ID this older Altec cabinet?

These were in a school gym. I'm told the kids decided they would make good targets for their basketballs. The 515B's took a few hits! :banghead:

The school removed the horns and brackets and kept them. If you look closely at the side of the cabinets, you can see where the horn bracket was mounted.

There appears to have been no crossover networks.

I'd like to know what model these cabinets are. Thanks for any help!

Wow, thanks. :applaud: They're definately the 614's. I searched this site for a while and couldn't find them.

Should I assume that the 515B's in the cabinets are also from 1949?

They don't look that old to me.

They look like 614 cabinets. The 614 was made for a 12" and the 612 for a 15" duplex.

Here are pictures of the 612 mounted with a 605 and a 604 15" Duplex.

You might want to have them reconed at GPA and find a pair of 511 horns
to put on top.

Thanks. They are indeed 614 cabinets but they have ther 515b 15" woofers in them. Strange.

What is GPA?

Is the altec cloth still availible? It has metal window screen type material in it.

I've used Dalbec Audio for refoaming in the past. They're about 1/4 mile from my house so I avoid shipping costs and potential shipping damage.

Do you think it's worth all the extra money and time having GPA recone them vs. Dalbec?

Also, is there a way to accurately date the 515B woofers?

These are not foam surround but accordion type with a special GU.
You can order a kit from GPA . THe cone must be light weight and have an under hung voice coil.

It will probably need to be re maged. Dalbec seems to manufacture their own brand so they must have a re mag machine. Enquire first. If not then send both speakers to GPA.

I have a nice pair of 805B's w/291-16A drivers that I could use with these 614 cabinets. I wonder if that would be overkill?

Very nice project, for sure!

I'd suggest you call rather than email to GPA. Call during normal business hours Central time and ask for Bill - he usually answers the phone and will discuss your situation. BTW, he will ship back in safe boxes - just get the frames to him safely.

I cannot recommend Bill's work highly enough. He rebuilt my Altec 604s and they're wonderful!

I don't have any idea . Best to call and ask Bill.

I have a picture of the Altec Iconic with a 612 or 614 cabinet.

The two drivers should be aligned as close as possible for proper phasing if not then an electronic cross over with time alignement will do the trick.

This is my first post here but have been a frequent lurker. Your 614 looks like an early version with a port that is significantly larger than this later Altec 614 plan, port = 7"W x 2"H that I use with early 414s. If you don't mind, could you please post the dimensions of the port in the above picture?

the ports are 3" tall and 13" wide. My woofer hole is almost 15" in diameter.. making it a 614A according to the link below.

Mine are a much different cabinet than the 614 plan you posted. Mine do not have a diagonal board inside like these 614's seem to show.

Front bracket for Altec sectoral horns.
Not sure why but I have around a dozen of these.

I don;t think those brackets were what came on these 614A cabinets. If you look at the outline of where the bracket was (on the speaker sides) you'll see they were very long.

I popped the altec 614A cabs on ebay today. I decided I have too many speakers already.

I'm picking up a pair of legacy audio "classics" this weekend :applaud: and next week a pair of infinity monitor II's. :applaud:

Sorry to bug do you still have these cabs? I am building a pair of these Altec 614 TV front cabs like this original set. I can not seem to find a detail plan of the cab? I can sort out most of it just need a few dimensions if thats ok?

1. width of the TV front frame. size from outside edge to inside edge that makes the TV?
2. size of radius of the inside corners of the TV from?
3. Port size opening on baffel?
4. does the front TV use 3/4" Plywood like the rest of the cabinet?
