I bought a house a few years ago and found 6 jbl pro series 2245h speakers that need reconing . I consulted a few locals and decided to gut the baskets and prep them for reconing . I taped the voice coil gap on each after using an air chuck to blow them out . The last one i completed was sitting on the table in my shop . My son went in to play his drums , needless to say i picked the basket off of the floor to find that my voice coil gap was closed in on one side . can i use a brass punch and rubber mallet to center my gap again or is this basket ruined for good . HELP !!!:banghead::(

Probably the top plate which is glued to the magnets surface shifted or the magnet and the top plate together shifted.

It cant be repaired effectively.

Sure it can....unless the magnet is cracked into pieces.

Most of the shifts I've seen are clean adhesive shears. They are as good as new when repaired/recentered.

Fraid I"m gonna have to disagree with you on this one.

Perhaps I should qualify my statement by adding that without degaussing, recentering, reglueing and regaussing it wont be as good as new.

Those are my policys.

I know we have both been down this road.Perhaps we can get together some day for a trade of skills and each learn some new tricks.

Hey Oldmics,

You're right about the process....but if you're brave you can skip the de-mag/re-mag with the right technique...and fingers clear:blink:.

I gave the simple Cliff's notes response....didn't want give away any trade secrets on the interweb;).

I'll trade skill with you anytime.....T-Birds in flight.

What about the other five 2240 drivers?

I have two dead 2240 cores that are currently being reconed into 2245s. Apparently, this is the most recommended approach, in part, because the 2240 kits are nearing $300 and the 2245 kits are still reasonably priced.

i am reconing 3 of the 6 . and will give the other 3 to the man with the kits for a big discount on the kits. im going with 2240s because they are more suited for band applications . :applaud:

Gun cleaner....400 grit wet/dry.

CLEAN THOROUGHLY....blow out with compressed air. Don't make the gap any bigger. It's .057"

thanks edge , it seems to me that you are the man when it comes to jbl refurbishing , i am a nurse by trade , and a weekend bluesman . wish i was a little more speaker savy . so sanding this with a 400 grit will work , i hope i can clean the rust out of the gap without messing up .
