A concept album, with the band pretending to be a series of different groups, playing in varying styles from psychedelic "The Last Thing I Remember, The First Thing I Knew" - The Atomic Enchilada, to surf music "Surfer Dan" - The Cross Fires, to bluegrass "Chicken Little Was Right" - Fats Mallard and the Bluegrass Fireball. "Food" - The Bigg Brothers, includes a brownie recipe with a special ingredient. Fun stuff, nice job covering different music styles. :D The inner gatefold includes pictures of the different bands.

I had seen that clip years ago but forgot about it. Thanks! There is a second clip of him performing "Four and Twenty." Sometimes I forget that Stills is a monstrous talent and think he is just an astonishing talent. Next to Neil Young, he still shines too and that is the highest compliment I can pay a musician. I saw them together once before in Buffalo Springfield; I wish I had caught more CSN&Y concerts. The brass ring for me would have been to see the Tonight's The Night band out somewhere. But I have never been to California and those gigs were low key and stealthy. My chances of talking to Garbo would have been better.

Sad, but looking back it's amazing how much he accomplished in the 60s and early 70s BEFORE he was 25 years old. in the middle of those times, losing Jimi Hendrix who I have read he was close to, plus having money and rockroll fame poured on him. I have never finished Shakey, that's a good reminder to pick it back up, thanks.

The album was written and recorded between 1978 and 1980. His first true solo LP, called the Who album that never was by some. It shows Townshend's continuing ability to come up with great material, this includes "Let Me Love Open The Door", a great song and a top ten hit in the US.

recorded fall 1970, this was the last James Gang studio album with Joe Walsh. More of Joe's signature scorching guitar work, multi-tracked into a "train wreck" on Walk Away. I'm comparing a couple of copies which appear identical except for the runout matrices, one has "1A" and the other "RE1" appended to the matrix numbers. The latter has "with love from Jessica..." script in the deadwax which appears on several JG titles.

During the Memphis sessions in November 1968, Dusty suggested that the heads of Atlantic Records should sign the newly-formed band Led Zeppelin. She knew the band's bass player, John Paul Jones, who had backed her in concerts. Without having ever seen them and largely on Dusty's advice, the record company signed a $200,000 deal with them. That was the biggest contract of its kind for a new band up until that time

I found some background information - Berry was in an L.A. country-rock band called Timber, they had a 1971 record on Elektra titled "Bring America Home". no doubt he ran in the same circles as Jackson Browne. I'll have to check for deadwax markings on the Fogelberg records, a good excuse to spin one. Joe Walsh played (and produced) some of the DF records, IIRC.

Smilin' Ears distinguished itself by being the first bootleg label to release a four-record Zeppelin box set, titled "Destroyer". The set originally listed as a Seattle recording, though it actually featured a concert from Cleveland in 1977. The set has become one of the best known and loved of all Zeppelin titles and has been reissued many times.

1977.04.27 Cleveland - Destroyer - The first 1977 SBD to circulate. An early 4 LP version was packaged in a large plastic case. The best available source is a 1st gen reel off the master cassettes. There are some cuts, but this version is the most and the best we have of this show. On the Must Haves list.

pretty ambitious to cover the "History of British Rock" in 2 LPs, not to mention licensing issues which no doubt dictates what's here and what isn't (no Stones, no Who, no Cream...). Starts off well with Fleetwood Mac's Black Magic Woman. includes tracks from The Animals, Cilla Black, Gerry and The Pacemakers, Donovan, Troggs (Wild Thing), Dusty Springfield (rock?), Mannfred Mann, Kinks, Freddie and The Dreamers, 1961 era Beatles (John Lennon leering his way through Ain't She Sweet). special treat - a young Rod Stewart as guest vocalist with a band named Python Lee Jackson. a simple non-gatefold cover with the LPs next to each other in plain white inner sleeves. A $1 pickup at HPB last month.

First studio album with Ron Wood as Mick Taylor's replacement, he plays on half the tracks, with the other tracks covered by Harvey Mandel and Wayne Perkins.


The album was promoted with a controversial billboard on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood that depicted the model Anita Russell, bruised and bound by Mick Jagger under the phrase "I'm Black and Blue from the Rolling Stones — and I love it!" The billboard was removed after protests by the feminist group Women Against Violence Against Women, although it earned the band widespread press coverage.

/\ I remember seeing this, maybe I saw reporting on the billboard? a $1 thrifty grab tonight, in excellent shape.

Like a lot of folks I first heard Havens with his incredible Woodstock opening acoustic performance of George Harrison's Here Comes The Sun. Several covers here but he has a lot of electrical help, including Steely Dan session guitarist Elliot Randall playing the leads on Dave Mason's Headkeeper and Neil Young's The Loner (Greg Reeves, from CSNY's Deja Vu band, on Bass). Also covers of Dylan's Sad Eyed Lady (of the Lowlands) and McCartney's Band On The Run.

It does sound like they pick up where they left off, sounds and looks like they are having fun together. Includes a ~5 minute bluesy cover of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.

One of the solo LPs that each member of CSNY released after Deja Vu. includes performances by David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Neil Young, Dave Mason, David Lindley, Chris Etheridge, Rita Coolidge. Terry Reid co-authored "Be Yourself" with Nash. a long time favorite for me, Nash hits the mark with this one with simple and sincere songs. It probably doesn't hurt that he had the supporting cast of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Flying Burrito Brothers, etc, in the LA and SF studios/circles where some great music was being produced by these characters at that time.

tried disk 1 ..lots of gospel...played better than condition appeared ...think I'll digitize and let AudioLava clean it up

I saw the CB at SBCC in mid '68 on leave from bootcamp ..they opened for The Doors and were the better show.

Allmusic says that the vocals from Candy Givens are sometimes histrionic, fair enough, but she really belts out and reminds me of Lydia Pense or Ann Wilson. I knew that I had a Tommy Bolin album, but I'd forgot that it was this one.

I picked this up in a large collection a few years ago, plays wonderfully. I bought the 45 of Lies back in the 60s when it was side-by-side with Beatles hits in the Top 40. This is a first listen to the LP. They were definitely channelling the Liverpool sound here, catchy 60s rock pop tunes with organ and more of the fuzzy guitar chords that saturate "Lies".

recorded at concerts in 72 & 73 in SF, NYC and Boston. I saw them play at the Univ of Washington in Seattle in April '73. Yeah lots of songs played to death on hit radio like "Your Mama Don't Dance" but they had a good stage show. Especially Jim Messina with his Buffalo Springfield/Poco roots, he led extended versions "Angry Eyes" and "Vahaleva" which raised the roof.

I was excited to see this one this week at a thrift store in excellent shape. There were several tasty records in the bins from someone with initials "RE". :( I think I have most of the Nesmith solo LPs but didn't have this one. Some great introspective songs here, written before and during his time with The Monkees. Looks like he was in good company when shooting pictures for the inner gatefold, "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" is the book title he is holding.

Another tasty thrift find this week apparently from the collection of "RE" < initials on the covers :( Nelson is a singer songwriter ("Down So Low") with a great voice. Her SF band Mother Earth played the Fillmore Auditorium, sharing bills with the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix in the 60s. I have a couple of other Tracy Nelson records, which feature pictures of her with dogs; this well-worn cover includes a picture of her with a calico cat.

The Dead were just a 5-piece configuration when these were recorded in early '71, with Merl Saunders joining on organ for several tunes. the improvisational magic is there, especially Garcia, Weir, and with Phil Lesh holding the harmony together with that melodic bass while going off on his own excursions.

Jack Tempchin and Jules Shear's band. Tempchin is a singer/songwriter who worked with the Eagles, wrote a few of their hits including Peaceful Easy Feeling, Already Gone, ..... Shear went on to Jules And The Polar Bears. This record sounds interchangeable with a lot of S. California rock from the time - Eagles, Souther/Hillman/Furay, etc, with a bunch of nice original Tempchin songs.

I'd probably have just shelved this one because I'm not a fan of the later pop-influenced Chicago records but I wanted to check out another Quad record. There are still redeeming qualities here and it's worth a listen, like the Chicago V record but weak on the songwriting and compared with the jazz explorations of the earlier albums.

The only record from this Philadelphia based rock/jazz band which opened for Captain Beefheart. The band's name came from a response from Don Van Vliet when asked for a name for the band. Includes an 8:53 cover of Zappa's King Kong and a version of John McLaughlin's Dragon Song. A random garage sale find a few years ago.

the seller did not have an active setup to demo it on...its been double boxed in his garage a couple of years...we did pull it out , give it power and let a record spin....dead quiet, silky operation....it just oozed quality during normal operation...return privileges

may get it hooked up tomorrow..gonna read the owners manual tonight....will report then.

My kids love this movie and after watching it a few times I can see why, wish they made more movies like this, really quite wonderful even if it is computer animated.
The soundtrack is actually pretty exceptional with the added bonus of Peter Gabriel's song Down to Earth which is a fantastic song in its own right.

The debut record for the 21 year old slide-guitar folk blues singer-songwriter. Love the Robert Christgau comment on the record & Raitt at the time: "renders all the Collins/Baez melodrama superfluous". Recorded at an empty summer camp on Enchanted Island, about 30 miles west of Minneapolis on Lake Minnetonka. "We recorded live on four tracks because we wanted a more spontaneous and natural feeling in the music," Raitt wrote in the album's liner notes, "a feeling often sacrificed when the musicians know they can overdub their part on a separate track until it's perfect." Leads off with a cover of Stephen Stills' Bluebird.

Congratulations on that new Denon TT. Nice picture! I bet that sounds nice on the "fake but fun" L100s. Mick Ralphs from Mott The Hoople on guitar. I saw these guys back in '74 when they toured for this album. The copies of Bad Co. that I've heard were nice sounding, cut at The Mastering Lab.

This one has been in the to-play queue for awhile. I'm photographing the inner gatefold/trifold, partly because the front cover has serious ring wear. recorded from concerts at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, California, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and at The Rainbow in London in the summer of 1973. a note about the production:

Unlike most live rock albums, there was no studio overdubbing allowed by Morrison, which resulted in the exclusion of "Moondance" from the album due to one wrong guitar note. Morrison strictly adhered to his concept of authenticity in presenting the live performance but his musical perfectionism prevented him from including "Moondance".[15] "It's common practice to go back and fix things, but not with Van," bass player David Hayes said, "I think that's what makes it one of the best ever."

(what a great voice) ....and off to the thrift today and happy to grab "The Buckinghams GH" , good condition , 78 cents .....I've been a casual fan since high school ....love Mercy,Mercy,Mercy .

In approximately 18 months' time, The Buckinghams had Top 5, Top 10 and Top 20 records with the release of singles every three months, including “Don’t You Care,” “Hey Baby, They’re Playing Our Song,” “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” (USA Records), "Susan" and “Back in Love Again.” Columbia quickly released two albums, Time and Charges and Portraits produced by Guercio. USA Records released an album composed of all the sides recorded at Chess Studios in 1965 that was simply titled Kind of a Drag on the strength of their #1 national hit. The Buckinghams were named by Billboard Magazine as “The Most Listened to Band in America” in 1967.

rocking out with the local homeboys, I agree with a music critic that I heard discussing the 90s ("I Love The 90s'") this week on NPR's All Music Considered show...these guys along with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees lots of others brought back guitar rock in the 90s, and made mainstream rock radio listenable for a brief period. 20 years ago! These guys are still making great popular music. I grabbed this record at a garage sale last summer for $1.

I think this is a good follow-up but doesn't match their debut record. w/ Jerry Garcia: pedal steel guitar, banjo. More of the whirly floating psychedelic music on some songs, but more folky and earthy with the Garcia NRPS influence and also David LaFlamme was contributing to an early version of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks at the time. The SF Sound label was/is owned by IABD's infamous first manager Matthew Katz, who had them playing at a club of the same name in Seattle in the late 60s. from Wiki: "From 1965 through 1973, Katz opened two different music clubs named "San Francisco Sound." The Seattle location was in a building on Capitol Hill originally named The Encore Ballroom. It is now a Public Storage warehouse"

a compilation release of 13 songs, the Doors first compilation and the only one released before Jim Morrison's death. I have a couple of copies of this record, both butterfly label with the coverl/abel text the same on both, however the one of the cover photos has a blue tint and a grainy-er higher contrast photo, and the other one is more neutral. Not sure if the differences show up in the photo here - higher contrast cover is on the right.

Your contribution reminds me that I think there is a need for a similar thread that doesn't so much document everything anyone is listening to at the moment but suggestions for the best of what you've listened to that others might want to know about. For many of us (well, I'll speak for myself) that might be just great recordings regardless of genre. Something you'd want to turn others on to instead of what happens to be on the table at the moment. Maybe something like "Best-recordings recommendations, new or old". :dont-know:

I've come across some great recordings from mention on this site as well as offerings from friends. I'd love to share them but quite frankly I don't think those who might also benefit from exposure to them are interested in this thread enough to follow it for those infrequent nuggets.

That is a wonderful graphic. I guess you are not a K bike fan. ;)

Pretty early in this thread someone did lament that they thought its intent was as you suggest. I say no matter, it now exposes us to a whole bunch of music we might not otherwise ever hear of. No matter, that is, as long as there is another thread like you suggest. I say start it now! It will be like the two movie music threads we have, one being about soundtracks and the other about music. Room for both, and both valuable.

Another possible thread title might be "Favorite Recordings" or "Favorite Music." The latter would separate it, semantically, from recording quality and put it squarely in the music category. I feel that recording quality is, while a major high fidelity issue, a minor or irrelevant issue in reference to music. I sometimes listen to an old low rez mp3 of an old 1930s recording. It is the only way I have found it, and I enjoy it very much. Speaking for myself, it is all about the music. I think music can enrich our lives and our inner consciousness, but hifi can only facilitate experiencing music.

The word "favorite" is probably not good, now that I think about it. "Great" or "Superior" Music would eliminate the nostalgia factor. Music is not great just because it figures prominently in the soundtrack of our lives. What was playing when we had our first date with our wives may or may not be superior music.

It is nice that you trust my taste in Jazz, but sooner or later you will be burned, of course. I would say that if both Krunchy and I like a recording, go for it. :bouncy: Krunchy has great taste in music and equipment. He is a really great guy as well. I am proud to call him a friend. And he is the reason I ever heard One Flight Up, and a bunch of other now favorite discs. I expect that he would be a contributor to the new thread, as well as you and I.

I'm listening to the 2007 Elektra/Rhino remaster....wow , the dynamics are really there ...LMF has been speeded up a tad, remaster was done by Botnick ..the original engineer, who opens the documentation saying "WARNING: This isnt the same album you've been listening to for 40 years. Well, actually it is and it isn't. So don't get freaked out...." ..."One of the most startling things was that the original album as it has existed on the street for 40 years is running slow and off key - flat" and he goes on into the tech aspects ...bottom line: THIS VERSION SOUNDS NEW & FANTASTIC !!

LATER EDIT: I dubbed this CD to minidisk and listened last night with the Senn 580's , the detail is fantastic , very solid bass , detail/group chatter that I'd never heard...

read further..."LMF" and "Break on Through" for 45 were the correct speeds, but the LP versions were slow ... on AM they needed a little more HF, so they wrapped a piece of splicing tape around the capstan to give a little more speed ...(so the faster speed compensated for the overall slower speeds,,,resulting in the 45 version being correct)
also, the speeds varied by
where the position in the tape was...ie; if the takeup reel was fuller, the weight slowed down the drive motors a tad ...so the first recorded on a reel was most accurate.

When "Light MY Fire" is re-speeded , it clocks in at 6:50 as stated on the cover as opposed to the 7:05 as stated on the CD and actual LP.

Funny you shud mention that group ..... I just watched the 3 DVD set of selected acts from the Dick Cavett show (1969).....one disk included The Airplane , and Stills & Crosby ...right after Woodstock.

Grace was just making usual noises, Crosby was showing off his lack of skills, and they were sitting in a circle on nauga mushrooms, Dick asked Stills if he was going to perform (since he had his guitar at the ready) ....WOW, that was the best performance of all 3 discs...Stephen HAS to be in the top 5 American guitarists, (and his vocals arent too bad either.) ;)
