Hey all,

I've been searching and can't find exactly what I am looking for. I have most of my degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, and had an idea to kinda focus on audio engineering since I have an interest in it. Problem is, it's not called audio engineering, or sound engineering, or anything else I have thought of recently and searched. Basically I think I'd like to be an engineer that travels around to locations and measures the rooms, and acoustics and all of that and help customers choose the best components specs for their setup, and speaker placement, tuning once installed, etc.

But I can't figure out what exactly that would be called, so I can search for schools that have a program that would fit in with something like that. Any ideas of what that may be called?

I believe that would fall into the realm of acoustics engineer or consultant. Many hold PhD's in Physics - but not all - even tho' it is all about physics...

Institute of Acoustics (http://www.ioa.org.uk/) might have some clues. There are others.

Any ideas of what that may be called?Audio engineering which may also be part of production engineering. Mostly for recording engineers but also for system installation specialists. Ithaca College and Georgia Tech are two you might check. Maybe Subwoof knows something about Ithaca. Their program that's closest is a bachelor of music in Sound Recording Technology. :dont-know

Columbia College Chicago has a pretty cool acoustics department. You might check them out.

A full college course in physics is probably in order (or at least very helpful) for what you are talking about as Bo said.

Sounds fun!

My degree is in Electronics I added the audio part on my own.
I know several people that went to Columbia anf took the audio engineering course. They would show me what they were studding and it was good stuff!

Thanks, A LOT, these 2 hit it on the nose. The other suggestions were good too, but Institute of Acoustics is in UK...which is odd, cuz I was considering moving there to get away from everyone in my life here that drive me crazy...then Ithaca was more of a degree in music with an acoustic minor...not really an engineering degree, then Georgia Tech I couldn't find anything related to sound, audio, or acoustic in the search function, which is fine, cuz I never cared for that state anyway. The course titles at Columbia seem to be EXACTLY what I was looking for. Again, thanks to everyone who commented, it really helped my research develop well.

Well, it won't be for at least 2 years if I have to finish my EE degree before going to Columbia. But if they'll just accept a transfer of my credits then it still wouldn't be until Fall 2010

The job title of that sort of person is "Acoustician" or "Architecural Acoustician." These guys do everything from studio design to sound system design.

A couple of them:

RPG Diffusor Systems (http://www.rpginc.com/index.htm)

Walters-Storyk (http://www.wsdg.com/)
