View Full Version : Garbage in the power line? I'm fairly new to this.

Hello,

I recently noticed that when I'm close to my speakers, I can hear a slight hum. It's not a typical AC hum, rather it sounds like something else riding on the sine wave. I can also hear the very slight *tick* *tick* *tick* from our electric fence. Strangely, the ticking only shows up in the right channel tweeter.

First, I'm wondering what I can do about this. Some sort of filter on the main power cord? I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, as I'm currently a rather strapped college student who needs to save his money for other things. I do have a ton of components laying around, and I have a lot of experience building things.

Second, why just the right channel? I noticed that the right channel sounds a bit better overall. I'm currently running a pair of 4301Bs and have yet to re-cap the crossovers. I'm hoping that will even them out.

If it makes any difference, all my amplification is done with tubes. I'm using a Dynaco PAS-3 pre-amp (new power supply, tone controls bypassed) feeding a modified Magnavox power amp chassis. Both the pre and power amps have been re-capped

Thanks for any input!

Electric fence, where is the power supply for the fence located?
Electric fences use a 5000v short duration pulse, this pulse will travel along the fence. The fence will act like an antenna and broadcast this pulse into the air where it can be picked up by your Hi-Fi system, I'm not sure why it is only in one speaker. The pulse could also be picked up by the house wiring and enter your system. Maybe one of the power line filters could help.
