The JBL T/S sheets have X-Max not X-Mech. One is still linear travel the other is before damage. If you hang the coil on the top plate kiss it good buy.

Why are you asking??

Xmax = 7.87mm when Xmech = ???

Why are you asking??

Rob:)for my technical understanding about the mechanical limits of this great driver. Is failure mode due to

- Spider crashing on top plate
- Voice coil bottoming on back plate
- Voice coil coming out of gap above core
- Physical limitation of cone.

and to estimate the max power handling capacity (peak) before mechanical damage without any consideration regarding the distortion level ;)

Asside from curiosity you shouldn't be running any drivers beyond X-max. To run them to X-mech is asking for trouble.

Who cares how they fail? The point is to be a responsible owner and not abuse them to the point where they do fail. They are vintage drivers and should be treated so.

the dynamics of a recorded sound track shows sometimes some surprise :dont-know

Rob:)My question is precisely to avoid such inconvenience :baby:

Understood. Just use JBL's old common sense approach if you see excessive cone movement either highpass filter them or turn it down.

It's not like you can plan for what's on a new recording. Just don't go loud the first time through.

Agreed, a subsonic filter is always a good idea with a vented cabinet.
I have several songs with strange very very *very* low frequency contents (some prodigy remixes for example) that I would not want to play loud on an unprotected louspeaker!

but ....

anyone knows Xmech (one way) parameter of the 2213H woofer ? :p

(in mm or inch)

by mechanical design considerations (voice coil, top plate, centering, ...) i think it'll be possible to estimate X-mech ... :help:

taking appart cone/spider/surround behavior at high excursion level and according to a picture from a cutaway of the 123A magnet, we can imagine that the first X-mech mode of failure is due to spider crashing on the top plate (backward excursion). This picture shows a X-mech around the value of the thickness of the top plate (actually a bit higher)...

I would tend to only worry about Xmax. If you are going past this point the life of the driver is not going to be very long. When approaching X- mech the worst thing that can happen is that the voice coil jumps out of the gap and hangs on the top plate. You may get away with it once or twice but ultimately the coil will fail and you will need a recone. IMO one would be wise to stay away from X-max and X-mech. The number is really quite pointless to know because once you have figured it out you will be opening up your wallett for a recone kit.:)

Allan.totaly agreed ;)

but just before the voice coil jumps out of the gap i think the spider should have crashing itself on the top plate :banghead:
In that case we'll hear some poping noise before voice coil damage :screwy:

(my goal is not running 2213H to Xmech (even Xmax) but technical understanding on this driver)
