...went to an IMAX cinema this weekend with the misses.

The sound system was outstanding. Dynamic range was great, sound was very balanced and complete - no holes over the entire spectrum.

Anyway, I assume these were JBL cinema components being run by some mega SS amps.

...the show was not large seating about 200. We sat about 12 rows in at the center.

I would love to peak behind the screen some day.

This is very cool! Thank you for posting the photos and links. A few years ago I found a website that said the subs used in IMAX theaters (at the time) were 8 2245H's in a huge slot-loaded cabinet with 4 of them firing towards another 4 of them. The picture looks like what was described, but the drivers don't look like 2245H's. Or maybe they were custom made with rubber surrounds so IMAX wouldn't have to worry about foam rot?

According to the IMAX cinema PPS speaker shown it has 4 on one side and 4 on the other. No mention of firing at each other.By the way the pictures are from an Imax theater in California. That was very easy to find.

Glad you like the pictures. Also notice the enclosure with only the horns. Very difficult to get to for maintenance.

Actually the images of behind the IMAX screen is India I found discovered those images at least 3 years ago. There is at least 10 or 12 images in total showing the crew climbing around the scaffolding.

Yeah what’s the name of the IMAX cinema then?

I shared by posting the images on few sites as they where very hard to find under normal keywords.

Does IMAX still use film? They should be the first cinemas to go digital.

But would anyone make a digital projector that would approach the resolution of large 70mm film frame? I doubt it.

15 perf 70mm IMAX film is pure film which has grain structure. Still it’s the projection playback rate of 24fps I think digital will have higher frame rate playback resulting in stable image.

I guess digital will minimize grain structure because when we see real life its nothing but light/shadow colours that makes up the image.

Theirs more facts here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX)

As to still use film I guess they do as they have large catalogue of titles going back many years. Maybe those titles will be scanned using high resolution for digital IMAX cinema projection in future years?

Digital dose have its means of reducing production costs as IMAX 70mm 15perf is very costly!

Not meaning to hijack or anything, but Science North's sister attraction site, called "Dynamic Earth" also boasts the world's largest coin, the "Big Nickel", weighing in at close to 13,000 kilograms (approximately 13 tons) and nine metres (30 feet) high. I'm only about 3 1/2 hours driving time away from this.

Lake Ramsey, just outside of Sudbury, was also where the original Hardy Boys series of books was first written.

Sorry 'bout the hijack. Back to topic.

They have an experimental digital system in Japan that tries to mimick real life: involves daylight-like brightness/contrast range, more advanced 3D sound, high frame rate (which increases realism)/super hi Res (cameras already available), surround screen. Disneyland uses 48fps according to your link (OK for short shows)(US digital TV is 60 fps for some sports shows-looks more natural w/ zero motional artifacts)
Meanwhile DLP still don't have a 4k chip? Would need even higher Res for IMAX quality projector (Wiki)

I think the highest frame rate was the Douglas Trumbull ShowScan which filmed and projected back the same film rate 60fps in special cinemas.

The system retired late 1990’s I think. It also had special sound delivery system as well. http://www.showscan.com/

Strange I was looking at the my cat last night under very low light level in the kitchen and the detail in fur with some percale light coming in from the streetlights outside and yet the way it looks is so pure.

That mid-horn I'm suspecting is the 2392, but I think Its a cone midrange, due to FT member stating that the driver faces into the box ( mounted backwards ) and I've heard a blown LF in the 2way system. Sounds like a blown cone driver rather than a compression driver.

We could put an end to the guessing and talk to Paul Peace Jr, of Auditoria and see what he has to say about these speakers. I believe he is the one who designed them.

This is the Omnimax at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago not Navy Pier. Navy Pier Imax is a flat screen. How do I know?? It's my theatre!! We revamped our theatre with the Danley Sh96's and SH50's. I hate to say it but they DO sound better than the JBL's we replaced!! How do I know? I've worked in the theater as chief projectionist for 20 years. Don't get me wrong the JBL's sounded great and took alot of abuse without fail for 2 decades. Will the Danleys hold up as well? You'll have to check back in a few years. The subs are amazing. They began walking all over the back of the dome and had to be bolted down. So far they have taken the abuse of Space Shuttle launch audio. They shake the lights in my office through several layers of cement block.

But when one fails you lose a big chunk of your theater.
I have mixed feelings about these high power amplifiers, I keep doing my installs with more, less powerful amps. Sometimes I use one amp by driver just for this reason.
When you have an install with 12 amps and one fails, it's much less noticeable.

Thanks Jim!

the 2245 were replaced due to foam rot I'm guessing?

Actually I think only 3 of the 12 were bad. But yes foam rot.

Thanks again for the photos,

in the clusters, is that an 18" with 10" mid? Some IMAXs used a 12 crossed with an 18, and some used an 10 crossed to a 18"

I guess it depended on the size of the room.

Well I thought I’d post some controversial Bournemouth IMAX pictures. Sorry there is no access to the cinema, just the outside view and close ups with the camera placed against the glass.

The top picture view is looking down Bath Road snobby Royal Bath Hotel to the left. I really can’t see how now this IMAX is blocking the view?

There are other buildings on Bath road that are twice as large as the IMAX its just a town of IMAX cinema hates that would sooner watch there snoby snoty 50” flat screen in there living room…good luck to them!

I’ve had a real positive change of heart :) since going to that asshole IMAX demolition party :barf: made up by a total bunch of Bournemouth wankers! :biting:

In the background is the BIC that is just as ugly as the IMAX its not what’s like on the outside that matters its what’s on the inside that counts!

The Bournemouth cinemas on Westover road Odeon ABC just don’t do it for me anymore.

A few more views inside the Bournemouth IMAX cinema! Most other recent pictures only show the outside. I guess the Bournemouth Echo’s IMAX hates photographs just didn’t think? If you place a camera to the glass you can get a reasonably good picture! Bunch of Muppets they are!:biting:

The top image is the side entrance to the IMAX that is also the exit as the exit doors are to the right side of the picture.

Stairway leading down to the main entrance that as single narrow corridor leading to the IMAX auditorium.

2nd 3rd 4th and 5th picture is the main front entrance to the Bournemouth IMAX.

I wonder what the IMAX auditorium really looks like now? I guess the screen as also been removed along with the seating, its obvious the projector and sound rack and loudspeakers have also been removed leaving a hollow empty shell. sigh
