Red Seal Wax?

Greetings,

Anyone familiar with Red Seal Wax? I've had a couple of inquiries on whether my Olympus feautre the Red Seal Wax.

I saw on an expired ebay auction for some 075 tweeters and it mentioned they still had the red seal wax.

If you can clue in a clueless brutha, I'll sure appreciate it.

Older JBL drivers all had them from the factory like these.

The photo doesn't really show them off, but they have tiny JBL initials in them.

Thanks Mr. Widget. It seems as though the only way to tell is to pull the driver. However, I am reluctant to do so since it appears none of the drivers or crossovers have ever been removed. I hate to tamper with what appears to be the original condition.

If you tamper with them and show the buyer that they have their seals intact, you are likely to get more money for them. On the other hand if they have red wax seals they are most likely in need of diaphragm replacement due to the fact that the aluminum diaphragms wear out. The collectors and the eBay world don't seem to know this one though.

Also for what it is worth,i have talked to a local retired jbl reconer
and he told me jbl supplied them the wax and tools to replace the seals after they were done with repairs.

I had a pair of LE-85s repaired at the factory in 1977. By then they were no longer replacing the seals.

I believe most if not all HF drivers had the seals in the 60's and early 70's. I know the various L-100 woofers had them where the frame was screwed together. I am not sure if any of the 15" woofers had any exposed screws to get a seal.

My repair tech is JBL trained and certified. He says he has never heard of JBL providing the wax and jbl initial tool for authorized techs. How far back are we talking here for this practice?

all I can tell you.....my original 2441 and 2420, bought in 1979 at OCS, got no wax.

The Signature series JBL HF drivers had the initialed red wax seals, the pro series did not! Guess they figured consumers would never really blow drivers like the pros! However, I have only been using JBL Pro series since 1978 so earlier models may have been different!

Hey Scott,

I thought that too. Take a look at the photo I posted of the 2420. It is Pro and it has red wax...

I think the wax seals were discontinued in the mid 70's.
