I've seen several people selling aftermarket replacement foam dampening rings for JBL tweers. These vary in color, thickness and type of foam. Can anyone tell me what the factory originals were like? Dark grey or black? medium or high density foam? what was the thickness?

JBL has used different foam rings on different models. The L-100s that came with foam rings had a gray open cell foam. The L-36s and many others had a black closed cell foam. There are probably a few others as well.

Well the original le25,le25-2 were a light gray and a open cell soft foam. The next version was an almost black denser and thinner foam on the -4 where you can see the terminals and there is a ring around the driver. The le26 did away with the foam. Attached is an L-36A with the darker black foam. You can see the L100 foam in the Library

Thanks guys that all makes sense to me - scary. Well here is my version of the LE25 on a L100 done with some polyethylene foam, a can, a washer and a razor blade.

Just making sure. Harman is real proud of those puppies right now. :p
I always check both Pro and Home because often the prices are way off with one being a substantially better deal than the other.

hi guys , i'm one of those rapers on ebay, for 20.00 a set but , i was stupid enough to pay 8.00 ea. from jbl home u-no H.K. but thanks to you gentlemen and previous info i found out about jbl pro , so i hope you can forgive me ,i have 14 pairs of JBL speakers from the notorious L100s to 4310s and i needed quite a few sets, but nice job on the homemade one they look great ,it a shame jbl does not make the orig style with the tight grey foam from the 70s .

Hi Rapist,

Did you have a die made, or are you cutting yours by hand too? Or did I misunderstand and you are only selling the closed cell foam rings?

So, we'll be seeing a precipitous drop in eBay pricing for foam rings soon? ;)

And the L-100 grilles for $100? Who's doing them, and what are they?

Sonofagun, a member of this forum, is making the L-100 grilles.
