can anyone comment on the sonic difference between

the home unit and the pro monitor?

it seems that 4301s are rarer and more expensive, but are they that much better?

There is a brightness adjustment on a 4301b. Neith sound that great and I have a pair of both... If you want something that size look at a pair of L20t's.:)

The 4301B had ferrite drivers, which the L19A's also did.

The older L19's had alnico magnets. I doubt they would have sounded different to the L19a/4301B but the old Decade woofers were susceptible to demagging if driven too hard, which could see them losing as much as 1.5dB output (possibly 3dB?). An ideal amp for the L19 would probably be a 30-watt receiver of the type common in the seventies. Not sure if networks differed but if you dig deeper below you may find the answer:

The crossovers are not the same.

There is a brightness adjustment on a 4301b. Neith sound that great and I have a pair of both... If you want something that size look at a pair of L20t's.:)The L19 and 4301 are still completely serviceable while the 18Ti, L20T, L20t3, XPL90A, 4406 and XPL200A are not.

JBL discontinued the poly-coned C8R115H-1 kit in the early part of this decade.

The performance of the L19 and 4301B is greater than the sum of the parts.

But is the LE-26 serviceable/replaceable?

Compared to the black L19 my 4301B are blue :p but that doesn't affect the sound :o:

Amazing sound vs size ;)

I bought a pair of L19's recently and used them briefly with a friends t-amp (around 8 watts). Despite the obvious volume limitations, I found the sound very enjoyable, with a nice bouncy bass. That said, the LE-26 didn't have quite the air and detail of something like a 044 or 035ti. I would need to listen again with a suitable amp before making any further comments.

Have not heard 4301b's, as yet

Amongst my collection of various JBL's, I have a pair of 4301BE's (self powered units), which I wouldn't sell or swap for ANYTHING.
Even my mate with a pair of constantly revised 4340's (amongst an amazing collection of other stuff) is now obsessed with getting a pair after an extended listening period with a pair of 4301B's.
L19's are cool, and cheap, but as stated before the XO's are different, and you can tell if you're lucky enough to do an A/B.
4301's aren't all that dear in the US. Hang out for some, you'll be so glad you did.
They can be found for less than $200 for good ones.
They look better, sound better, and just 'feel' better.
.... and there's something about that blue. (... although there are black ones about too.)
I've used mine 'as is', with the built-in 6001 amps, with T-Amps, a Tube Amp, and even a Phase linear 700 II, and a Crown DC300 with magical results.
Even being as low powered as what they are, they can deliver an outstanding result and a high degree of SPL.
.... BUT, I'd buy a couple of spare LE26 Tweeters just in case.
For a 'baby' monitor they more than do the job.
Of course there's always something better, but then the price rises exponentially.

Cheers all. :)

With seven (7) pairs of 4301B I guess you could say it's a qualified yes that I like them. 3 1/2 pairs are on duty in my surround system and another pair are used in my second system that sees heavy use. Re the crossovers, someone correct me if I'm wrong, the 4301 and 4301B used the same crossover. The L19/L19a used a different crossover. I picked up a donated pair of 4301 cabinets from a Conn. LH member with no speakers and installed 116H woofers and LE26 tweeters. The performance vs size ratio is very high IMO and it seems to be the same feeling for many other owners of this small jem of a JBL speaker. I have to get off my duff and send Zilch a pair of the 4301B crossovers to rebuild, from others that have had it done the update brings the performance of the 4301B up a noticable notch or two. As for the L19/L19a I had a pair years ago, also liked their performance, gave them to my brother, his daughter now has them on Nantucket and will stay in the family for another generation to enjoy. Just something about that JBL blue grill cloth and walnut veneer that makes the 4301B a keeper.

Should of mentioned the crossover listed for the 4301 and 4301B is the 3103, same crossover for both models. The cabinets/grills are slightly different but with the 116H woofer and LE26 tweeter my 4301 should sound the same as the 4301B.

I donīt know how L19īs sounds but 4301īs yes.
Clear, smooth highs and incredibly tight deep bass for the size.

4301B 7 speaker surround deployment sounds excellent. Now if I can replace the two Velodyne ULD15 subs with two JBL B380 subs I'd be much happier. Next choice would be two Sumo subwoofers that used the 2235H. If all else fails I have two 2235H ready to go into "custom" cabinets if some ever show up for sale.
