walked in at 5PM opening with a pocket full of $1's , grabbed fast b4 it filled with ooglers and was out by 6:15 ..when you could no longer walk around

I like the John Barry - Bond soundtracks ...Love , Peace & Happiness is a double (most expensive that I bought @$2) ...3 sides bad, but the only cut that I wanted was pristine...the title song is a whole side ...LP&H is very much in the psychedelic vein of THCT.;)

I swapped a pair of big Altec Valencia speakers into the rig this afternoon, this record sounds especially nice, Paul's bass thunders on the bottom end. I wonder if it sounds great on the Altecs because the Beatles studio monitors were Altec 605s?

Nice grabs! did you see any of the regulars there? I wish it wasn't a 3 hour drive for me, or I'd have been there.

I dig the Nancy Sinatra titles especially when Lee Hazlewood produced, played and provided songs on them. The Zepp is surely a killer grab for a buck if the LP plays well, the cover isn't as important as the program material. I don't have that Szabo record but if it's like his other early titles, it's very tasty. :applaud:

well I was out of there by 6:15 and it was open till 9 , so mebbe missed them....was interesting that approx 80 percent of the buyers were Portland Hipsters of 30 or under.
(a contributing factor was that it was held on Hawthorne , which is Hipster Mecca for this area.)

I like Nancy too , picked up the "You Only Live Twice" ST at the January Eugene show and its gotten multi plays ...always thought that she & Lee on "Some Velvet Morning" was rather different and unique.

"The catchy single, "One Toke Over the Line", peaked at #10 (#5 in Canada), garnering notice from Spiro Agnew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiro_Agnew) for what he saw as its subversiveness. Actually, "Acquiring The Taste" was Gentle Giant's second album. Their first was a self titled album "Gentle Giant" with a cover that looks like the U.S. cover of Three Friends (close-up of the Giant's face). To my knowledge, it has never been released in the U.S. There are some nice tracks on it but it's not one of their best efforts IMHO. My two faves are More and Ummagumma, both very early but with Gilmour (after Syd but before Roger Waters took over and steered the band to art/concept rock :snore: ). Still, I enjoy everything Gilmour plays and sings anyway. More is a soundtrack so it doesn't resemble anything else they have done. I like it the best.

Premiata Forneria Marconi (otherwise known as PFM). Italian band founded in 1970 -- still recording and performing live today. Their first couple of albums (and some of their more recent albums) had Italian lyrics, but they were signed by Greg Lake to the Manticore Label in 1973 and had several of their subsequent albums with English lyrics written by Pete Sinfield (lyricist for ELP and King Crimson). Their music is a fusion of Rock, Jazz, Classical, Opera--amazing sound and unbelievably proficient on their instruments. Highly recommended!

Canadian band from Toronto called FM (not to be confused with PFM). Their first album "Black Noise" was fairly popular in the late 70's and is the only one of their albums that is available on CD. Great power trio lineup -- Cameron Hawkins Keyboards and Vocals, Martin Deller Drums, Ben Mink (much later became the producer for K.D. Lang--don't hold it against him!) Electric and Acoustic Mandolin (sounds like guitar), Violin, Vocals. He replaced original member Nash the Slash...... Great prog rock -- especially their first three albums. CITY OF FEAR (1980) is their third album on Passport Records....

Inspired by voice of theatr. Leon Russell in a seriously weird psychedelic outing with Marc Benno. I have the original 1968 issue with the toilet roll on the cover and the 70s reissue also on the Smash label with Russell and Benno on the cover, both are unipak-style gatefold covers. I also have their 1971 follow-up, Asylum Choir II.

ASYLUM CHOIR Leon Russel and Marc Benno 1968 Psychedelic Rock--phenomenal album if you like 60's psychedelia!

Every once in a while I get in the mood to listen to something besides music on my Model 19's. For those of you who remember the 60's, these guys were pioneers/greats IMHO, you could even say (although not sure how accurate you'd be) they were the Seinfelds of the 60's. My older brother had pretty much all of the 60's Smothers Brothers and Cosby LP's among other cool comedy stuff from that era which I have inherited (he's still very much alive, but doesn't use his turntable anymore--poor guy!). I have the best memories of being a little kid listening to Bill Cosby talking about smearing jello on the floor, etc! There's something about the 60's (maybe just because that's when I was born) that seems so innocent and uncomplicated......

The Who - Odds & Sods
(1974, Track/MCA)
The Who/Townshend are so good that this even this collection of oddities and leftovers is a blast. Little Billy is awesome.

Great pick! The Who are one of my all time favorites--I consider albums like Quadrophenia, Who's Next, By Numbers, Live at Leeds, etc. to be masterpieces. I couldn't agree more about "Odds and Sods". The Who's "leftovers" on this LP are better than most bands' main courses! They had some great solo outings as well. Pete Townshend had so many great LP's--I sometimes feel that many people over look John Entwistle's solo stuff---much of which was excellent IMHO. These are my two personal favorites by The Ox (RIP)

Speaking of solo albums I dug this one out today--hadn't heard it in a while. I've been a fan of Edgar and Johnny Winter since the 70's. I've seen them live on multiple occasions. Albums like White Trash, They Only Come Out At Night, Second Winter, Saints and Sinners, to name just a very few are permanently etched into my memory. Ronnie was a great contributor to some fine albums by Edgar and Johnny, but at the risk of stirring up controversy, I'll admit I'm not a big fan of many of the Montrose albums (admittedly, I haven't heard them all). However, this album (a solo album, not a Montrose album) was like a breath of fresh air to me compared to some of his other stuff. I know people worship some of those Montrose albums, so I stress this is only my opinion--I know there are some worthwhile songs on those albums, but I was never knocked out by the albums as a whole. This album, while still not the most consistent album in the world, had some real gems--and some of his best songs in my opinion. Ironically, many fans of the band Montrose, don't like this solo album as it is a departure for him--an equally valid opinion of course.
If you've never heard the album, there are several nice cuts, but I'd suggest checking out these two cuts first if you want to hear a couple of my personal favorites (but not necessarily the best two cuts on the LP). If you click on the yahoo link below, on the bottom half of the web-page that it directs you to, you can click the "PLAY" button for "No Beginning, No End" and "My Little Mystery" if you want to hear something different by Ronnie Montrose (the songs play in their entirety on the website)......

Electrified obscure Texas biker hippie band; psychedelic blues boogie with organ & guitar. Unipak gatefold with a cool Alice in Wonderland drawing on the inner gatefold. Not a lot of information on this band, found this description:

Smoke is best described as the Grateful Dead's backwoods cousins after sitting at the feet of the Maharishi. Led by 300 pound Brother John Orvis, a man a spiritually gentle as he was physically imposing, the band made its way up and down the Pacific coast, singing about peace, love, and self realization.

Nice find! I own a few of Family's LPs. This is one of their more interesting outings to me in that it features John Wetton before he joined up with Uriah Heep/King Crimson etc. He lends some nice vocals to Spanish Tide (one of the albums highlights IMHO).... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js_ATJYEerc

Wow--I haven't seen the Natural Gas album in quite a while. They should win the award for most unknown "supergroup". Jerry Shirley (ex Humble Pie), Mark Clarke (ex Colloseum, Uriah Heep), Joey Molland (ex-Badfinger), produced by Felix Pappalardi (former member of Mountain, produced Cream, etc). I love this album. Joey wrote some great songs for it that sound as good to me as his work with Badfinger. His composition "Christmas Song" from the Natural Gas LP is a timeless classic IMHO

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/records%204/je001.jpg

recorded November 1972, some pretty lame Sha Na Na-style covers of classic 50's rock n' roll songs plus originals. a solo version of Entwistle's "My Wife" leads off side 2. interesting to have as an Entwistle compleatist, but disappointing otherwise.
Yeah, this one was a real dud as far as I'm concerned. Hard to believe someone who recorded such amazing albums as Whistle Rhymes and Smash Your Head Against the Wall also recorded two duds (IMO) like this one and Mad Dog (which I didn't much care for either).....

an all time fav

I agree, one of mine too along with their other two early records - Da Capo and Forever Changes - FC would be in my stack if I could only choose 5 records. Arthur Lee composed some interesting music and lyrics which don't sound dated at all to my ears. sublime.

Family - Fearless

Family's album "Bandstand" has some nice tracks as well--their albums were always kind of "inconsistent", but often had some nice tracks like "My Friend the Sun" with Wetton lending some nice harmonies..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQPqiXLaqGE

Thanks. I recognized Wetton but had not placed him with Uriah Heep and King Crimson. I enjoyed this record - great progressive rock.

Just saw the Amazon ad for the 40th Anniversary Edition of Caravan's Land of the Grey & Pink ...

what a big silly grin of a prog album!

BTW - if you are in the US and you are interested, its cheaper to order via Amazon Uk for 20 some bucks (£13.91) than to pay 30 some bucks to Amazon US ...

Harvey Mandel on guitar. This is a definite change from the Love albums of the 60s; here Arthur Lee goes for the 70s soul sound, and he channels Otis Redding and Jimi at times, but the ironic pop lyrics float in and out, i.e. "Which Witch Is Which". it's going to take some getting used to but it's good to have.

Side 2 has one track: Revelation which runs 18:57. There's an interesting note about it on wiki:

The album's second half is a single track, notable for being among the very first rock songs to take up an entire LP side (Bob Dylan's "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" from Blonde on Blonde predated it by a few months, and Frank Zappa's "The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet" suite, on the Freak Out! album, followed Dylan's by just over a month). The 19-minute jam, entitled "Revelation" began life as a live showcase for the group. Some sources claim it evolved out of their interpretation of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning", yet its original title was "John Lee Hooker." The song/jam bears a resemblance to the Rolling Stones' "Goin' Home," recorded at the same studio (RCA) and released earlier in the year, on Aftermath. Arthur Lee is quoted on the back cover of Rhino's 1980 LP compilation "Best of Love":
The song "Revelation" was a long jam we did so the musicians could express themselves. The Rolling Stones saw us play at the Brave New World, and they recorded a long song on their next album. After our album came out, I got the blame for copying them!

a jazz guitar performer lost to heroin addiction/heart failure at age 32 in 1990. 1985, she won the ‘Guitarist Of The Year’ award in DownBeat Jazz Magazine’s international poll. interview quote: "I may look like a nice Jewish girl from New Jersey, but inside I’m a 50-year-old, heavyset black man with a big thumb, like Wes Montgomery." Her playing and compositions here are really nice, very intricate picking but with a mellow expressive tone similar to Wes Montgomery's sound. A thrift find this week.

I've always been a fan of
"The Dog, the dog, he's at it again"

racy stuff, but such a great melody

With classic lyrics like this:

Oh-o Lonely girl, would you like a sweet to eat?
I've got something that I'd like you to hold
And my brother will tell you that it's good for your cold
So, there, surely there is nothing wrong
Take my hand and we'll try to make a stand
For all censorship, decency, all night long

You're naive if you really do believe
That the world is so full of sin
Never look back on the things that you lack
When you're in
My mother said that I should stay out of bed
But I know that I like it in there
Legs and thighs, hellos and goodbyes
It's all there

Oh my oh

(Suck a sugar, dandy, rock'n'roll
Lick a-licking lozenge cures the soul)

Here is my cure for colds
And here is my cure for measles
When you've tried those
If you've infected your toes
Well you're surely in luck, you'll get a stunning good show
So if you come with me
We'll try to clean the inside out
This filthy old world is such a beautiful girl
And you must have a sweet
I'm sure it's good for your feet

You're naive if you really do believe
That the world is so full of sin
Never look back on the things that you lack
When you're in
My mother said that I should stay out of bed
But I know that I like it in there
Legs and thighs, hellos and goodbyes
It's all there

Oh, medicine gone
It's coming on strong
It's coming on and on and on and on

Yep, them Canterbury brits were really something!

Yes, nice cover of Light My Fire on Streetnoise. They also cover Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, and "All Blues" by Miles Davis. I bet you'll enjoy that RP record - it cooks. I hate those edge warps - sometimes it's hard to see them until they are spinning on a TT. You might have re-flattened the record, but if the grooves are stretched/distorted by the warping, there's no un-stretching/un-distorting them. :banghead:

In the 60's,70's,80's and part of the 90's (pre internet) ... if you were a radio listener who didn't have access to mags or a record store, the norm would be to hear and know music of a group without ever knowing who they were or looked like. I grew up in an affluent , older population town and dont even know if there was a record store . Didnt read the mags and so your idea of an artist or group was whatever you could glean from the music/DJ's..CCR was often thought to be a southern black group , tho early on in their career (Golliwogs days) they tried to dress British and get in on the British Invasion fad.

so back to the original jibe .....am very familiar with RP , just had NOT seen that album cover before in all my box digging.

it rather suggests another sub-topic "regionality" , but we'll save that for a different post.

Here is the Jazz Times note:

Three of the core members of the seminal jazz-rock group Return to Forever have joined forces again for a blockbuster tour, this time adding violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and guitarist Frank Gambale to the mix. The five will be doing a 32-city tour, beginning on August 7. Sharing a bill with RTF IV, as they’re calling themselves, will be Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa, a tribute from son to father.

In a press release received at JazzTimes, Corea said: “Since all the guys in the band are such good composers, I wanted to have everyone’s compositions add to the new RTF IV vibe. So we all agreed: let’s open it up — which is the way we like it, and I think the way the fans like it too.”

This is one of my favorite Airplane records, lots of strengths of the different players are showcased here. It stands up to repeat listens for me, and I also have it on cassette. Marty Balin's last record before leaving the band, and Jorma and Jack put more energy into Hot Tuna after this record, but they are all here for this one. with Jerry Garcia, Stephen Stills, Nicky Hopkins, David Crosby. Crosby is also credited on the record for "sailboat" - I guess that's the sound of his boat at the beginning of "Wooden Ships" which is appropriate since the song was written and composed in Florida on Crosby's boat by Kantner, Stills and Crosby - I've read that Grace and others were partying on that boat at the time. A nice break from the music business I guess.

This one never gets old for me. especially after years ago reading about how Brian Wilson worked in the studio on this record, working with L.A. session musicians including Barney Kessel, Carol Kaye, and Hal Blaine, and hearing the studio outtakes when the Pet Sounds box set was released. There is a wall of sound here, layers of instrumental backing tracks from live ensembles, combined with echo, reverb or doubled instrument tracks or unusual instruments, and it's pretty amazing to hear these parts within this record's sound stage in mono, as Brian mixed it.

Gil Scott-Heron, pioneering musician of ‘Revolution Will Not Be Televised,’ dies in NYC at 62

By Associated Press, Published: May 27 | Updated: Saturday, May 28, 1:08 AM

NEW YORK — Musician Gil Scott-Heron, who helped lay the groundwork for rap by fusing minimalistic percussion, political expression and spoken-word poetry on songs such as “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” died Friday at age 62.

A friend, Doris C. Nolan, who answered the telephone listed for his Manhattan recording company, said he died in the afternoon at St. Luke’s Hospital after becoming sick upon returning from a European trip.

“We’re all sort of shattered,” she said.

Scott-Heron’s influence on rap was such that he sometimes was referred to as the Godfather of Rap, a title he rejected.

“If there was any individual initiative that I was responsible for it might have been that there was music in certain poems of mine, with complete progression and repeating ‘hooks,’ which made them more like songs than just recitations with percussion,” he wrote in the introduction to his 1990 collection of poems, “Now and Then.”

He referred to his signature mix of percussion, politics and performed poetry as bluesology or Third World music. But then he said it was simply “black music or black American music.”

“Because Black Americans are now a tremendously diverse essence of all the places we’ve come from and the music and rhythms we brought with us,” he wrote.

Nevertheless, his influence on generations of rappers has been demonstrated through sampling of his recordings by artists, including Kanye West.

Scott-Heron recorded the song that would make him famous, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” which critiqued mass media, for the album “125th and Lenox” in Harlem in the 1970s. He followed up that recording with more than a dozen albums, initially collaborating with musician Brian Jackson. His most recent album was “I’m New Here,” which he began recording in 2007 and was released in 2010.

Throughout his musical career, he took on political issues of his time, including apartheid in South Africa and nuclear arms. He had been shaped by the politics of the 1960s and the black literature, especially of the Harlem Renaissance.

Scott-Heron was born in Chicago on April 1, 1949. He was raised in Jackson, Tenn., and in New York before attending college at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

Before turning to music, he was a novelist, at age 19, with the publication of “The Vulture,” a murder mystery.

He also was the author of “The Nigger Factory,” a social satire.

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/records%204/hpr001.jpg

Robbins is a blind piano player, a Nashville session legend and he played on Dylan's Blonde On Blonde. There are several cooking tracks here including Robbins own composition and a cover of Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue. I can do without the heavy handed synthesizer and strings on a couple of tracks, but most tracks are some nice tasty session work complete with twangy guitar and punchy drums, highlighting Robbins' keyboard skills - A Swingin' Safari; Blue Bayou.

Many of the same session guys who played with Kooper for the Blonde On Blonde sessions in '66 - McCoy, Jerry Kennedy, Wayne Moss, Kenny Buttrey. There are also covers of Harry Nilsson, Stevie Winwood, and Gamble-Huff songs here. Inside cover notes are titled "Line Her Nodes" :D

Well, she is a fine singer, and he is a fine guitarist despite being a Yankees fan. But, IMO, she is not supertalented enough to carry off the vocal gymnastics without sounding forced or corny. Very very few are. Integrating it with the piece of music is, frankly, a bitch. There she is more Yoko Ono than Maria Pia De Vito (who can do the kazoo without a kazoo, btw).

Music lover that I am, I still enjoyed it. Thanks for the link.

Here is one from me, wrong thread I know. This lady has a lovely voice, is the master of several styles, and accompanies herself here on guitar. From her husband David Mamet's movie Redbelt.

If she hadn't been so busy being a wife, actress and Mom she should be having Nora Jones' career. I think Rebecca is quite a bit more talented. She is the premier talent at Chesky Records, the audiophile label. The label that had a spectacular talent in Badi Assad, but thew it away by recording her dynamically flat and way behind the mix. I posted her years ago. Here it is again. Look up talent in the encyclopedia and her picture should be the illustration.

She is doing everything we are talking about here. While playing harmonics and bass lines on her guitar, she sings and simultaneously performs her other sounds - all at once, and seamlessly. That is the sort of integration I was talking about.

One of the many sad secrets of the popular music business is the way this little gem languished in obscurity. It should have been heard by millions, but disappeared at the height of psychedelia. Two years later, The Band found an audience with haunting tales of bygone rustic North American life with their seminal, self-titled second album. Widespread acclaim eluded the earlier outing by this unheralded Canadian trio. The songs, most written independently by Daisy DeBolt or Allan Fraser, are poetic.
