well 'by me' actually... ;)

i have accumulated most drivers necessary for an "Augspurger" type of monitor...

2 pair TAD 1601As
pair of 2440, various horns to use
350 Hz Edgar or
medium sized 2" McCauley lens horns (20" i think)
or i could go down to 1" and used a pair of Fostex H425s I have...

(my understanding is that the 2" drivers will have less distortion,
all things being equal  did i just say that? )

pair of ring radiators

thoughts on using a 10" or 12" in the middle, a'la 4350/5?
i bet it's likely a dramatic improvement...

i plan on using active crossovers, at least at first...
and if I am happy with that, why change, right?

can i pretty much use the dimensions of 4350/4355,
as a 'good' guide to follow, size/bracing wise?

Is it worthwhile to do add the complexity of woofers toed/folded in?
(and i suppose that would limit me to certainly excluding the 10" or 12")

as discussed here...
http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=12506

any thoughts? pointers?

the initial thinking on my part is to build out of mdf, and skin with high quality ply, then veneer or paint (likely paint)...

thanks for any pointers/input...

off to do some related reading....

As usual I would not encourage the use of MDF , hovever in a big box like that I would advocate using 1" baltic for the main box and use 1/2 or 5/8 MDF as panel damping pads. Not structural but almost the size of the panel involved.
These I would attatch using visco elastic adhesive to form a constrained layer.
There is a previous discussion on this and as I recall Ian McKenzie is going this route. He has product info I'm sure.
These boys are going to be weighty !! Good luck with your project.

by all means stick with the larger 4" coil drivers. the lower distortion and ability to mate with various horns without anomalies is important. you might want to install coated 2445 dia's ( aka 2450SL ) to further smooth-en out the sound.

Forget the 15" toe-in unless you have a VERY particular sweet spot you need to focus on and in that case be expected to play measurement games.

Any of the newer 10's ( 2123, 2012, etc ) would perform as well as the older 2202's in your app.

Make the cabs out of real nice 3/4 birch plywood and THEN add a 1/4 to 1/2 skin out of a veneered plywood for the finish you want. Ribs on the inside and the usual cleats. I am building a set for a client this winter and will post details.
