with an experimental microphone placement technique called binaural recording, apparently it's only really noticeable when listening through headphones. I'm not hearing anything unique about the recording listening through speakers, although the studio tracks as sound nice as expected since the mastering is Sterling Ted Jensen.
Binaural is for headphones. Recorded with a dummy head mike, the soundstage/imaging on headphones is incredibly accurate and convincing. There are way too few of these recordings since the early stereo era to satisfy we headphone listeners. In those days "Binaural" was often seen on LP covers.



Here's a 60's psych band I've always really liked. Their first/self titled LP "GUN" in particular is a timeless classic IMHO.

This album has been with me since it came out. A favorite of mine too.

If you want to look for an unpopular and rare offering from the late Sixties, find Cro Magnon. Not sure about the spelling. Haven't seen it since 1970. A friend and I liked it, everyone else we knew hated it.

GREAT SCORE! Classic Roxy, and that Petty album is a classic with some of his better songs IMHO--I have that one on vinyl too. Here are a couple of my favorites from that LP.....

I really think Petty is underrated by many. Great American rock and roll, tight band, melodic songs with hooks--there's a reason George Harrison, Rick Rubin, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, etc. all worked with him...(couldn't find a good recording of "Finding Out" on Youtube--another classic from that Petty LP)....

An HPB pickup this week. Antilles was the US sister label for Island. includes tracks by nick drake, fripp & eno, steve winwood, tim hardin, grimms, white noise, june tabor, dave swarbrick, phil manzera. I get a kick out of the 25 cents printed on the record label - those samplers were basically give-aways. The Grimms include Neil Innes from Monty Python and members of the Bonzo Dog Band.

At the start of their appearance at the Apollo Theater, the unidentified host who introduced them chided their evident late arrival saying (slightly off mic):

"Y'know, every time we used to go outta town for them jive jobs they give us, they always say 'black folks: late, can't be on time,' now look at the White Trash!" (chuckle)

The comment was met with laughter from the audience. After the introduction, the audience again broke out into sporadic laughter, possibly not expecting much from the band as it consisted of all white musicians, but their doubts were quickly dispelled when the band launched into "Cool Fool", a funky R&B song.

This snippet appears on the original vinyl release at the beginning of Side 4.

In the past couple of months I have snapped up at least 3 Brookmeyer LPs, the first I've heard of Brookmeyer's stuff (but not of Jim Hall who accompanies on guitar on the other two LPs). He started out playing in Gerry Mulligan's Quartet in the early 50s. Great stuff.

Just about anything he touches turns to gold (musically, not necessarily sales-wise!). He's produced amazing LP's by so many bands--Badfinger, the Tubes, Rick Derringer, Cheap Trick to name just a very few. I own his entire catalog (34 LP's including his Utopia albums).... "We're An American Band" by GFR has Todd's production help. The guy was busy with his own and other projects from the mid 60s on, I continue to find his name on all kinds of records. In the case of the Hillage record, I'm sure it was a collaboration with Hillage bringing his Caterbury scene and Gong background, and with the Utopia band playng on the record. I bet Todd has some stories, he should write a book. He is mentioned a few times in Patti Smith's book, "Just Kids".

one of the inner sleeve pictures includes a look at TONTO, a large handbuilt polyphonic synthesiser, stands for "The Original New Timbral Orchestra", and was used on this album. produced and engineered by Malcolm Cecil, of TONTO's Expanding Headband and creator of the TONTO synthesizer. Guitar tracks were recorded on 7/7/77 "to give the record mystical relevance". :cool:

This is a second copy, I'd forgotten how dynamic and nicely recorded this prog rock record is. a 50cent pickup at HPB last week.

I agree, the Kinks were very inflluential and they were easily responsible for destroying as many transistor radio speakers ("You Really Got Me"; "All Day and All Of The Night") here in the States as the Stones (Satisfaction, Get Off My Cloud, 19th Nervous Breakdown) and the Lads from Liverpool (uh, every 45 they released starting in 1963...)

My son in Chicago got his Masters dissertation completed/submitted
and finally has time for enjoying life a bit ...since he got the L-56's a couple of
months ago, he's been missing his vinyl collection ....so last weekend he snagged
an SL-1200 mk1 and emailed me a list of LP's that he's longing for...
He's a big CLASH fan and remembered that I'd bought the 12 in. Rock the Casbah
vinyl for him a while ago ....have to admit that I'd never played it ...tho remember
that it had the widest grooves seen in my memory.
Decided to record it before sending it off .... WOW :D sounds wonderful :applaud: ... the
minidisk dub is the best that I've ever heard "RTC" sound ...:bouncy:

Great stuff by the Kinks and the Who in multiple posts here lately. Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy is probably my favorite 60's Who collection--tons of great songs like The Seeker, I Can See For Miles, Anyway, Anyhow.... etc.-- not a dud on the album! The Kinks are another band with real longevity--so many great Kinks albums from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's....Here are a very few of my favorites:

A shame Dave Davies had a stroke several years ago--that delayed or ended hopes of a reunion. Even though the Davies brothers don't get along, I still hope for a reunion (if Dave sufficiently recovers for a tour)..... In the meantime, Ray Davies is touring again in October and November this year and still writing and recording great songs--he includes a healthy dose of Kinks Klassics in his live shows to this day.... Great early Yes LP (their second album). Funny thing about this album is that even though Steve Howe is pictured on the cover--he doesn't appear anywhere on the album. Peter Banks, the original Yes guitarist, is on this LP but the cover was shot after the album was recorded (and after Peter Banks had been fired). Peter, by the way, is a great guitarist/songwriter in his own rite. Anyone ever heard of Peter Banks' band FLASH?

A $1 pickup a few weeks ago. This pressing includes "Watford Gap", last song on side 1. from the wiki write-up...

Originally the album contained the song "Watford Gap" which contained somewhat disparaging lyrics "...concerning the Watford Gap service station, a motorway service area situated between junctions 16 and 17 of the M1 Motorway, near Watford Gap, in Northamptonshire, England". "Watford Gap, Watford Gap, a plate of grease and a load of crap" sang Harper.[2]

"Subsequent pressings omitted the song at the behest of an EMI board member who was (also) a non-executive director of Blue Boar (the owners of the service station)..."

Frank Zappa--What can I say...... I think he will be remembered hundreds of years from now as one of the great musical geniuses of the 20th century.

I have a lot of Zappa and MOI records and I appreciate the music for the clever and innovative playing and amazing arrangements but the stuff doesn't stick for me, there's something missing. Ok I get that life is weird and bizzarre and worthy of parody and tasteless, sarcastic lyrics and music, maybe I don't have enough exposure but I think I'm missing if he had anything (else) to say? maybe thats the point and I missing it, oh well.

Actually, I usually find SLF's comments to be very insightful and even in this case they touch on several poignant aspects of Frank's music. He mentions "clever and innovative playing", "amazing arrangements", and says that maybe he doesn't have enough exposure but he thinks he's "missing if he had anything (else) to say? maybe thats the point and I missing it, oh well." I think if SpeakerLabFan did have more exposure as he mentions (to certain Zappa LP's in particular), he'd be a real fan--especially if he likes Flo and Eddie "Illegal, Immoral, and Fattening" (a very Zappa influenced/Zappaesque LP). I like that he's got an open mind and says he may just need more exposure and likes the "clever and innovative playing, amazing arrangements". I'd be the first to say that Frank's music covers a wide spectrum and some albums are right up my alley, and some I rarely listen to. That's part of his genius IMHO. For example, I may not listen to much country music, but Frank could write and play country and actually do justice to it. How many artists do you listen to that can do rock, jazz, classical, country, fusion, etc. When I say he was a musical genius, that's part of what I mean. (not to mention his amazing writing and arranging and playing skills). And it just so happens, some of those styles I like and IMHO he does them quite well. Think of some of the artists who's rock careers really took off thanks to playing with Frank. He introduced artists like Jean Luc Ponty, Chester Thompson, George Duke, etc. to the masses/rock community--he could smell talent a mile away (and they obviously appreciated his talent enough to join his band).

Personally, I'm just not of the mindset to say that what someone else listens to here on this forum is a waste of time as you say about Zappa, Seawolf. I would never say that bands that Seawolf posts about like the Bee Gees and Billy Idol are a waste of time (some of their stuff wasn't bad--I try to keep an open mind to all styles of music and believe music appreciation is in the ear of the beholder and never call music that someone else likes a waste of time or categorize it/belittle it as "cute"/worthy of "one play only"). If you prefer the Bee Gees and Billy Idol to Zappa, more power to you and I won't call them a waste of time and I also won't say that you obviously need to buy some Q-Tips or some real speakers (kidding). No, I won't stoop to that level ;) I just don't see the merit or need in saying that music someone else on this forum likes is a waste of time "there's just too much good stuff out there to waste my listening time on Z" Seawolf, I know you've had some confrontations on your "Greatest ALBUM ever??" thread but I'm hoping that kind of thing won't creep into this thread. I am not confrontational by nature, but I will reply/stand up for an artist that someone on this forum likes being called things like a waste of time, cute one play only--that is confrontational and uncalled for.

Yes, Zappa parodied cultures, lifestyles, and musical styles, etc. like no one else could. That was only a small part of his genius--drawing attention to the ridiculous side of life (and anyone who doesn't see that there is a huge ridiculous side to life in these times should probably read the paper, turn on the t.v. or buy some glasses and look out the window). I'm sure you see that Seawolf. Please keep in mind that--no other musical artist has ever addressed that (long neglected in the music world) side of life like Zappa could-- before you belittle him or call his art a waste of time. I don't listen to Zappa for his lyrics anyways (although I often find them funny and insightful), I listen to his music for the songwriting and melodies and "innovative playing and amazing arrangements" to quote SLF. If you had ever seen him live (not live on tape--a very different experience), you may have been blown away by his performance/band/songs. If you never saw him live, you really missed out because that is an area where he really shined brightly. I know he's no Billy Idol or Barry Gibb, but oh well.....

Agreed--something I forgot to mention--he was way ahead of his time musically and lyrically--another aspect of his genius. His lyrics poked fun at things like politicians' sex scandals/double standards as well as hippy lifestyles/philosophy back in the mid sixties--nothing, not even his (hippy) fans were out of bounds for his wit.....

I have not heard them all, but the Zappa project closest to my Alexis de Tocqueville eye on our culture heart is An Evening With Wild Man Fischer.

When I saw Frank and The Mothers live, and spoke to him afterword, it was obvious he was operating musically and culturally light years beyond what most of pop music was about at the time, or today. He was the next best thing to Milton Babbitt crossed with Nabokov.

I admit that Babbitt is the one I would be most likely to play at this point, but I have never had the Fischer double album leave my consciousness, even forty-three years later. "The Leaves Are Falling" goes through my head a lot. Almost as often as "Books of Moses" and "Weighted Down" by Skip Spence. If I were to play all of this on my stereo, I would have to work "I Heard Her Call My Name" and perhaps "Sister Ray" into the mix somewhere. Along with heavy Jazz, Glenn Gould, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Pretenders II and some Santana, this set would involve most of the most powerful music I have ever heard.

To be fair, there are hundreds of albums/CDs in the hunt, but these works are a cut above. With heavy Jazz, there may be thousands of works in this category for me. I would listen to all of this before playing even one Classic Rock track, but that is the mind of "Wild Man" Clark.

RAM is one of my all time favorite Beatles solo LP's. I was at my local record store several years ago and the guy I deal with there recommended the 24 karat gold remastered RAM CD. He said "the sound quality will knock your socks off". He's a real vinyl aficionado (as I am) so I was surprised to hear him rave about this CD. I bought it, and was blown away by this recording. After hearing the first song, I studied the CD info and learned it was "Remastered for CD by Steve Hoffman"..."The original unequalized two-track master mixes were used in the making of this compact disc". I'm so used to CD's often times sounding inferior to vinyl recordings of the same album, I confess that I was surprised that this CD does sound substantially better than either of my two (mint) vinyl copies of RAM. Highly recommended----Steve Hoffman is a wizard in my book.......

Debut record; a garage sale find last month. The printed lyrics for "Turn A Deaf Ear" includes a reference to Steve McQueen which is changed to Robin Hood in the actual song, I wonder what is the story behind that. Nothing on wikipedia about that but a couple of interesting tidbits...


The title of the seventh track, "Alan in the River With Flowers", is a parody of The Beatles' song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and was given its original title of "Float Me Down The River" on the American version. The "flatulette" was actually one of the band members blowing raspberries during the instrumental break in "Down".

The concert was great as always with Ferry. The sound was one of the best I heard at the large places as Belgrade Arena. There's only two things that bug a little. There was only 5.000 to 6.000 people in the hall capacity of over 20.000. Last couple of times they played at smaller venues and that was much better.
Second thing is some healt issues Bryan had lately and it seems he's not fully recover. So they made 20 minutes pause in the middle of the show. Anyway the band was great and fix all troubles. Bryan even appeared on a popular show at some local TV station and that was great too.

comparing this recent acquisition (from a pile of free records) with another copy. This one is excellent and is an upgrade over the VG+ copy. Both have the LH/RL stampers. This one had a picture of the band with the inner sleeve; the other copy had the 12 page booklet with lyrics.

That shouldn't even matter - again, you are not playing videos directly -
Getting a screencap picture and a link to a video URL shouldn't use any real bandwidth at all ...

If anything, the delay is more likely due to all these album cover pictures getting loaded from 3rd party websites
(flicker, photobucket and that kind of thing) - I don't even see most of them through the firewall at work.

thanx for the enlightened reply ....but if you read a couple of posts back, I am near a WIRELESS ROUTER, NOT 3G , also you may note that I said only this thread and Ashlies load slow....and you don't load the whole thread when reading it, so size of thread really makes no difference ...it loads 1 page at a time.

Well then maybe the issue is local. I run an iPhone and iPad here on wireless, even on 3G they load these threads fast. Each page will load as a whole and with the amount a graphics things can get slow. Try a hard connection to your router and double check the speed.

Yes, that is John Goodsall's autograph on my copy of "Moroccan Roll". A band I used to play in was fortunate enough to open up for Brand X back in the 90's......

Sundazed is a great label! They have re-issued some phenomenal and often obscure titles and do a great job mastering/remastering--the sound quality on their releases is generally excellent. I (re) bought John Entwistle's first two albums on SUNDAZED a while back and the remastered sound quality is fantastic--the SUNDAZED remastered CD version blows away the sound quality of my (mint) LP version (which is a pleasant surprise for me--for a CD to sound better than the original vinyl version)...... Pink Floyd week this week on Jimmy Fallon's show. NBC weeknights at 12:35 am. Every night this week a different band will perform a Pink Floyd cover to celebrate Pink Floyd releasing the remastered version of their entire musical catalog (studio albums only). Last night, Nick Mason was a guest on the show and the Shins did a cover of "Breathe" (not a bad rendition either---a better version than I thought the Shins would be able to pull off).... I'm more psyched about tonight's upcoming show--it will be the Foo Fighters doing a Pink Floyd cover with ROGER WATERS SITTING IN WITH THE FOO FIGHTERS!

Yes, that's a good one - that entire record is GREAT. Psychedelic rock with country, folk and raga thrown in. Love the sitar and the blues rock vocals from Mariska Veres (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariska_Veres) - described in the All Music review "like a gypsy incarnation of Grace Slick" (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/grace-slick-p5458). Psychedelic rock with country, folk and raga thrown in. I have the 1969 US issue, the european release was titled "At Home" on Pink Elephant. It's definitely worth pursuing if there has been a Sundazed or other reissue.

a terrific sounding early 70s A&M recording, with really nice low frequencies from the bass and drums. The first solo record from Roberts after the breakup of the Flying Burrito Brothers. with David Crosby, Dallas Taylor, Marc Benno, Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, and Byron Berline. One of a few Roberts' records that I ran across in the thrift bins yesterday. The cover suffers from ringwear, but the LP is excellent after vacuum clean and rinse cycles on the VPI 16.5 RCM.

Such a great record. if you listen carefully you can hear the light bulb going on in Brian Wilson's head the first time he heard this record. I purchased this copy new back in the mid 70s. It kicks the US copy to the curb, although the US track list has always seemed like the real record, since that record has the track order and folk-rock flavor that I first heard and played to death in the 60s.

American singer-songwriter who wrote a number of great pop and folk rock songs including "Don't Doubt Yourself Babe" which was on The Byrds debut. She wrote songs with Jimmy Page in the mid 60s, and Randy Newman. A nice cover of "Night And Day" here. It's not hard to see or hear why Page (and Elvis) were smitten by her.

I never cease to be amazed at some of the phenomenal LP's that are posted here. Alice Cooper is a very under-rated artist IMHO. A lot of people think of him as that heavy metal/hard rock guy of the 90's and this last decade. Many don't realize (or remember) his work in the 60's (they were a "psychedelic" band in the 60's) and 70's with his original band was unbelievably well written and performed classic rock and roll with all the melodic hooks and intricate arrangements you could ever want (and those "glory days" albums were all produced by genius producer Bob Ezrin)..... There are so many great songs on this "Love It To Death" LP that you posted--besides his first hit "Eighteen". Second Coming, Ballad of Dwight Fry, Caught In A Dream--I could list the whole album! Here are some of my favorites by Alice's original band.

A lot of people aren't aware that Alice Cooper was a band and not a solo artist in the 60's and first half of the 70's (before the original band and Alice parted ways)--those "glory days" albums were co-written and arranged by the band. When the band broke up, his music went way downhill IMHO.......

Some music from Alice's original band for those who haven't heard much of this stuff--these guys were fantastic--PLAY IT LOUD!!!

It's too bad that a live album wasn't issued before 1974. I saw them for the Billion Dollar Babies tour in 1973, great show. This has some of the great early material but it's not the same band by 1977 when this was recorded in Las Vegas. A dollar bin find from last month.

It's too bad that a live album wasn't issued before 1974. I saw them for the Billion Dollar Babies tour in 1973, great show. This has some of the great early material but it's not the same band by 1977 when this was recorded in Las Vegas. A dollar bin find from last month.
agree, pre '74 up to Billion Dollar Babies the band was about some very formidable and tasty rock. Later on it's theatrics and AC's battle with alcoholism.

Yeah, the later band, while some may argue were more technically skilled on their instruments, just didn't play with the "passion" that the original band did, not to mention, didn't co-write phenomenal songs like the original band did.

I wish I had seen Alice back in the glory days--Billion Dollar Babies era must have been a phenomenal tour! Would have been great to release a live album back then. Fortunately, at the time there was a theatrical release of the tour (in theaters) called "Good To See You Again" which is a full length concert film of the "Billion Dollar Babies" tour. The music/musicianship, song selection, theatrics, high level energy performance, is stellar IMHO for this concert film. Only possible downside is on some of the songs they don't show the band as much as they show Alice's theatrics, but that's not surprising considering how controversial/outlandish their live show was considered back then. It was finally re-issued by Shout Factory/Eagle Vision a few years ago--highly recommended. Even if you're not a fan of rock concert DVD's, just turn off your TV and it makes an incredible live album of what was probably one of Alice's best tours......

I spotted a Steve Hoffman mastered copy of this title on the S&P label the other day, so I wanted to pull out my copy for a listen. It's a nice warm early 70s recording, lots of bass. a great title too, with Graham Nash, George Harrison (credited as "son of Harry"), Jim Keltner, Carl Radle, Greg Reeves, even Stevie Wonder on one track, along with other uncredited greats. The radio station sticker on the front cover has been on there since April 17, 1976 according to the date stamp and it's not coming off without taking the cover with it. :(

I agree, and I think the same can be said of his fellow bandmate in Traffic, Steve Winwood - maybe less obsurity for Winwood but he deserves more too. Mason might have fared better if he hadn't kept quitting and re-joining Traffic? An interesting bit on wikipedia:
