Will a pair of Altec A6/MRII594 be suited for hifi or is it mainly useable for movies?

It's a setup like this one:

Yes excellent speaker .You will need a large room . The 288 driver with mantaray MRII 594 horn is an excellent combination.I heard it in a 70 mm 5 main speaker cinema theater .

That sounds good :) But a large room could be a problem, what do you mean by "large"? In fact it is two pairs that is being sold only "as one", so I'm thinking of useing a pair also in the back in my surround setup or sell one of them.

Do you have any idea of the value if both drivers and cabinets are in good condition? They are not a "giveaway", so it would be nice to know if they are overpriced or not.

I'm also quite new to Altec, so how do these compare to JBL? What JBL is comparable?

BTW: I already have a 3182/8182 subwoofer to use in the lows, I think that could be a nice combination :)

I was just told that the driver was 908-8b and not 288-8k :( I would guess this is not good news, or is it OK and don't mean the world for the value/sound?

BTW: I can also get 902-16 instead of 908-8b.

Baldrick,

With the 902's you lose a little value, but they are not bad at all.

That MR horn seems to garner a lot of attention on ebay, and I just saw a set go for about $300 usd for a pair.

You will not have no problem running them on your room if it is of decent size, but I would not ove rdo it with the volume.......

You have a great find there.......

If I decide to buy them I will buy bought set of drivers, I think the 902 comes with a 511 horn but as far as I've understood they are compatible with both horns.

How is the 908-8 compared to 288-8 or 802-b?

I will probably take a look on them with the seller later today, so I can see myself what condition they really are in.

To check the drivers if they are OK, is it OK to just measure the impedance?

802 and 902 are very simmilar, magnet change from alnico to ferrite is the biggest difference to the best of my knowledge, different model designations have different phase plugs, etc also...

I've just came back from a visit to the seller, without buying, at least yet. Unfortunately they were not what I was expecting them to be.

The cabinets where black and with corner protections made of metal, like many older PA cabinets. The seller said they were like this from Altec, could this be correct? I've only seem them in "Altec grey" previous.

Some drivers and woofers are broken, don't know how many...

The 902-16 was not with 511 or something like that, inface it was the supertweeter 902-16HF and looked like this (but again, some drivers were broken):

So the value decreased VERY much since I don't know how many of the speakers that actually works. I've mad him an offer that is much lower than the orginal price, so we'll see what hapens.

those tweeters are pretty highly desirable.....
