I recently purchased a set of Vintage JBL fr a 77 years old gentleman, the story start fr last year I went to local (Toronto,Canada) garage sale and the gentleman was selling his stuffs fr the basement, he took the pictures he want to sell and posted on his garage door.

I noticed that there was a Mcintosh MR78 sitting there and asked him if he want to sell, but his answer is "NO", I then keep his home address in mind and hope he will change his mind later...

This year I went back to him and asked him the same question, he then ask me to give my phone # to him and he will think about it, just before I turn around and ready to go to next garage sales, he told me that he have a HUGE speakers in the basement and was custom build in 80s which he got this fr his friend when his friend need some money .

I went to the basement and "WOW", the speakers are 50Hx19Dx25W, with the mint 375/2309/2310 on top and 075/2121/LE15A in the speaker the crossover are N7000 and LX5,also it have a seperate "250HZ ferquency dividing network.
his system also with MINT SAE XXXpreamp /XXXIB power amp , both with wooden cages. Of course the MR78 also inclurded,(with some bubbles on the face plate. otherwise it is in excellent shape.

I asked hime how much he want for ALL, he told me that he paid his friend 2500 in 80s and he paid 600 for the tuner. He need to talk to his son first and will let me know later, his son will check on the internet and friends too.

Couple days later I called him up and he want 2750, and we finally end up with 2500, about USD1800., seems not bad.

I took everything home and all JBL in excellent shape but LE15A and 2121 need to replace the surround (after 20 years ,I think is normal???)

Am I paid too much or not, what you think the CURRENT MARKET PRICE on this package???Am I lucky or STUPID???

Heck no, that's not bad. Sounds like this was sort of a "home-built early-model 4343", in essence. How could that be bad, for less than $2000?

Regards,
Gordon.

just order the surround kits and plan to repair the LE15A and 2121 ASAP , can't wait....

What I don't understand is the internal wire on the 075 is brown LAMP CORD wire, 2121 with the regular speaker cable (copper with transperent jacket), the LE15A and 375 use the very TINY wire.

???

hoto, when you rebuild the systems, you should use good quality wiring for all the drivers. Some people use really exotic stuff, it's obviously a personal choice and dependant on the size of your bank acount.

You might want to check out Canare wire products, it's easy to work with. They have a selection of various gauges at very reasonable prices, I can let you know where to find it in the Toronto area. Drop me a PM.

Hi, it's me again....

I saw a pair of 077 (8ohms) local and like to have advise about it is a good idea to replace my 075 with the o77, and I am not sure if my 075 is a 16ohms, if it is OK to change , is the 16ohm/8ohm really matter??

Hey, hoto...

Giskard has posted on this, I believe - and my memory is the impedance noted on the foilcal is not very definitive. Most (all?) of these ring radiators have similar impedance, if measured (DCR). I'll bet you would be fine doing this, and should appreciate the change.

Did you get the surrounds done?

Yes

I have the surround replaced and it sounds really really good, I have the S3100 suppose for my HIFI room, but now I am going to use the S3100 for my AV room, and keep this JBL for HIFI....

:) The 077īs are so much better, specially with modern recordings that have more VHF content; Pls let us know when You are finished.

BTW: I would mount the 077īs from the inside out, just for looks.

As Bo mentioned, don't worry about the nameplate impedance, but you may want to either build your own or track down a pair of N8000s (home version), or 3106 (pro version).

Here is the schematic: http://www.jblproservice.com/pdf/Network%20Schematics/3106%20Network.pdf

This crossover was designed specifically for the 077/2405 where as your existing crossover the N7000 will work but was designed for the 075.

that reminds me that I've always wanted to ask. What's the difference between having the slats angling down or angling up? I guess if the slats angle up it might catch more dust..... but otherwise? Anyone know?

cheers

:) If You angle them up, "supposedly" it raises the height of sound, I have tried

them all ways, but "hip" people would invert them, with no real difference; but then You know my opinion about "-philes", :bs: .
