Always loved that one too , "lets move before they raise the parking rates" :D and corny as it is ..Skynard's "FreeBird"

was cleaning the spare BR the other day and found a long lost box of abt 100 old LP's ..vinyl nirvana , plus a pair of Altec 8in coaxials and some pristine AR4x's.

Sunny outside , me and the Fuji (the blue mtn bike in my avatar) going on a vinyl safari after lunch , looking at some JBL P-20's also.

Allow me to add Fleetwood Mac's version to the "Black Magic Woman" entry. Or does that take us out of the "Rock" category?

FM is such a great song, I am partial to the original version as opposed to the newer version found on the Steely Dan Gold cd. The album has the original version, the guitar work is much more tasteful.

Wont get fooled again, the version off of the Kids are alright soundtrack is probably my favorite, a bit more raw.

Is there a limit to the list as far as number of songs...100 +? that would be much more challenging.
Have fun!

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by George Harrison, Beatles White Album featuring Eric Clapton on Guitar.

Numerous other releases of this song exist by Harrison and Clapton, but the White Album is still the best.

Yeah, anything by Zep really.

I have really got into their back catalogue lately and it is savage. I never appreciated Bonham until now. The JBL's really let you hear his great kick drum work...just listen to Good Times, Bad Times - all done with a single kick drum!

For the "storming right out of the box" category of Rock, "Day After Day." If I had a radio show, the first song I would ever play.

The deep and more musical category, "The English Roses."

Honorable mentions, "Talk of the Town" and "Message of Love."

All from my "can have only one Rock CD Desert Island pick", Pretenders II. If there is an afterlife and I am there, I want Chrissie Hynde and Jimmy Scott to get a band back together.

If it is fair to step towards The Blues, anything by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac or the Kirwin stuff from Kiln House and Future Games for me beats anything else (except some Santana, which sometimes equals it).

Is anyone going to stick up for the Joshua Tree / Achtung Baby U2 era? I could make a case for that. ;)

Damn, "Regret" from New Order...

I don't really play favourites but my favorite rock music comes from the late 70's and 80's and comes right through to the present time. I got more interested in music when the musicians actually learnt how to play or they figured out that they could play so they made it more evident. But as a professional guitarist/singer I lean more towards guitar oriented rock.....Peter Frampton, Kiss, Van Halen, Queen, Def Lepard, John Petrucci, Bon Jovi, Jo Satriani, Creed and so on. But no clear favourite song. But if push came to shove I would go with Van Halens "5150"

I can't get away without Neil Young 1970's stuff. Tonight's the Night, Zuma, On The Beach, American Stars & Bars...

"Like a Hurricane," Cortez the Killer," "Albuquerque," "Ambulance Blues," "Danger Bird," "Stupid Girl," "Drive Back," "Tired Eyes," ...

And out of left field, "Sister Ray" by The Velvet Underground eats Van Halen (who I love) for breakfast. This take no prisoners ditty makes even speed metal sound flaccid and weak; I picture every heavy metal band playing Vegas with suits and ties after I listen to "Sister Ray." The White Light/White Heat album, Most of side 2. Because I heard this first I have never been able to listen to Metallica or anything like them.

Like you, I almost always prefer people who can really play really well. But most good rock players play boring, stupid shit. In the end it is about the feeling, not how many notes or how hard it is to play. It's about the music, not the playing. "The play is the thing..."

I love Jaco Pastorius but his "Donna Lee" is a triumph of playing ability and the most boring, pointless thing he ever did. His parts on "Refuge of the Roads" for Joni Mitchel have 1/30th as many notes and one hundred times the feeling and emotional impact.

As for "Sister Ray," when I was an Art student (at that time actually) the faculty and the students agreed on one thing. If everyone walking into your show likes it and says how nice it is, it is crap. If almost everyone is disgusted, or angry, or upset or disturbed, you are on to something. Anyone could give them what they already like. Raise the bar, create something better, and they will grow with it eventually if they stick around. I saw the Velvets live and believe it or not they could really play. And they played exactly what they wanted to hear, not what the audience came to drop acid to. They were artists, and damn good ones. They used instruments instead of paint brushes and had such a commanding presence that at least some of us knew we were in the same big room as something very special. I'll never forget it.

In a few words, "Sister Ray" bugs the hell out of straight people and leaves almost everyone else looking like a deer in the headlights. Most never catch up with it and that is OK. :) The band tried to help people get over with it, though. "I Heard Her Call My Name" serves as a nice warm up for it. And those who will never like "Sister Ray" or get it will have left the room before it starts.

Mona ? just yesterday I sat transfixed by QMS Mona ... thats a real earbuds/phones tune....runs 17/18 minutes

Of course Santana - Abraxas ...the. SWCB/BMW/GQ combo ...everyone regards it as "Black Magic Woman" , but it is actually 3 tunes strung together (Singing winds/Crying Beasts - Black Magic Woman - Gypsy Queen) .... the original of GQ by Gabor Szabo is some virtuoso playing too.

there are 3 Carlos wham wham whams in the last 90 seconds of GQ that always give me goosebumps .just b4 the great FB ending..:bouncy:...(original ver only).

Last year PBS rebroadcast the best of the 1969 "Johnny Cash Show" and Carl was on there just having a great time ....He made Clapton look like a cardboard cutout. (which didnt seem hard to do - even when he was in Traffic , Eric was considered a weak singer)

"Wonderland" by Big Country. Uniquely for me, I like the extended version even better. The rare song that is perfect in everything. Idea, execution, vocal, all instruments firing on all cylinders, silence as well as sound. Put together perfectly.

Their rhythm section was as good as any that ever played, and Stuart Adamson is very much missed by me as well. Another UK lost soul who came to America and died alone. Props to Bruce Watson as well.

Not me. I just picked up an album I'd almost forgotten about, from my "hazy" period in the early to mid '70s: Umagumma. It's a 2-CD set, one live and one studio. To be sure, you almost HAVE to be on dope to really "appreciate" the studio CD (as in, "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict"). Or at least it takes some getting used to; just turn all the lights off with only your audio equipment lights on, sit back and enjoy. :)

But the live CD still sounds terrific even when all brain synapses are functioning, including such classics as "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", Astronomy Domine", "Careful with that Ax Eugene" and "A Saucerful of Secrets". Pink Floyd was pioneering space rock with albums like this (and later, with Meddle) and even though it might not be to everyone's taste, it was very creative work.

However, for true hard rock which sounds best through vintage JBLs, I'd have to go with the more traditional stuff, like White Room (Cream), Dazed and Confused (Zep), Moodies, and live Who all of which have already been mentioned along with some other very good suggestions. :applaud:

HEY, MIKE!!

I resemble that remark, Lad!! ;):bouncy: I am listening to some fine Diana Krall, right now, and loving it! At 59, I may well be as old as your grandparents, too! ;);):D

But, as I former pro musician, for almost 30 years, I have a fairly eclectic taste in music, and like quite a few different styles. Hate rap, and not much into the most screaming of the Heavy Metal stuff. Other than that, I am open to most anything, and have a large music library, with all ends of the musical spectrum pretty well covered. But, ahhhhhhh, Diana Krall!! Oh, yeah, I like that. The bass player she has is absolutely great. Sounds fine on the new sub and the 4411's! Take care, and God Bless!

LOL Doc! :D Actually, I am very much enamored with Ms. Krall, and have most of her albums. Even more appealing is that many are available on SACD or DVD-A, with marvelous recording quality.

Like you, I enjoy a wide variety of musical genres, with jazz being one of my favorites for "serious" listening.

And at 59, you're almost exactly the age of my parents - hardly my granparents who (those that are fortunately still with us) are all in their 80's, God love them. :)

As a pro musician, what did you perform?

All the best,
- Mike

I recall a major Detroit radio station had a countdown several years back of what they considered the greatest R & R songs - No. 1 was:

Day in The Life - Beatles

Now as to my own vote - I'm surprised this one hasn't been mentioned - one of the most recognized & popular opening guitar riffs and always brings the house down :applaud: when performed live:

JOHNNY B. GOODE - Chuck "Duck Walker" Berry!

Morning, Mike, and All,

You asked about my musical career: I started in bands that played school parties, proms, Frat gigs, and such. Moved on to nightclub work, and from there, to the road. On the road, we mostly played Hotel lounges and bars, but later moved on to the clubs and casinos of Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. Along the way, we opened for some name acts, some quite famous, but never became famous, ourselves. Drugs took it's toll on much of the group, too, as we made more money, and played with more famous folks. Only myself and my room mate, our keyboard player, resisted the temptation.

In all my years as a musician, I was never tempted to try even a single drug, and I'm quite proud of that, actually. Some of those guys in the early bands are long dead from their excesses. Some of them eventually cleaned up the act and moved on to "real" life, where they were eventually successful. A few are still mired in drugs and drama, and their lives are more than a little pitiful, really, and quite disgusting. Sad deal, but hey, they made their own choices, and now are trapped by the consequences of their actions/choices. Hoisted upon their own petards, as the phrase goes.

My last musical adventure, was playing on the Harbor Cruise Boats out of San Diego. That was a hoot! Almost like playing at Disneyland, except the passengers were really the entertainment.... at least for us musicians!! <LOL!!> Man, did we get some characters on those cruises!! :D:applaud::D My last band was drug and drink free, and did not even smoke cigarettes. That made going to work a real pleasure, and I actually miss those days on the boats.

Back then, I played drums, trombone, Fluegabone, and all the Latin percussion stuff, and I was the lead vocalist in most of the bands of which I was a member. When playing the big venues, I was out front, as the lead singer, and we had another drummer. Now, in our Living History hobby, I play 18th century traditional stuff, on whistles and flageolettes, and that's really a ton of fun! Still keep the pipes up, a little, by singing ballads and traditional songs at our events, in The Sow's Ear Tavern, which we host for colonial participants.

So, that's about it for me. I miss playing music for a living, but to NOT miss the very negative effect that drugs eventually had on that entire scene!! Lost too many good friends back then, and to me, that made those dark days all a waste, and not the "fun, hazy days", that some seem to remember about their drug scene experiences. 'Nuff said.... Thanks for asking, and God Bless!

Hey, JBLRaiser,

Thanks, my Friend! Your comment is exactly what I have heard from very good friends who also survived that era unscathed. I appreciate your wisdom, and your experience, sometimes hard won, and that you have made yourself a better person from all that. Quite a few of my friends have done the same, and I'm very proud of them, too. The important thing, however, is not that I'm proud of them, but that they are proud of themselves!! Outstanding, sez I!! :applaud::applaud:

I do truly miss all of my friends who were not fortunate enough, nor lucky enough, nor blessed enough to have survived those days. In those 30 years of playing, I lost, at the minimum, two dozen close friends to drug fatality. To this day, I miss each one. But, I could not save them back then, even though I tried. Nor could anyone else. Some of those that did survive have thanked me, all these years later, for my efforts, though they hated me back then when it was all going on.

I do have some very funny rememberances of those days, too, which help to temper the pain of the losses incurred back then. I can tell you some stories of the road that will have you rolling on the floor in uncontrollable laughter!!! I still smile at the fun and funny times. But, in the end, the cost of admission was more than a little too high.

Remind me, however, to tell you about the time one of our trumpet players crapped his pants one night up on stage, going for a super high note!! It is truly an hilarious story!! Gotta go now, however, as Sweet Bride is flying in from her latest gig, and I've got a bit of cleaning to do before I head down the mountain to pick her up!! Talk to you later, my Friend, and God Bless, indeed!

Every Good Wish,
Doc

Now as to my own vote - I'm surprised this one hasn't been mentioned - one of the most recognized & popular opening guitar riffs and always brings the house down :applaud: when performed live:

JOHNNY B. GOODE - Chuck "Duck Walker" Berry!

Whenever I see one of these polls I'm struck by how many people seem to think that Rock and Roll started with the Brits and Hippies in the mid-late 60s and are either unaware or unappreciative of the 50s and early 60s American rockers; you'll see guitarists unaware of Scotty Moore, James Burton and Steve Cropper and drummers who have no idea who DJ Fontana, Earl Palmer, Al Jackson and Howard Grimes are. Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Bo Diddly and the Doo-Wop groups are often ignored.

Personally I think the Brits and Hippies screwed Rock and Roll up and by the 1970s the only decent bands were Mountain and Thin Lizzy. Until The Ramones came along and shook it up by going back to basics. And nobody beats the early rockers. Hell, Leslie Gore was better than Led Zeppelin.

Tom, I see the problem as most listeners not being familiar with the Chess/Checker/Argo catalog. How can you have any real perspective when you don't know Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Etta James...

I liked a lot of Led Zep, but I feel sorry for fans who think it started there. Or with The Beatles & The Stones. Lennon worshiped Gene Vincent and Mick & Keith dug Chess Blues artists more than anything else; Keith and Chuck Berry licks were inseparable.

Fats Domino is so talented he is all you need to hear to catch on.

Sure, but like studying art history to gain further appreciation, it helps to hear what your favorite musicians think is great, and where they came from. By the way, James Patrick Page thinks Les Paul understood and mastered it all, and before even I was born.

When Dr. John says he took a great lick I like from Guitar Slim, it makes me want to hear Guitar Slim. Isn't that a natural thing to do?

Yeah, some, so what? Doesn't negate what I said.

I was listening to Danny and the Juniors today doing "Let's Go to the Hop". Very simple arrangement; piano, electric bass, drums and the vocals. And more drive and pure Rock and Roll spirit than almost anything I've heard since, oh, 1965 or so. Rock and Roll was pretty much perfected by the early 1960s, everything that came after was reworking over the basics or sidetracking away from Rock and Roll.

Not that some of that later work wasn't good, Hell, Steve Jones's guitar solo on EMI by the Sex Pistols is one of the greatest ever. Most overwrought guitar "heroes" never approached the simple perfection of Jones's work.

For my money, though I own only one Led Zeppelin album, "Rock and Roll" pretty much encapsulates what rock music is all about, but it's a song that by its nature looks back to a "Golden Age," and in that Golden Age, there was Eddie Cochran, who died way too young in a freak London taxicab accident. His song, covered by many, most memorably, perhaps, by Humble Pie, "C'mon Everybody," summed up the spirit of classic rock'n roll:
Well, c'mon everybody, let's get together tonight.
I got a pocket fulla money, and ya know I'm gonna spend it right.
I been doin' my homework all week long,
Now the house is empty--my folks are gone,
So c'mon everybody."
Then came THE definitive guitar riff, often imitated but never surpassed. Ahhh, those were the days. But lest we wax overly nostalgic, we must remember that in the '60's, what had been "merely" a vehicle for teen angst and/or exuberance became, through the experimentation of the Beatles, King Crimson, The 13th Floor Elevators, and a host of others, a legitimate art-form. Nothing remains "pure," because if it did, it would be static and boring and would soon wither and die. We tend to resist change, but it's the only constant.

Hey Doc,

Thanks for sharing! Great story, though sad to hear of those who addictions eventually ruled their lives, and in some unfortunate cases took it far too soon. Glad you steered clear all these years!

Agreed....I've been catching some Muddy Waters on the XM ..he's the real deal , kinda funny...The theme time radio hour (Bob Dylans show) has reintroduced me to many on your list.....Bob seems also quite interested in the 20/30's era music and showcases it whenever possible..

A lot of early Stones & CCR work were covers of MW and HW(and dont forget Dale Hawkins !! )

The greatest collection of rock songs for headphones, hands down,
Dark Side of the Moon,Pink Floyd (Back in the day, "Any Colour You Like" and some green smokeable stuff. There goes the afternoon).

Santana-Evil Ways
Bachman Turner Overdrive-Takin' Care Of Business

As good as DSOM is ....I've put WYWH on multiple plays this week and is my fav among PF albums..:applaud:

and yes, TCOB is one that demands to be turned UP :D

Naw, the Pistols had it all over the Clash at that time, although the Clash has 'higher honor roll' classification. I saw the Clash in about 1980 in SF in some big hall and it was just a joke. Walked out...too over crowded and bad sound. But then those were the days of going from show to show and lookin' for chicks!:D

I know, it has nothing at all to do with the topic, but your last post reminded me of this:

Standels were the first guitar amplifiers that used JBL, (Lansing) speakers. These speakers were much costlier and much heavier than the cheaper and less efficient Jensens that Fender and Gibson were using, but were already standard in super hi-fidelity phonograph systems by the time that Bob Crooks put one in an amp in 1953. "It made all the difference in the world," is what Bob told me, "when I first heard that amp with that speaker in it, I said, That's the sound." Seven years later, after experimenting with almost every other kind of speaker, Fender finally relented and started putting JBL's in their top-of-the-line amplifiers too. Today, almost every brand of amplifier can be ordered with JBL's!!

Anything from Wanda Jackson. She is still touring around the world, 58 years after her first single in 1953. Then she toured with pubescent Elvis Presley and showed him how to treat a lady. I saw her a few years ago in Montreal in a concert organized by the local rockabillies and was impressed. She sure knows how to rock a church basement.

God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols

Sent Rock & Roll reeling & tumbling! 1976!:applaud:

Nah. Never mind the Sex Pistols. Here's the Clash.

As hip as the Pistols were, they also were nothing more than puppets from marketing maestro Malcolm McLaren. Which he made very clear with his movie "The great rock'n'roll swindle". While The Clash were musicians and they did more than one album... Even Bruce Springsteen admitted he wished he had the talent of The Clash. ;-)

And to those who pretend that the Sex Pistols invented punk, what a coincidence that their manager, Malcolm McLaren was also the last manager of the New-York Dolls in 1975, the band who, along with Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, were the original punks... But hey, Malcolm was a marketing genius as I mentionned.

1970 -- Walking down Tu Do Street listening to CCR Susie Q...

Hey G.I. *********

Oh geeze Tim ...I read this again and flashed to sitting on the Bee's doorsill , feet dangling in
110kt breeze (with monkeybelt on) and just a boppin' along cross the Delta to SusieQ or California Girls coming over the helmets phones courtesy of AFVN

After listening to the BluRay 5.1 WYWH last night on the Senns ...I'd nominate any of the 5 tracks.

This is coming from an 18 year old who has been listening to the 60's music all his life. My favorite would have to be Seger's Ramblin' Gamblin' Man. That song, I can just CRANK!!! I hate that new (c)rap that they play on the radio now a days.

I've been grooving to Harry Nilsson's "Jump Into the Fire" lately. It builds, fades and builds again, maintaining a high energy and interest level throughout.

They don't play music on the radio near me -
Talk talk, its only talk ...

All the good prog and rock stations in my area are gone -
I think WRNR out near Annapolis, MD is probably good -
but their signal doesn't reach my place -
even with antenna boosters & a rotor!

60's music is was got me thru the war (conflict ? police action ? whatever..). AFVN radio
(Armed Forces Vietnam) was a better rock station that what we have today
(and no damned car commercials) ..anyway,

its good to see an 18 y.o. appreciating some of the 60's tunes..it was quite an era ....my 30 y.o. son loves the punk/garage genre from then.

I made some little 12 inch narrow shelves that are wall mounted and next to the 3 active turntables in the home. I put the jackets up when playing the disks and can tell later what is still on the turntable.

The 3 currently displaying are : BS&T - Child is Father to the Man. 2. LedZep - first, and 3. Clash - Combat Rock.

Great track! I've always really liked Harry Nilsson and that song still sounds fresh as the day it was recorded. Here are some more by Harry that come to mind (not recorded as loudly as "Jump Into the Fire" so crank them up!)......

Harry had more talent in his little finger than many current day "retro" artists like Lenny Kravitz have in their entire body (nothing against Lenny)....

I always liked his "you broke my heart , you tore it apart, so f*ck you"

they don't write great lyrics like that anymore ...;)

Yeah, that's another classic from the "Son of Schmilsson" LP. I remember when I was a teenager we'd always give that particular track a little extra volume!!!
