Any of you ever seen copper dust caps on JBL's before? Did JBL use them from the factory? The cone # is 21032.

That might not be a JBL cone job,,the outer surround looks awfully big.

Hey, Maron,

That's what I was thinking, too. Take care, and God Bless!

Yes I have. That is not actually copper but copper colored. Those are most likely late 60,s vintage.

That cone looks to be real JBL to me as well.:bouncy:

The cone is paper all the way up to the surround. There is a wide coating over the surround and onto a good portion of the paper cone. Probably why it's still connected today.

Thank you. I thought the serial #31999 would show up better in the picture than it did. Any idea as to the reason why they used that color dust cover instead of the silver color?

This was discussed once before, it might be something that JBL did for Fender. The cone and edge doping look like original JBL style to me.

The silver color you refer too is the natural color of the dome. I think the coating that imparts a copper color to the dome is meant to tone down the high freq. from the driver.:blah:

Nope color will not tone down any high frequencies,, Fender baskets were painted orange,,Purple baskets were painted for Heil.

Look at the pictures - the baskets aren't painted copper - the pix show a copper Dust cap.

Perhaps it's a coloured Aquaplas like material?

Yup, just got back from the NY AES show where I debuted a new near field monitor system I designed.

As to the orange color dust cap, I haven't a clue; we certainly didn't do it while I worked there. Tony Lowe would probably know about this.

Finally, this message from Mix Magazine:

"Subject: Trident HG3 Monitors selected as AES Hit!
Mix has been reporting on major audio/music tradeshows for more
than 30 years, and we like to acknowledge some of the more innovative
products we’ve found at these events. This year, Trident’s HG3 monitors
were selected by the editors of Mix as one of the Top-20 hits of
AES 2009, as reported online and in the November 2009 issue.

Congratulations on creating a hit product. We look forward to discovering
more of these from you in the months and years to come. Keep ’em coming!

And Scott Dorsey had this to say:
"BEST SOUND IN SHOW
------------------
Trident Audio Developments was showing off a pair of small nearfield
monitor speakers called the HG3, and they actually sounded good. It
wasn't prone to any of the painfully obvious issues that most small
monitor designs are. Now, I've only heard them under show floor
conditions and not in a proper room, but they definitely show enough
promise that I am going to go out and give them a listen."

Gotta love the rotating/removable baffle! Great idea. Not small but packing a bunch of bi-amp power. And made in the USA! I hope they do well and that I'll have a chance to hear them someday.

And you don't sound like a dork! You sound, and look, like the voice of experience that you are.

Good luck.

I have owned a lot of D120's, and I had several in Blackface Fender amps...never saw one like that before. I have also seen a TON of Fender amps with D120s in them (archival pics), and you also saw the silver dome shining through the Fender grill. I am not saying it is not possible, but I have never seen one in my experience.

There is a pair of them in the '65 Twin Reverb I have. One is serial #31999 the other is #32041. There are no tell-tale signs of them ever being reconed. I'm glad you pointed out that others have seen simular ones before. Most people that look at them say they aren't real JBL's because they don't have silver dust caps. Now I have more insight. Thank you.

I have a 1970 Fender Aries amp with four factory-original JBL D-120F 12-inch speakers. All of them have the copper-colored dust cap.

Correction: it's a Libra, rather than an Aries.
