Got out on the TREK today dodging rain drops and snagged these 2 ...they arent LP's that I normally look for but they were in seemingly unplayed condition...the Sinatras Swingin' Session is MONO....I like Bobbie's voice.

The water soaked "In through the Out Door" from last week cleaned up real well ....been experimenting with modes on LP playback....currently using PL IIx M , sound is everywhere..forget pinpoint imaging..:o: ..think I'll be back to STEREO or DIRECT soon.

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/Records1/muddy001.jpg

The 2nd Muddy record produced by Johnny Winter for Blue Sky, won a grammy in '78. Pretty sure Muddy wasn't singing about the wonders of viagra in the title track, like those stupid tv commercials. with Winter on guitar, Pinetop Perkins on Piano, Jimmie Rogers, Walter Horton.

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/Records1/winter001.jpg

Winter's first studio album, after playing on his brother's Second Winter record. all songs composed with his brother Johnny (who plays harp and guitar here), except for two which were composed by Edgar alone. A multi instrumentalist, he is all over the place here blues, pop, R&B, a good indication of the wild stuff he put out later like White Trash and Frankenstein. Some very nice bluesy guitar and sax playing here, well produced ....by Edgar Winter.

fab weather in PDX today (80 F) ...took off for that new record shop I'd found last week ...I googled out the route by bike this AM..Goog said it was 6.2 miles...came home and looked at the bike computer ..12.32 miles RT.

so I picked up these 4 (back was getting sore) 2 commons - but great condition and ones that I like , and 2 that I'd never seen ,,, even in catalogs.

I like most of what WAR does, Its a Beautiful Day LIVE ,,who knew ?? its got all their famous tunes ..both in super shape too..:bouncy:

last night I had Pandora going on the iTouch in bed ....tuned to the Beethoven channel and caught Symphony 3 Eroica (Italian for "heroic") and it was good...then Le Quattro Stagioni , one of my absolute favs , Oh I like Vivaldi , dug out Anne Sophie Mutter's version to listen tonight (I think its the BEST version - that girl has real passion ) and to cap it off was Jack & Meg (Elephant) while on 2 wheels today...somehow it all melded OK.

Comedian/actor Chevy Chase confirmed that his group Chameleon Church toured the South pretending to be Orpheus and that producer Alan Lorber was behind the deception. When confronted, Lorber denied it. But Chevy Chase explained that as he sang Arnold's part, people yelled "You're not Orpheus".

been listening to recent vinyl finds this AM ....Steve Miller and Eagles "On the Border"
had forgotten how good OtB really is ...for an old Eagles fan this has to be at least the equal of H.F.O or Hotel.Cal.

amazon reviews seems to agree with me..

Amazon.com essential recording
On their third album, the Eagles finally produced a No. 1 hit with "The Best of My Love," but most of On the Border is marked by tough rockers, not sweet ballads. "Already Gone" is a brusque kiss-off and "Midnight Flyer" a bluegrass kicker, while "James Dean" recalls the '50s rebel icon, and the title track reflects on paranoia and creeping Big Brotherism. The Eagles also cover a Tom Waits (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ts/artist-glance/15382/$%7B0%7D) tune, "Ol' 55," and pay tribute to alt-country godfather Gram Parsons (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ts/artist-glance/55886/$%7B0%7D) on "My Man." The album title is prophetic in the sense that the band that made this record (bolstered by the addition of guitarist Don Felder) was on the verge of greatness, but not quite there yet. --Daniel Durchholz

debut record with most of the songs composed by Brian Wilson including the title song and 409, which were hits. A lot of hokey lyrics and doo-wap singing, but there are bright spots besides the hits. a nice cover of Summertime Blues. Production credit to Nick Venet, but wikipedia says Brian did the production work. Carl's friend David Marks is pictured on the back cover; he replaced Al Jardine when he left and did not rejoin the band until 1963. Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Thirty songs, spread out over two discs and well over two and a half hours, with fine performances, great sound, and good visual direction: it's all here on Farewell 1 Tour, a documentary of the Eagles' 2004 concert in Melbourne, Australia. At one point, the veteran band seemed unlikely to even make it to the new millennium, but here they are, mostly intact, with a string of hits dating back more than three decades. The majority of them are performed here, from the earliest ("Take It Easy," "Desperado," "Peaceful Easy Feeling") through "Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane" and right up to "Love Will Keep Us Alive" (from Hell Freezes Over, their most recent recording with new material on it); there are also hits from Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh's solo careers, and a few new songs as well, including Walsh's "One Day at a Time" (an earnest ode to his new-found sobriety) and "Hole in the World," Frey and Henley's moving, almost gospel-tinged reaction to the events of 9/11/01. Guitarist Don Felder, who split acrimoniously with the band in 2001, isn't much missed, as replacement Steuart Smith plays the parts just as Felder did--i.e., pretty much exactly as they were recorded (indeed, pristine recreations of the studio versions of their songs has always been a hallmark of the Eagles' live shows). As for the somewhat cheeky title, well, there's always been a certain smugness to the Eagles' sense of humor, and it's no different this time, as Frey doesn't even pretend that there won't be a Farewell 2 Tour in the future. And why not? These are good songs, played beautifully by the quartet (plus supplemental musicians) to audiences that love them. Bonus material is limited to perfunctory interviews with the band. --Sam Graham

For fans of the ex-Beatle, there are myriad events coming to mark that significant birthdate Oct. 9 as well as the 30th anniversary of his death on Dec. 8.

Yoko reveals it was Paul who saved her marriage to John

It became a legendary event in John Lennon's increasingly eccentric life - famously known as 'the lost weekend'.

And now, on the day John Lennon fans around the world are celebrating what would have been his 70th birthday, his widow, Yoko Ono, has revealed what happened during those days when John disappeared with their pretty personal assistant.

And despite a well known war of words with Beatle Paul McCartney, Yoko credits Macca with actually saving their marriage.

That's one of my all-time favorites. I'd like to get levitation. Every few months, I drag that thing out and listen over and over for a few days. Who knew a jug could be made to sound like that? Back when this record was new, the mystery to those of us in the east who'd never seen these guys was how they made that weird little bubbly sound. The influence of this band is incredible--on even the Rolling Stones-- and is apparent only after the fact--enormous, yet, in their own day, unacknowledged. Too bad about Rory Ericsson--there's a real tragedy. One windowpane too many, or something...

comparing a couple of tan label copies. Joe Smith, president of Warner Bros. at the time, was noted as calling Anthem of the Sun as "the most unreasonable project with which we have ever involved ourselves." includes parts of live tracks from concerts in late 1967, early 1968 including Seattle and Portland performances. from wikipedia:

The band used a large assortment of instruments in the studio to augment the live tracks that were the base of each song, including kazoos, crotales, a harpsichord, timpani, guiro, and a trumpet. Garcia commented that parts of the album were "far out, even too far out ... We weren't making a record in the normal sense; we were making a collage."

Nice finds. Wow those must have been fun concerts. I remember listening to the Green Grass & High Tides track on a friend's system back in high school days. ...Speakerlab 7's and a big Sansui receiver IIRC. Green grass and high tides forever.

Good to see that the Night Owl show is on your radar. That's supposed to be one fo the best shows - they serve beer and play tunes while you browse. What could be better? I'm going to hit the Seattle Center record show tomorrow morning, right under the Space Needle, it's a good show with favorite sellers. I hope to grab a bunch of tasty jazz records from one guy who always has a couple dozen dollar boxes (the same guy at the last Portland show).

Aha! Diamond Head --- I've been a big Manzanera fan for Years ...
from his work with Roxy Music, his solo work, and his work with 801 and other bands!

But today, I dug out some other vinyl from my UK artists collection ...

Since my OPPO is off for repairs, I dug out some licorice Pizzas for the Denon and Stanton to feed on! These 3 are from 74-77 era

The Mathematician's Air Display - Pekka Pahjola (with Mike Oldfield on the title track)

Quantum Jump - first album - these guys influences were jazz fusion like Di meola, with a bit of Kool and the gang and some edgy lyrics (The Lone Ranger, No American Starship)

John G. Perry - Sunset Wading - great environmental stuff with edgy bass, the late Simon Jeffes, the late Morris Pert and a bunch of other canterbury-era names ...

purchased new in the mid 70s. Even listening to a crappy US stereo version on the parent's console in the 1960s, this was a favorite and I wore it out. My long-standing favorite Beatles record. I've always liked how the songs had more depth than their earlier hits ....a look at things to come with these promising lads from Liverpool. Even with the channel separation, this pressing is clearly better than the remastered CD - I have the mono box. I like the natural sounds of the percussion and stringed instruments, the rawness of Lennon's voice on Norwegian Wood.

Midnight on Cloud 69 has eight selections by the original version of George Shearing's quintet, featuring vibraphonist Marjorie Hyams and bassist Chuck Wayne. In addition to some standards, the group plays such wittily-titled originals as "Sorry, Wrong Rumba," "Bebop's Fables" and "Four Bars Short." Four other songs put the spotlight on the Red Norvo Trio whose vibes-guitar-bass instrumentation is still unique and exciting.

This is hard-swinging yet quiet music that is highly recommended." ...so I guess will return and snag it.

Tattoo You - the album that a noted forum critic calls "the last great Stones album"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tattoo_You

Tattoo You is the 16th British and 18th American studio album by The Rolling Stones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rolling_Stones), released in 1981. The follow-up to Emotional Rescue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_Rescue), it proved to be a big critical and commercial success. A very popular album upon release, it is the last Rolling Stones album to reach the top position of the US charts, ending a string of number ones dating back to 1971's Sticky Fingers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticky_Fingers).
Critical reaction
Reviews for Tattoo You were largely positive, proclaiming the album a return to form and ranking among the Rolling Stones' finest works. Debra Rae Cohen commented in Rolling Stone, "Just when we might finally have lost patience, the new record dances (not prances), rocks (not jives) onto the scene, and the Rolling Stones are back again, with a matter-of-fact acceptance of their continued existence – and eventual mortality.
Accolades
In 1989, it was ranked #34 on Rolling Stone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stone) magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s. Bernard Krause/Paul Beaver on Moog, Hammond and Pipe organ, Mike Bloomfield on guitar, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax, Howard Roberts on guitar, Bud Shank on sax, flute, Clydie King on vocals. Ronnie Montrose also recorded on guitar on various pieces. Liner notes indicate that some of this music is an outgrowth of work they did for the soundtrack for the Mick Jagger movie Performance.

...although I'm wary of the Vanilla Fudge, can't recall how that one sounds but I really hate "The Beat Goes On". and it's not a so-bad-it's-good kind of deal.

Whoa--there's one of the first of the fad followers from The Day. I bought that thing when it first came out, and, after having listened (religiously) to the 13th Floor Elevators--probably the only guy at WVU, capital of Motown, who did such a thing at that time, I thought maybe I'd made a mistake when I heard Magoos music floating out of a frat house window on my way home with it in a bag, but it turns out they did a really fine job on their version of "Tobacco Road." I still like it. "Incense and Peppermints," though....

looked out the window and said YUK ...then I remembered why I've been buying rain gear all summer .... rode to SA but everything was beat up...got to talking to another vinyl seeker (who got zilch also) and told him about the bookstore a half mile away...by the time I got there , he was already pawing thru...I came up with 5 and asked the clerk if I can get a referral fee...she gave me a free LP. :D

Found Quicksilver Msg Service "what about me" ..but no jacket...so transplanted it to this UK 12 TOPS empty jacket....prolly better than the original cover :bouncy: (have NEVER seen this QMS album b4)

Oh, just couldnt resist "Flower Power Sitar" ;) GMV actually has a nice track selection too...FYC ?? listened to their 12in. single of "She drives me Crazy" yesterday , sure makes the big AR's wake up ...:applaud:

Yeah, agree, it's a nice cover of Tobacco Road. yes they are no 13th Floor Elevators but they are worth another listen, and not throwaway bubblegum pop like.... you made me go look... ...."Incense and Peppermint" was a Strawberry Alarm Clock song.

Yep. Someone characterized Cold Blood w/ Lydia as "Blood, Sweat & Tears with Janis Joplin on Lead vocals" -- I agree but I think Lydia was a bit smoother and less a screamer than Janis. It's a shame we couldn't hear the blues singer that Janis would have grown into...

(1969, Deram) Bell Sound SF in the deadwax; Promo/NS (sticker on back cover)

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/Records1/jc001.jpg

Thrift find last week. I was not familiar with artist but glad I grabbed this. Some really nice jazz playing here from 4 white British guys. wonderful Bell Sound pressing. ...research (http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/john_cameron_quartet/off_centre/) turns up: John Cameron was British composer / arranger / pianist - he worked with Donovan. This was apparently the only jazz record he did. unusual time signatures on piano – typical of the British Jazz around that period. great playing by Cameron; Harold McNair, sax and flute; Danny Thompson, bass, and drummer Tony Carr.

You're perfectly right. I'm sorry I classed the Magoos with The Strawberry Alarm Clock-Lemon Pipers crowd. I guess my memory isn't whatever it used to be--I could've looked at the song list on the cover photo, but didn't, and, oh the shame, my formerly encyclopedic knowledge of this maligned sub-genre--now blindingly revealed as faulty.

And now, to change the subject, would you call the Seeds "psychedelic" or "proto-punk"? I just got a CD collection of all the Seeds stuff ("The Seeds," "Web of Sound," and "The Sky Saxon Blues Band with a Spoonful of Seedy Blues") I hadn't heard since vinyl days. Some of it is actually as good as I remember. A lot of it, however....

a recent record show pickup. ...listening to record 1 (side 1&4). from wiki:

This compilation included some alternate mixes of "The Bird Has Flown" and "Why Didn't Rosemary?", with the former having a clean intro instead of a fade-in on the album version. It also included the final Purple MK I single "Emmaretta" for the first time on LP

One of my favorite Jesse's from my past. Eclipsed today only by being able to hear him live since he lives a couple of miles from me and is one of my customers. He's the same old guy he used to be, hasn't changed at all! :D

I just finished listening to a new-to-me CD I've been playing in the car for a few weeks. First time full run-through over the 4345s though. I bought it because I'd heard it was a well-recorded album even if the style might not be what I'm used to hearing from this artist. I wasn't disappointed, and I liked the style, too. Beautiful recording full of life for horn lovers:

I'm the same old guy that I used to be
I haven't changed at all
I got the same old walk and the same old talk
That would run you up the wall
The same old face and the same old smile and
The same old baby blues
And I'm still doing the rhumba, baby
So I'm still the man for you
I'm still doing the rhumba baby
I can't seem to quit
If my mama catches us doing the rhumba
Mama would just pitch a fit
But I can't help myself, it's much bigger than me
If I were you, I'd hang onto a rhumba man like me

knowing what it actually is.....sounds great and I like the finished product , and then was surprised  by the following...

To fake or not to fake: That is the question consumers must answer for themselves in assessing this feat of aural Photoshopping: an "imaginary concert" created by combining recently discovered soundboard tapes of Ray Charles's vocals from a mid-'70s European show and newly recorded backing by the Count Basie Orchestra--the "ghost band," still on the road 22 years after Count's passing. Charles is in exceptional voice, singing the heck out of standards like "How Long Has This Been Going On?," Genius classics like "Busted," and pop covers like Melanie's "Look What They've Done to My Song." His performance is a thrilling corrective to forgettable posthumous albums like Genius Loves Company, designed to cash in on the new audience created for him by the movie Ray.

http://jazztimes.com/articles/17525-ray-charles-and-count-basie-we-meet-at-last

Once the music was in place, work began on the vocals. They were matched to the instrumental tracks in Pro Tools using markers such as cymbal hits or bass notes. “That [process] would exactly retain Ray’s phrasing,” said Field. Then came the challenge of sonically restoring the decades-old live recording to the level of the newer material.
“Halfway through the record I was wondering if we could actually pull it off,” recalled Field. “We took one track and spent probably ten days just working on the vocal sound. We finally got that one where [Charles] sounded like he was in the studio with us. Once we got that, we knew we could do the rest.”
The final step was adding in the Raelettes’ background vocals. Field contacted singer Patti Austin to see if she would organize a group of background singers and write arrangements for them.
It was something of a dream come true for Austin, who had known Charles since she was a child. “I think that anybody that grew up listening to Ray Charles wanted to be a Raelette,” she said. What most impressed her as a singer was the quality of Charles’ vocals. “To hear him singing so strong—at the time that he did these performances he was really at his vocal peak.”

Despite some of the reviews...I find the "imaginary concert" very believable and enjoyable , the sonics are super and especially the pacing....if the reviews hadnt given away the secret, I wouldnt have guessed ( except NOTHING from that era sounds THIS good without great remastering)

waayyy back last summer , I discovered this album

normally I dont care for horns,,,but the ones on Genius + Soul = Jazz are very nice..:bouncy:

http://www.amazon.com/Genius-Soul-Jazz-My-Kind/dp/B000003424

Product Description

Charles' only all-instrumental LPs on one CD! 1961's Genius + Soul = Jazz is a big band jazz workout featuring the Count Basie Band and arrangements from Quincy Jones. It includes the Top 10 hit "One Mint Julep."

http://www.warr.org/charles.html#G+S=J

http://www.warr.org/star45.gif Genius + Soul = Jazz (1961)
An unvarnished big band jazz album. Like Genius Of, Jones did the arrangements, but the results are far grittier and swing a lot harder: Ray's distinctive organ playing is prominent (the Top Ten hit "One Mint Julep"), the horns are blowing like crazy ("Birth Of The Blues"), and though most of the tracks are instrumental, Charles' stamp is unmistakable throughout, and his vocal features just stand out further by contrast ("I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town"). Three tunes are Charles originals, including the opening "From The Heart." (DBW)

LATER :went thru Genius + Soul = Jazz 3x... really like it, its one of the better finds in the last month or two...:):D:applaud::bouncy:

and then this one (RC+CB=Genius squared)

.
.....sounds great and I like the finished product .

so I was reading the docs that came with RC+CB=Genius squared and it referenced the G+S=J album

"There wasnt a technical precedent, but there was an artistic one...thats the great G+S=J from the 60's..There he sang with a band of chiefly Basie personnel minus Basie himself. The charts were smoking and Ray sang magnificently. There was a perfect dynamic between singer and orchestra. G+S=J achieved an atomic explosive Ray Basie feel."

guess thats what I was trying to say...;)

2nd picture includes my 1968 copy w/ the W7 two-tone label. I'm doing some JHE listening while waiting for a copy of the West Coast Seattle Boy 8-LP box set, due to arrive next week. Can't wait after reading all the good comments/great reviews on the WCSB release.

I purchased this new in the mid 70s. I sounds really nice, Nice soundstage, top-end, and a deep disturbing low frequencies which suits the material. This one has a top-loading cover and includes cool poster/lyrics sheet. I have the 1977 US Atlantic copy that I picked up garage sale-ing, no insert and the record loads from inside, Uni-pak style.

Bob Dylan - Biograph
(1985, Columbia) mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, NYC

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o240/speakerlabfan/records2/bd001.jpg

A 5-LP box set that I received as a gift back in the 80s. With a 35 page color photo booklet with text and song notes by Cameron Crowe. Several unreleased song versions. My high school age son is writing a paper on American artists (of any kind) that had a strong influence on the times - he picked Dylan, great choice.

8 miles in frigid PDX yesterday, bundled up like a bank robber
(did get funny looks when I stopped in at the bank) ....only LP pickups were classicals...:(

Have been listened to the first 2 albums by Mary Hopkin , what a great voice ....it does seem to fatigue you after extended listening tho

Mary Hopkin (born 3 May 1950), credited on some recordings as Mary Visconti, is a Welsh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_people) folk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_music) singer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singing) best known for her 1968 UK number one single (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_%28music%29) "Those Were The Days (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Those_Were_the_Days_%28song%29)". She was one of the first musicians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musician) to sign to The Beatles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles)' Apple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Records) label (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_label).

Something New was the first Beatles LP I heard, purchased new by my older sister, so the track list is etched in my brain including that german language version of I Want To Hold Your Hand. I picked up this dead-silent excellent copy at a yard sale a couple of years ago.
