre-Justin Hayward Moody Blues album. Justin joined for their next LP--they got him from a classified ad (what luck--getting Justin Hayward from a classified ad)!

In regard of prices, I get my used records for about $1.00 for a 12" single as well as most LPs, with sometimes a hefty $3.00 for rarer discs. I moved to the suburbs (away from hip downtown Montreal) and I can say that perhaps one of the main thing I like with my new location is that used disc shop. They are at the receiving end of many clubs, and basements from retired peoples. Sometimes I can go thru boxes and boxes of records, listening to what I want and bring home dozen of new (to me) discs or stuff I was looking for. Same discs are $10.00 in Montreal's hip shops. I average around 40 discs per week these days. I don't buy to resale. Just personal enjoyment But I did find a $3.00 Mono Rolling Stone disc (their third album) that discogs pretends sell at $200.00 ;)

But if one looks for all the 1970s disco, 1980s new wave and pop as well as 1990s techno and dance, it's all there to be liberated from their crate... ;)

Great album! I missed this tour--first time I saw them was in 1974 -- Relayer tour with Pat Moraz. It was one of the first concerts I ever saw and was a killer show that blew me away... I really enjoy the Yessongs movie also--an incredible performance and a must on DVD if you've never seen it. Filmed at London's Rainbow Theatre in December 1972 and has pretty much the same songs as the album. "Leaving aside any questions regarding performance, musical choices etc. What is/are the best sounding LPs you have ever heard ?

FWIW let's vote on the best sounding LP ever!

Two candidates from my collection:

Charlie Byrd Charlie Byrd (Crystal Clear Records CCS 8002)
Bruce Coburn Dancing in The Dragon's Jaws (True North tn37)"

Great album! I missed this tour--first time I saw them was in 1974 -- Relayer tour with Pat Moraz. It was one of the first concerts I ever saw and was a killer show that blew me away... I really enjoy the Yessongs movie also--an incredible performance and a must on DVD if you've never seen it. Filmed at London's Rainbow Theatre in December 1972 and has pretty much the same songs as the album. Here's the link..... http://www.amazon.com/Yes-Yessongs-Steve-Howe/dp/6305076995/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1335706576&sr=1-1

Thanks for the note about the Yessongs movie! I'm all over that!

A recent $1 thrift find. The recording of a concert performed at Columbia University on May 9 and 10, 1961. notes on the tracks:

The Arel composition is completely electronic, with articulated signals over a continuous background texture. Halim El-Dabh's composition, an "electronic drama," has a text drawn from the epic of Layla and Majnun, and consists primarily of tape manipulated instrumental and vocal sounds. Ussachevsky's work has lyrics derived from the Enuma Elish creation myth, with chorus and electronic accompaniment. Babbitt's piece is composed entirely on the RCA Synthesizer. Davidovsky created a work manipulating sine wave, square wave, and white noise generators. Luening's composition combines solo violin with RCA Synthesizer sound followed by tape manipulation.

out to the flea market today, only picked up this "Street Survivors" ...the original cover released just before their plane accident ... it was reissued with the flames removed.

"The original pressing of the cover of Street Survivors had a photograph of the band standing in flames. The cover was changed to an alternate photo with an all-black background, out of respect for the deceased. Thirty years later, the original "flames" cover was restored, while the alternative cover serves as the back of the case. Lead singer Van Zant is wearing a t-shirt depicting Neil Young (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Young)'s album Tonight's the Night (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonight%27s_the_Night_%28Neil_Young_album%29) in both photographs."

Highly recommend you hunt down a copy of the mid-70s release Clannad In Concert ...
Wonderful early stuff of a somewhat more traditional nature than the later material, but still with the familial vocal harmonies that are such a joy to hear.

went down to CRM yesterday, the first time I've been skunked there :(

anyway, they have a lot of free publications by the door ....I picked up
Record Collector News and it had a good article on the Moody Blues ...

can be read online .... http://www.readoz.com/publication/read?i=1049287#page10

also, picked up ELMORE: Saving American music ...had an interesting trivia bit

Trivia (http://www.elmoremagazine.com/category/trivia)
ElmoreMagazine.com (http://www.elmoremagazine.com) | February 19th, 2012 by Elmore Magazine

In February, 1949, RCA Victor introduced the 45 RPM record. To distinguish between styles, these were color-coded, each using a different color plastic. Rhythm & blues records were cherry red, pop records were black, classical came in red, with blue, yellow, and green for other styles of music. The first set of 45s was sent in a group of seven, each representing one style of music.

"One of the biggest mistakes the music industry ever made was letting Tower Records fail.
Big records sell anywhere, but unlike Best Buy or Wal-mart, Tower insisted on a knowledgeable staff
who could recommend music. The industry spends hundreds of millions promoting records, and
bailing out Tower would have been cheap. Tower was responsible for 50% of the back catalogue sales
in the US -thats a lot of money." -Arnie Goodman

picked up GH's "Wonderwall Music" and BG's "Odessa" (red velvet cover) today.

I've been buying some speakers recently and had a need to create a small, portable playlist of demo tracks.
Ive got most of my music loaded in iTunes at home and nearly everything is in Apple lossless format on my system. So, I created a demo tracks playlist in iTunes that I can load to my iphone or ipod and take with me. I've got a cable with a pair of RCA connectors on the end so I can feed audio into their gear.

I don't always play every track all the way through - some tracks have a specific quirk - like a bass line that starts the song, and that's all I need to hear to compare how it sounds. Like Steely Dan's Cousin Dupree - I don't like the lyrics, but that bass line is a fantastic. Same thing with the intro to "In A Big Country" those crisp techno drums at the beginning tell me a lot about how a speaker handles bass. I don't need to let it play into the lyrics.

This is NOT an exhaustive list, of course, but if I have these tracks handy,
I can try a piece here and there and have an idea how a pair of speakers (or a system) sounds.

Some are a little obscure, and I get raised eyebrows when I play Sinatra -
but its such a well recorded song ... and its Frank!

Anyway - here is the list - (song title - Artist - Album)

One For My Baby - Frank Sinatra - Songs for Only the Lonely

Long Distance - Muddy Waters - Muddy Waters, Folk Singer

Bird's Lament - Moondog (the older, quicker version from his early recordings)

The Cisco Kid - War - The World is a Ghetto

Easy Money - King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic

Oh the Warm Feeling - Van Morrison - No Guru, No Method, No Teacher (usually just the instrumental part at the beginning)

Pick up the Pieces - AWB - Average White Band

Inca Roads - Frank Zappa & the Mothers - One Size Fits All (bits here and there)

Assault and Battery part 1 - Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time

Amelia & Hejira - Joni Mitchell - Hejira

Heat Of The Moment - Asia - Asia

In a Big Country - Big Country - The Crossing (just the opening drums)

Robber Dub - Clash - Super Black Market Clash

Romantique - Yo Yo Ma & Claude Bolling - Suite for Cello & Jazz Piano Trio

Circle in the Sand - Belinda Carlisle - Heaven on Earth

Orpheus - David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive

Streets of Bakersfield - Dwight Yokum & Buck Owens - Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room (Work out the mid & tweeters!)

She's Already made up Her Mind - Lyle Lovette - Joshua Judges Ruth

Tears Don't care Who Cries Them - k.d.lang - Shadowland

Time After Time - Everything but the Girl - Acoustic

This House - Janis Ian - Breaking Silence

One Time - King Crimson - B'Boom: Live in Argentina

Steam - Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live

One of Us - Joan Osbourne - Relish

Frim Fram Sauce - Diana Krall - All for You: Dedicated to Nat King Cole

Wade in the Water - Eva Cassidy - Songbird

Big Cat - Afro Celt Sound System - Vol 2: Release

Teardrop - Massive Attack - Mezzanine (aka, the theme to House, M.D.)

Obsidian - Banco de Gaia - Igezeh

Harder Better Faster Stronger - Daft Punk - Discovery
(any of the above 3 gives a good idea of techno drums and sharp attacks)

Thanks to You - Boz Scaggs - Dig

Heartattack and Vine - John Hammond - Wicked Grin (John Waits "covers")

Extended theme from Angel - Darling Violetta - Unofficial Soundtrack -

Passenger Fever - Iggy Pop and Peggy Lee - Mashed

Ain't Goin' to Goa - Alabama 3 - Hits and Exit Wounds (just funny)

Benicia (for Paul Canales) - John Zorn - Alhambra Love Songs

Border Reiver - Mark Knopfler - Get Lucky

inspired by a piece heard on the NPR (http://www.wbur.org/npr/150971914/james-burton-the-teen-who-invented-american-guitar) Fresh Air broadcast today on James Burton. He was called in to play dobro on A Child's Claim To Fame. Also a great record to start off a (US) holiday weekend.

Good idea to have a playlist/source for auditioning, listening for the specifics from gear and speakers. Nice list, I definitely see the reason to choose many of these well produced tracks. Hejira and Amelia == Jaco Pastorius, bass. :applaud:
