Japan only S101 - anyone know about it??

Searching the web I came across this...

Looks like the 1960's Lancer 101 (or is it the C56 Dorian?), but sold in the 1980s with very different components. I'm interested to see the crossover schematic, and searching the JBL site nothing shows up. Are these Japan-only products designed and built over there, with no real connection with JBL USA?

Export only. essentially a 4425 with the 40X90 horn instead of the 100X100.

I have made a number of these type boxes for restaurant / club installs and the combination works pretty well.

without the funky translation or marble of course..

I expect that a different horn would mean a different crossover than the 4425. I did a search and found that same horn and driver were used in the G-732 cabinets.

I always thought they looked interesting. During the 80's and 90's there was a strong demand for the original Lancer 101 in Japan. They loved the fact that it was a small speaker that had a compression driver and horn in it. A pair of Lancer 101's and an SA600 or SA660 integrated amp was the ultimate compact system. I think JBL caught on to this and figured they could introduce a modern version of the speaker.

I can see the appeal in the size - the L55 and L65 are pretty close if not identical in size and those are nice sized boxes with decent bass performance (ignore the 'end-table' looks for a moment...). One person can lift them too!

I did more Google searching for this model and it showed up on the Japanese Harman/JBL website, almost looking like a current model but it could have been past models I was looking at. I was trying to find the service spec sheet for it to see what the crossover looked like (no luck). I also came across 4 or 5 for sale ads, all through the audio re-sellers that have lots of old JBL gear. They all had foam rot so 20 years old or so is about right. They really seem to like the wood lattice grill, which must be machine made somehow - stamped or pressed?

JBL used to claim that the fretwork grilles were hand made but I think they are too perfect to have been made by hand. Yes they love the fretwork grilles for some reason. Any speaker that had them is at least somewhat sought after in Japan.
