4530,4520 and more

Hello,

Did anyone have a pair of 4530 or 4520
for Home HiFi and can tell me something
about his (Erfahrung, sorry)...doen`t know the english word.
I compared a 2390 Horn-Lens and
the 2397 Wood-Horn both with
2441 compression driver.
So i can tell the 2397 is much more
better than the old Hartsfield Horn-Lens.
It sounds soft, you càn`t hear that a horn
is working.
Years ago a professional made a frequency
response diagram and it run within +- 2dB
600-9000 Hz.
I think this one of the best JBL horns you can get.
Crossovers are 800 and 6000 Hz to a 2205A
and a 2402H.
Also the 2402 is much more louder than a 2405
and i have to decrease him about 12 dB.

I own two 4530 since several years and used them with 2390, 2395 and 2397 and I agree with you....the 2397 sounds best.
But I also have the experiancies (Erfahrung) that a 4530's got a very unsteady frequency response between 100Hz and 500 Hz. The rear loaded horn has problems with comb filter effects from the horn reflections but with some equalizing the bass is very dry and powerful to about 45 Hz. The 4520 is a lot better.

My last tests with 2390 are very good.....I like also this sound but its less HiFi then the 2397. The main thing is to use the 2441 instead of the 2440 driver....a lot more reality.
YES... The 2402 is a lot louder (5dB) then the 2405, but cuts at 12kHz. You loose the higher efficiency of the 2402 with the equalizing for some more "crispening" heights.

Because sound is going to eat all other conposants
the new concept is very high output

Yes, I had some custom built 4530's in the late 70's, with 2225's in them.
I grew out of them fairly quickly as I soon missed the low bass, as well as a fairly pronounced drop in response around 100-150 hertz or so, from the phase cancalations. It was loud, but you can get a much smoother sound with a ported box half the size that goes deeper. The tradeoff is efficiency, of course. I ended up with 2235's ported fairly soon, and to quote another member"it got out of hand from there", although not to the same degree as some, I am sure. I just couldn't afford to!
Back then, some guys used the 4520 for live sound, where they fairly shined with paired E140's or 2225's in them. But, soon enough the JBL ported 18" 2240's took over, and very nicely.
But, whatever you like, go for it.
IMHO, though, a ported box is far superior, and more accurate for home listening.
